Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Catch-All

Pages

The next Uncharted game has been revealed by Entertainment Weekly of all places.

Based on the limited details of the article it looks like more Uncharted, but with a desert theme this time instead of the jungle theme of the first and the snowy mountain theme of the second. It also looks like they are planning on dumping even more money and time into the multiplayer portion. I thought the addition of multiplayer in the last one was okay, but really hope the single player development doesn't suffer this time around as a result of what sounds like it will be an even larger emphasis on multiplayer.

Uncharted was the first game that made me glad I had picked up the PS3 in addition to the other consoles I already had and was my favorite game on the console for quite some time. Uncharted 2 surpassed it in almost every way and edged out Batman: Arkham Asylum as my game of the year last year. So I think it is safe to say that I have pretty high expectations for the next in the series.

Is anyone else excited?

For sure I'm excited, Uncharted 2 was amazing. Can't wait to see what they do with this.

I am excited. Very, very excited. It looks like 2011 is the year I choke to death on awesome. An embarrassment of riches.

I'll have to keep this on my radar. The first Uncharted was the sole reason I got a PS3. If they are pouring more money into the multiplayer aspect, could that mean there is campaign co-op?

Squeee.

I would be more excited if it weren't damned near a year away. Why do they do this to me?

Soooo excited. Uncharted 2 was also my GOTY for 2010. I actually thought that the multiplayer was surprisingly good, and I know they received a ton of positive feedback from it. It would be silly if they didn't try to expand and improve it.

I really don't think you need to worry about added emphasis on multiplayer affecting single player quality. A lot of effort was put into developing the multiplayer for Uncharted 2, and I doubt anyone would argue that the single player wasn't a vast improvement over Drake's Fortune.

I loved Uncharted 2 and all but I'm a little worried about this. I've heard it's going to focus on Drake's family a lot more, kind of like the movie (which I've heard has almost nothing to do with Uncharted). I hope they don't rush this one as a tie-in.

Personally, I'm glad. It means I have more time to convince the fiancée that a PS3 is really necessary. I played the first two on my house-mate's PS3, but circumstances have changed, necessitating a new purchase. Since she's rather disdainful of gaming (despite playing WoW, go figure) that will be quite tough, and I'll need all the time I can get.

All I've heard is that there'll be more Sully, which is a good thing, because Sully's goddamn awesome. The change they should not have made from the beta was removing Sully's cigar smoke.

*swoons*

I am very excited for this but please please please don't include...

Spoiler:

Any stupid, difficult supernatural bits that don't make any damn sense in the context of the story.

Other than that, bring it on!

Is this the one where they introduce Drake's family of international treasure police?

EDIT to say that I kid, and loved what little I played of the first game and still ache to play the second. Alas, no PS3. So I lash out and attack those of whom I am extremely jealous (ie, PS3 owners). Jerks!

Now bring on the DeNiro/Pesci/Wahlberg trifecta!

It looks like it's in a desert so you know they have to include mummies.

Helpful.

Talk about putting the tease in teaser.

I love how they really roll with the Indiana Jones-esque level of technology in these games. Drake could totally bust out a GPS, a laptop, or any other seemingly useful tech, but they have him stick to compasses, dusty books, half-eaten pencils and hand-drawn grail diaries. So charming.

(Er. I guess it did mention a lady's Skype address in the second game, but still. Still!)

I just went from 6 to Midnight.

I'll get excited when we're not so far away from release.

Some more plot details and screenshots

I can't believe that Uncharted 2 was this year, feels so long ago. Maybe I should stick it back in the playstation...

I think it was last year...

Yeah, it was a fall release last year.

WTF, looks NOTHING like Mark Wahlberg:

Just a heads up. Those aren't screenshots, they are game art.

I hope that this focuses more on adventuring and less on the shooting elements which I felt were UC2 weak points. Maybe some more co-op stuff as well.

I was okay with the shooting and the traversal, but didn't like the early forced stealth museum level. I realize it was forced as a tutorial, and the improved stealth elements did come in handy on some of the later regular levels, but I still found it to be the least enjoyable part of the game. EDIT: (the forced stealth level not stealth in the game in general)

Unlike others farther up thread, I also didn't mind the "twist" in either game as it gave them a way to add in some diversity to break the monotony of fighting the same 3-5 soldiers the whole game.

Spoiler:

I actually thought the fast scurrying mutated Nazis worked fine in the story of the first game. The blue yeti guardian dudes felt more shoehorned into in the second game's narrative, but I appreciated the change up they added to the combat (almost completely bullet impervious goons that could still be taken out relatively easily with a couple well placed shots with the slow crossbow). I would be very surprised if the Lost City you are searching for in this game doesn't have some sort of supernatural enemy type to spice up the late game combat. I personally would love some sort of "sand phantom" which bullets would pass right through and that you can only defeat by dispersing with either explosives or something entirely new like the crossbow from Uncharted 2.

Lo!

11/1/11. I'm not going to lie, the temptation to pull a Cartman is strong.

Drake looks a little different to me. I wonder if they're trying to shift their old character model to look a little more like Marky Mark? It would be too jarring to make a huge change, but maybe some tweaking will make a movie tie-in more passable for people who haven't played the first two games.

I could have sworn some of those desert shots were pre-rendered, but apparently Naughty Dog confirmed that the entire thing was done in engine. It looks like they've somehow managed to top the visuals of the 2nd.

That was definitely my favorite VGA reveal trailer of the night.

Just finished the first game tonight. Yeah yeah, way behind, but I just got my PS3 like 5-6 weeks back.

Guess I've got 11 months to get and finish the 2nd huh?
