iPhone Games Catch-All

Anyone up for a few rounds of Words with Friends?

I'm in for it too. Username is 4dSwissCheese.

Picked up Tilt to Live Lite to try it out. I enjoyed it enough that I'm going to be picking up the full version. Well polished and a simple concept, even if you don't like it, it's worth having the lite version to use as a tech demo for the tilt feature to show friends.

minisquadron is free right now. have no idea if it's any good (haven't tried it yet), but that review seems positive.

Tagging for future reference

MiniSquadron is free right now. It's a 2D, arcade-style distillation of Red Baron, and it's excellent.

Edit: A skimmer is me.

Arachnadoodle. Sorry I didn't mention it yesterday when it was free, but it's totally worth the .99c Obviously taking it's cue from Peggle, it has what may be the best usage of classical music in a game (sorry, Peggle).

Tycho was pimping Steambirds for iphone/android today. Picked it up for 59p and from the 15 minutes I've spent with it it looks like a keeper. Turnbased dogfighting game that reminds me of playing Ace of Aces as a kid.

Rayman 2: The Great Escape is free today. No idea if it's any good, but the price is right for a download.

Grabbing both, thanks guys!

Massive, massive butt-load of huge iOS releases today. Ridiculously large.

That sounds interesting... Pandas, really?

I welcome the entertainment industry shifting all of their energy away from Zombies and towards Pandas.

Yes. I picked it up as well, it's pretty sweet. Makes me think of the standing game of Mustangs and Messerschmitts they used to play at the local RPG store when I was in highschool. Without all the work.

Red Conquest is a decent RTS that is currently free.

Anyone bit the bullet on Infinity Blade or Eternal Legacy and have impressions?

Infinity Blade isn't out til tomorrow, but EL is out "early" the link says. Which is weird, do iOS games come out on certain days?

I'm interested in both but I feel like I should wait for sales.

They'll actually be out at 11pm Eastern tonight (but you're right that EL is already out).

As for why this is occurring, I can only quote the Touch Arcade post:

With one Thursday to go before the iTunes Connect holiday lock out, tonight we're going to see the first of the avalanche of pre-Christmas releases. This Wednesday works the same as every other Wednesday on the App Store, but if you're not familiar, here's the gist- Entirely too many developers have banded together in some kind of secret Dr. Strangelove war room and have determined that releasing games on a Thursday is the best time to do it. When you set the release date in iTunes Connect to Thursday, games launch in international markets as the Earth spins and it slowly becomes Thursday in those areas. New Zealand is first, and us lucky Americans are last. All of these games will be available at 11:00 PM EST tonight, or earlier if you're in a region east of us.

I don't get the point of releasing everything on the same day, personally. Some kind of collusion? Trying to emulate the console experience of a release day? No idea.

Infinity Blade is out now. There's only one version, for the pad and phone. They've decided to charge phone customers the pad price (A$7.99).

So sorry if this is a skim but is there a site that tracks the various sales on iPhone games? So many of them are one day only and on specific days I can't keep track just with this thread.

There's appshopper, but you still have to filter through a lot of chaff.

To expand on that, appshopper has its own app that can push you notifications on games on your own/wish list. Furthermore, you can quickly browse sales: set your app genre to Games, type to Paid and Free and the last filter column to Price Changes. Voila! you have a list of games that have changed the price recently. If you want to filter further, just list the Popular apps and not All.

Picked up Infinity Blade and it's very visually impressive and a ton of fun. It's essentially Punch Out in a medieval setting with RPG elements. Gameplay consists of reading your opponent and either dodging, parrying or blocking then unleashing the hurt when successful. There are also magic attacks and super moves as well. Again, all very Punch Out-esque. The carrot on a stick factor comes in with your gear and item drops. Not only does your character level up but you level up items which give you bonuses when maxed out. You can upgrade your sword, shield, helmet, armor and ring. Unlike Epic Citadel though there is no free roam as it's very much a directed experience so don't expect that.

What impresses me about this game is how much they embraced the iPhone. All the control are made for touch screen use (no lame console controls tacked on) and it can be played in quick bursts on the go. It's very much an iPhone tailored experience. I don't think I have to harp on the graphics as that's the obvious stand out but gameplay wise it's a lot of fun, it's satisfying and very addictive. Chair did a great job on this game. Now give me Shadow Complex 2 Chair!!!

Edit: I was playing on the iPhone 3GS and didn't find any major hitches that ruined the experience. Should be better on the iPhone 4/iPad though.

Agreed on pretty much every point. I was kind of expecting this to be like Rage: beautiful but shallow and cumbersome. Thankfully, the opposite is true. This game was very clearly designed to make the best use of touch controls possible. It's incredibly responsive, and there is much more depth than I was expecting. Even the way you cast magic (drawing the corresponding symbol) is extremely satisfying.

This game makes me question my plans to get a 3DS. I have a feeling this could be a catalyst to convince other big name developers to jump on board the iPhone bandwagon and really throw some money and talent at development.

And man oh man is this game pretty.

Infinity Blade looks and plays amazing. If we can expect to see even more of this quality going forward, it will be very happy times indeed.

I bought Infinity Blade too, it's really good!

Wanna say "For an ipad game", but it's good in general, I hope more "serious" developers go on the ipad...

Should iPhone 4 users buy the HD version of Infinity Blade, or is that just for the iPad? My brother just picked up an iPhone 4 and wanted to know. I'm just a clueless 3G clown.

Man, I tried to install Infinity Blade, Rage and Puzzle Quest 2 on my phone this morning...but not enough space. DAMN these games are getting big!

I will have to delete things off my iPad to get these things installed. 16GB seemed so big at the time!

There are some flaws in the battle strategy of the Angry Birds...

There is only one version of Infinity Blade. It's a universal app so it probably "detects" what device it's being run on and adjusts settings accordingly.

I just want to throw another recommendation in for the turn based aerial dog fighting of Steambirds. That game is fantastic; I have not put it down all morning.
