Current favourite word?

Swanky. It's not a big, fancy word, but I just love the way it rolls off the tongue.

Thanks for the vocabulary test, Katy. I scored 39,700.

Anyone have regional words they like that aren't in common use outside their area. Up north we use the word 'ginnel' for a narrow passageway between two buildings.

Minnesotans love to say, "spendy" when referring to an expensive item. This one always tickles me.

Skookum

A strange one in Wisconsin is "Bubbler" as a term for a drinking/water fountain.

Here in Michigan we go to the "Party Store" for our alcohol, the rest of the US goes to the Liquor Store. And you buy balloons, wrapping paper, hats, at the party store.

Canadians use the term "Peeler" in reference to a strip club. As in "Let's go drink some Molsons and hit the peelers, eh."

That one's for Milwaukee and Boston, for some reason.

I'm reading a lot of sci-fi books right now so my current favourite would have to be "Perihelion".

Speaking of Sci Fi, would Adult Beef Swellings be considered a word?

Really? I've never heard that one. I don't go to a lot of strip clubs though.

What sci fi books are you reading that reference the point in an an object's orbit around the sun at which it is closest to the sun?

"Periastron" is so much sexier than "perihelion".

37,400... not bad at all.

Vasodilation sounds good to me.

Big fan of Widdershins, it tends to confuse people.
Also, you would never have guessed it but I'm quite fond of Quixotic

Crapulous. It has a great match of meaning and construction

Spoiler:

It means feeling hungover

(and ~40k words)

Today's word: "teleology". With special guest appearances by the prefixes "cis-" and "trans-".

That's what we called them in Sydney (Aus) when I was growing up.

e2a: Apparently it's a brand-name of a Wisconsin water fountain manufacturer. Wiki has this to say:

The term is still used in several regional dialects of the United States, originating in eastern Wisconsin and remaining well-known throughout the state. The term is widely used in NSW Australia.

Quite Interesting.

My favorite regional word is "yinz". Used in Pittsburgh to replace y'all, people with strong Pittsburgh speech patterns are referred to as Yinzers.

Agreed. As Monty Python teaches us Probably NSFW. Otherwise I would have embedded it here.

Tidalis, thanks to Tom Chick on the Jumping the Shark podcast.

Also, Bleargh, thanks to Liz Lemon in 30 Rock.

I always like hearing other people say the word "tap".

Forget Monty Python. When it come to the use of the word f*ck no one compares to McNulty and the Bunk:

That was pretty awesome. Why have I not seen this show?

Really? I've never heard that one. I don't go to a lot of strip clubs though.

I hear the term "peeler" more in eastern Canada - Ontario and onwards.

Here in Vancouver I've only ever heard it referred to as "strip club".

Yeah, I'm not a fan of "dumbed-down" words.

Perseverance > Stick-to-it-iveness. Retrospect > Hind-sight.

I like to exchange expletives every few years; current highlights include "smashing!" and "bodacious!"

Also, "theosis" is a perennial favorite.

You REALLY should watch the Wire. It is one of, if not the greatest show ever. Also, someone mentioned in the comments on that clip that the scene was done as a reaction to all of the CSI type shows where they use fancy tech and gadgets to figure out what happened.

Skookum

I wasn't sure about Skookum as a word (It's got that 'I just made up a word' look to it) but I was turned around when I said it out loud. If I ever see a sasquatch I'll use it for sure.

On a separate note:

Reconnoitre

Recon = Pop your head up over a fallen tree trunk count the enemy and then ducking back down again.

Reconnisance = Fly over the enemy in a biplane taking photos.

Recky = An Englishman doing some recon.

Reconnoitre = Whistle casually as you saunter past the enemy disguised as a peasant woman.
