Current favourite word?

Pages

I didn't see a thread covering this. so I thought I'd start one. What's your favourite word of the moment?

It can be a favourite for any reason, be it simple, hardy usability, its texture as it rolls off the tongue, or simple, pretentious complexity.

I'd currently go with 'licentious', I like the way it sounds as I spit it at those I deplore.

You?

Stargate.

Just finished catching up with SGU and I love the incredible connotation of the word.

The things we sf geeks take for granted...

I have learned new words (spoilers for the board game Cutthroat Caverns):

Spoiler:

Are you a Were-Boar?

Dang, sounds like I'm missing out on some rad proper nouns!

I've never actually watched Stargate, is it any good?

I tend to like obscure words that sane people wouldn't normally use. I don't use them either, or try to drop them into a conversation, because that would be twattish, but I like to know them.

Taghairm. Divination by lying in the hide of a bullock under a waterfall
Properispomenon. A greek word having a circumflex accent on the second to last syllable.

World Wide Word is a good place for this kind of thing.

My overall favorite word has been, for years, "diaphanous".

I have always been fond of persnickety.

1a : fussy about small details : fastidious b : having the characteristics of a snob

2: requiring great precision

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a

n., pl., humuhumunukunukuapua'a, or hu·mu·hu·mu·nu·ku·nu·ku·a·pu·a'as.
Either of two triggerfishes, Rhinecanthus aculeatus or R. rectangulus, native to the outer reefs of Hawaii, the latter having a broad black band on the side and a black triangle at the beginning of the tail.

We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon.

Clixby (KLIKS-bee) adj.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.

Defenestration.....nuff said.

That used to be mine for a long time too, but these days I think Callipygian would have to be my favourite.

I never use it, but I like the way kerfuffle sounds.

Increate.

To exist without having been created.

Indubitably.

To evident to be doubted. And fun to say.

not sure what i means yet....looking for a definition.

Clover suggested : It sounds Australian. I think it should refer to people talking nonsense in an Australian accent. (garble)

Lugubrious. Adjective - mournful, dismal, or gloomy, esp. in an affected, exaggerated, or unrelieved manner.

I like it because it's such a fun word to say and carries an implication that seriously, this is just getting ridiculous, stop sulking, you're embarrassing your family.

Your mom vastly improves my enjoyment of that word, too.

;)

I'm assuming it's a reference to this?

I've seen that word (and pic) used in internet political discourse, usually as an accusation that one's opponent is doing a lot of angry shouting with no actual meaning or context.

I like a bit of chutzpah.

Ouch. Lobster made a comment on my mom? Now I know the Universe is operating backwards today!

This. Has been since high school.

I love Defenestrate, Guillotine, and Masticate.

In fact, I'm masticating right now...

Boustrophedonic, with crepuscular a close second, because boustrophedonic is hard to work into a conversation. Harder than crepuscular, at least.

I love the word famished. Just something about that sounds great, even though it's actually rarther horrible. Hearing someone say "I'm absolutely famished" in a British accent is awesome.

I also love f*ck just because there is no other word in existence with as many possible uses as that word.

I have been using Schmutz a fair bit lately.

It's a tie between Hoodlums and Pants.

Properispomenon. A greek word having a circumflex accent on the second to last syllable.

If only it would describe itself -- but alas, its accent is an acute on the antepenultimate. Come to think of it, "antepenultimate" is quite a word in its own right.

It's one of my favorites, but loses out to "petrichor."

Undulating

hoary

Exterminate (but only if it's said in Dalek voice)

It's even better when combined with maximum.

This is fun: http://testyourvocab.com/ I feel that I need to look up the words on page 2 that I didn't know.

(I came out with an approximate 34,000 word vocabulary, based on the test.)

Oh, and a word I like is mellifluous. Also graupel.
