Tech Deals Catch-All

The Video Games deals thread is always an interesting source of bargains, so how about a Tech Deals catch-all? If one is in existence just *cough* away and we'll move on from there.

A mild one to start with; Seagate external 320 MB USB drive for $58 at a local Wal*Mart; not a bad deal for a retail outlet. Most online sources I've found are selling it for around $70. I picked up one of these a few weeks ago and have been quite pleased. Quiet, single-cable, light, attractive, and reasonably fast. Thumbs up!

That's awesome. I would only need 750 of these to back up my Steam folder! That's cheap at only $43,500!
(I'm pretty sure you meant 320 GB, not MB!)

EDIT: Not to belittle the idea. I fully support the concept of a Tech Deals thread and plan to contribute.

Damn! GB I did mean, indeed. Though that does remind me of my first hard drive, a 340MB model from Computer Sales Professionals (Later absorbed by Quantex, I.... think?)

Muhahahahahaahhahaha!

Here's a good website for daily deals:

Great idea for a thread! Tagged for future reference/contributions

Bumping this thread for sharp-eyed GWJers to share the love of awesome deals this shopping season!

Amazon has the Flip MinoHD for $109 today. I was thinking about getting the UltraHD on BF at Wal-mart for $99, but this is a better model and with no tax or shipping, only $2 more.

Just so everyone knows, these are the OLD models that are being sold off.

When buying Flips at full price, make absolutely certain you are getting the 2010 refreshed models ("3rd generation").

These models use new video hardware that includes hardware-based image stabilization and 720p @ 60 fps. My wife wanted a Flip for a long time, and I held out until this refresh finally brought image stabilization to the video hardware. (Competitors like the Kodak Zi8 have had image stabilization, but lacked the superb friendly usability of the Flips).

There are still old models on the shelves, so unless you're taking advantage of a big sale price, make sure you're not buying one of those if you buy from a brick-and-mortar store.

Also, I disagree that the MinoHD is "a better model" than the UltraHD. It's smaller, but the Ultras are sturdier, have better battery life , and the physical buttons are much nicer for usability IMO. The 3rd-gen UltraHD even lets you swap plain AAA batteries in place of the rechargeable battery pack, which can be awfully handy.

(edits made as I realized Amazon's sale was for 2nd gen models)

Thanks, sunshine...

Eh, it meets my needs of a small camera and I don't have to deal with mini-DV tapes.

$100 is a good price for the old ones. Just want people to know what they're buying, because Cisco doesn't do a damn thing to help you differentiate the new from the old.

Amazon is price matching TVs for 14 or 30 days after you buy it (can't remember) so now's a good time to get one and not have to wait in line on Friday. FYI - they only match online prices, and it has to be in-stock. Still, it already saved me $371.

Amazon has the Western Digital Elements 2TB USB drive for $89 right now. Technically this is as big a drive as Windows XP can address, but I've only used this model with Windows 7 and Linux myself.

Best laptop mouse ever - Logitech Wireless Anywhere for $40 shipped.

I bought it for a $60 4 months ago. This thing works flawlessly on glass tables and granite counter tops. Since the USB dongle is so short you can leave it plugged in too.

Wow, that's my favorite mouse. I managed to get it paid for at work at the full price. That's a very good deal.

Yeah, my girlfriend just picked one up for her new Alienware today. I'm hoping they make a desktop version that matches the battery life.

Kingston's V+ 128gb now has a buy.com rebate, making it $169.95:

Does this count? Verizon stores selling original iPads on the cheap! The 16GB WiFi model is $299.

Yea it does. Holy hot damn.

Yeah, I bought 2 of the 16 GB versions, although I'm selling at least one.

Is this thread really only one page long and last post in March 2011?
Wow.

Well to revive this thread I give you this to my Canadian friends.

Amazing deal on 64 GB Sandisk Micro SDHC Class 10 card.

Probably because there's so many deals for this stuff, and quite a few websites that cover these things. But, if anyone sees a 500GB+ HDD for cheap, I'd like to know as my OS/Game install drive just went on my gaming PC and I don't have the $$ for a SSD.

Wow, a buck a gig for flash memory. I remember being amazed, looking at my first SD card, thinking that in its mighty 256 megs, it could carry almost as much as 200 floppy disks, but it was the size of a postage stamp.

Now they're up to about 45 thousand floppies, and it's the size of a fingernail.

I remember paying $50 for the IBM-branded version of this. And I still have it.

Holds a colossal 8MB.

The Library of Congress' entire print library is estimated at being about 10TB, uncompressed -- and since text usually compresses at about 10:1, we'll probably be able to store every printed volume in the entire Library of Congress, in a fingernail-sized device, within about six years... and uncompressed within twelve.

The world just quietly went and changed into science fiction on me, when I wasn't looking.

While I wholeheartedly agree, are we taking the internet for granted now?

Costco has Dell 27" 1440P LCD's for $650 with free shipping.. but probably tax since Costco is everywhere.

Hey can I get some advice on a new PC? I'm looking at this one for gaming, any thoughts would be appreciated!

Is this the right forum for this, or is there a better one?
(Edited one word)

That's a fairly dismal computer. We're more oriented around building them ourselves... our typical build is usually between $900 and $1200, depending on your budget and what extras you want, but it would stomp all over that thing, at least for games.

If all you're doing is office work, that would be okay, I suppose, but it seems overpriced for the relatively weak components it's offering.

The stickied Build Your Own PC thread has some suggestions. (You just need to read the last five pages or so, not every post since the dawn of time. )

Thanks, I have been out of the marketplace for a while, I generally relied on my brother for upgrades to my PC. I've decided I need to start over as the old PC has had everything replaced several times and I feel like I need a completely fresh start; on the other hand, maybe I just need to get a new MB, some ram, a CPU and a new GPU. I can likely save myself some money thay way, and I have no issues swapping in the new parts myself.. but then I won't get new keyboard and mouse and disc drives.
