I ALMOST DIED

I see div tags all over the page's hypertext markup, where tables with embedded styling are supposed to be. This isn't 1998 enough!

My question is: Why 1998? Of all the years, why choose that one? Is that the year Certis lost his virginity? Elysium finally achieved a full lumberjack beard?

Perhaps because it's one of the best single years in gaming, particularly PC gaming, where this site's heart and soul really lay?

I mean, really, 1998 was a fantastic year: Half-Life, Rainbow Six, Sanitarium, Baldur's Gate, Fallout 2, Grim Fandango, StarCraft, Tribes, Thief: The Dark Project, Myth II, and Unreal all came out. On the console side, you had The Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, and Xenogears, among others. There's a lot to love there, and there's a lot to generate content about, even twelve years later. This is the time of year when publications start pumping out end of the year retrospectives, so why not write some articles for such a banner year?

I'm looking forward to Cory's article about how Heretic II was his personal game of the year.

I really hope that someone is going to fix this.

It's part of 1998 week at GWJ. The site looks this way on purpose.

I'm just going to assume that it's because 1998 was the year that jungle peaked as a musical genre. I will be celebrating by rinsing out some ragga this morning.

1998 was an awesome year for movies too: it was the year of The Dude, Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line, American History X, The Truman Show, Lock/Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Festen, Lola Rennt, Blade, ...

I thought we were past this dark time of anti-console sentiment.

You cut me, GWJ. You cut me deep.

If you're on Firefox or Chrome, there's already a fix.

(It'd be nice if we could get this on every new page of this thread until the week of fun draws to a close).

Does this mean we'll get a podcast from '98, too?

If only there was some way to communicate goings-on with the site that wasn't pseudo-random twittering... Maybe a "Main Page" of sorts, where people could "post" newsworthy items...

Hey! I was done with puberty by then ... barely.

We like to keep our readers on their toes. You guys were getting soft.

Good point, in 1998 I'm pretty sure I was never soft.

I feel like I should be back in elementary school. I wasn't even using the internet in 1998!

You might wake up one night and notice that the pillow of heterosexuality is missing....

Or has been replaced by this.

Again with making us feel like dirty old men?

I just assumed that this would be sorted out by the next day... then I find out its 1998 day? right now I am ashamed to be Canadian :(. But if this heralds an overhaul of massive proportions I will forgive all (unless it sucks).

If you're going to go with 1998, put a little effort in.

Don't do that to me, Dimmerswitch.

I enjoy visiting the site on my phone now. :p

What the hell's a Serif? Sheriff?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serif

In typography, serifs are semi-structural details on the ends of some of the strokes that make up letters and symbols. A typeface that has serifs is called a serif typeface (or seriffed typeface). A typeface without serifs is called sans-serif, from the French sans, meaning “without”. Some typography sources refer to sans-serif typefaces as "grotesque" (in German "grotesk") or "Gothic", and serif types as "Roman".

Encarta.

I just looked up the history of Encarta on Wikipedia. Then I wondered if we had an Encarta CD somewhere in the house. (Answer: probably. I know there's an OS/2 Warp CD somewhere. Why not Encarta?)

Bad timing, hit with an attack of vertigo for the first time in months, and now this. The 'style' is physically painful. Even with Stylish installed and overriding it. See ya next week when it doesn't hurt (literally hurt) to view the site.
