You know, if you don't feel like stealing it. I paid $2 for the episode.

Agreed. Remember the CoC guys. Posting less than legal ways to get stuff in threads is a no, no.

I refuse to pirate/steal any sort of media these days. Good to know it's on iTunes.

Purchased.

Edit: Time to reform my ways; itunes it is.

You can watch the first episode on AMC's website now.

I'm thinking about buying this to tackle the comic books.

http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288896838&sr=8-1

Is this a good way to jump into the comics or should I be buying the books by volume?

I personally prefer the hardcover collections, but the compendium is a good place to start (and much cheaper than buying them individually). It also ends at a very good point in the story, and in a very dramatic manner that completely changes the tone of the series from then on.

I have the hardcovers too. They're pretty nice, with some extra concept art in color at the back.

Only real problem is waiting for them to put out enough issues to get the next hardcover together.

I am going to second the HC recommendations. They are really high quality books. Go to a comic book shop and compare the different versions, the hardcovers are just nicer books.
(Try and buy at least one from a LCS and then get the rest on Amazon if you have to, support your local stores!)

Watched the first episode. I think I'm going to stick to the comics.

Mind officially blown.

I love the graphic novel. Is there any plans for AMC to post the show online? I sorta don't have cable.

Edit: Took out link, but it's out there. Good to know it's on itunes as well.

I'm intrigued. What didn't you like about it?

I'm just stunned that not everyone likes the same thing as me. What next? You're going to tell me we don't share the same political ideology or religious views? What kind of crazy, mixed up world has this become?!!?

On a serious note, know what would have made the show better? If it was in black and white.

No. Just no.

I don't think black and white is good in the comic, either. But even more, I think the cinematography is outstanding, and I would not change a thing.

Lars wrote:

It's particularly related to level of abstraction I get from the comics. So much of the story, characterization, and action exists in my head as it's directed by the pages. The print cuts away a lot of the fat that slow moments tend to have because I can always read it faster.

Stylistically, the show feels too clean. The art style of the comics reminds you the world is now a cold (un)dead place, and it probably smells horrible with all the undead around. I don't get a hint of that grossness. The zombies don't feel like they're rotting either like the comics portray.

The production values, while AMC seems to be throwing a ton of money into the show, still feel like TV to me. There were definitely "wow" moments like the car roll, and the corner turn in town, but with any extended series that tries to do some sort of fictional reality (fantasy, sci-fi, zombie apocalypse, etc.) there's going to be a lot of patchwork. When I see those seams I get pulled out of the fiction because I happen to be obsessively compulsive about how they shot that. It's more of my problem. It follows me wherever I go.

At the end of the day I have no reason to watch the series because I'm so invested into the comic. It's how I'd prefer to absorb the content.

I'm not talking about simple black and white film, but something stylish, like Sin City. Although...they've already said there's a ton of CGI in the series as it is. It's probably pretty expensive to produce. I don't want to see it get canned like HBO did Carnival, just because of how much it costs to make an episode. A more comic-y style might turn off a lot of regular viewers as well. On further reflection, I withdraw my statement.

I can see what you are saying, but I think even a stylish look like Sin City would would reduce what is making the show work so well. It does feel like a real world. Our real world. I don't think this story needs an extra layer of hipness. If it were to go black and white, a Night of the Living Dead style would be more appropriate.

While I think the comic would benefit from getting inked, the black and white does work on the level that SuperDave alludes to. It is a cold, stark world, and the comic relates that well. But I would disagree that the show has a TV feel. It is very cinematic, and looks far better than what you actually find on TV. I can totally see enjoying the comic book experience over television, because it is different.

What the comic doesn't do well, as I head into the fifth collection of the TPB, is dialogue. It's pretty awful. The story is fine, but the the conversations can really ring hollow. For this, the TV show beats the comic book by a long shot. I really appreciate that they got a legitimate film director to take the helm of the series.

For me, I'm enjoying the comic and the TV show. I like the contrast, and I feel like it enhances the overall theme of the stories. I'm keeping ahead of the story on TV, and will probably be way ahead in no time. It's a pretty fun way to take in this world created by Kirkman.

When I said earlier that the comic was not required reading, it was only to state that the TV show stands on its own. In the same way, the comic does, as well.

I checked some of them out of my library a year ago.

Good job on using your library! Now I just wish my library/ies would have them in their collection.

Inter-library transfer maybe?

If you are a fan of the comic you should still support the series on tv. I am sure it will bring new readers.

I wonder if the comics being black and white was originally more of a decision based on the cost of printing color versus black and white.

While I hear what you are saying, I think that after this first episode the comic and the show are going to diverge more and more. Different people are going to die and relationships are going to play out differently so I think it will be easier to look at them as separate and appreciate them differently.

I don't think that is a good enough reason to watch something if you don't actually like it.

I think it was a stylistic choice. The artist of the first 6 books is listed as a creator so they probably could have gotten a colorist if they had wanted one.

After posting that I did some googling to see if I could find an interview I had read where i thought the reasoning for the black and white had been explained. I didn't find it, but I did find a lot of fanboi posts and interviews with Darabont and Kirkman discussing people wanting the show in b&w.

I double-plus withdraw my request now.

Premier is on Hulu now.

I did pirate the premiere because I was too impatient to wait to get my first real taste of the series, but with the full intention of later snagging it on Zune or something. I snagged it on Zune via X-Box Live the first chance I got, and that's going to remain my method for continuing the series.

Of course, now AMC is putting out there for free on their web site and Hulu. It's pretty smart marketing on their part to capitalize on all of the positive buzz and try to snag more viewers that will hopefully stick with the show. I probably still would have paid to see it sooner.

I bought the first episode a few days ago but haven't had a chance to watch it. Of course they're now giving it away for free.

My wife decided to finally watch the first episode with me. She also named the horse. Mittens. She was not thrilled about what happened.

Lol. You should suggest to your wife that with a show set during a zombie apocalypse, she not get in the habit of naming anything.
