I can't count the reasons I should stay, One by one they all just fade away. Community S6! #andamovie

Neither Pierce nor Shirley were especially well served in the first season, it's nice to see them making up for it, and doing so strongly. "If you think that was dope, check out these beatitudes." Remarkable.

This especially. I get worried when some shows try to show off "the other characters" by highlighting them in the main story, as it usually falls flat. But Scrubs and now Community have shown that it can be done well.

Andrew Sullivan posts a poem on his blog each Sunday. By pure coincidence, today's poem, from 1902, contains the stanze:

After the Sun the shade,
and beatitude of shadow;
Dim aisles for memory made,
And thought.
After the Sun the shade.

It's not intended to be a funny poem, but I just cannot stop laughing at seeing the word 'beatitude' again, in this completely incongruous context.

Do you hear it in the pained, disgusted way Troy says it? I do.

Sweet Mother of Abed, it gave, and gave, and just wouldn't quit!

"I know it's a long shot, but did anyone think to turn off the Dean's playlist?"
"You're not special, I'm special, I got bit ten minutes aGRRRRRRRRRRGH..."
"That's my jacket! You're stretching it!"
"Make me proud, Troy. Be the first black man to make it to the end."

I could go on.

"I love you."
"I know."

AND the ABBA music! Just hearing it made me laugh.

This was the first episode of Community my roommate ever watched. I didn't even try to explain it to him.

Nobodies special!

The basement scene had my eyes watering...

"What is with this cat?"
"Is someone throwing it?"

Also.. I wish my name was Kevin.

That bit had me in stitches.

Rather than his usual criticism, the Great Sepinwall this week has some insights into how the episode came to be. Apparently at one point the cat took over the entire last act.

Wow, that was fun to read. I've also wasted the last hour reading other interviews.

Was anyone else distracted by how ripped Troy is? Anyone?

No, but I was distracted by how much his Dracula costume looked like a Pharaoh costume.

I know! Stupid Kevins.

You mean his toilet seat cover?

NO. NOT AT ALL. WHAT ARE YOU INSINUATING?

I loved this almost as much as the paintball episode.

Well it still looked more like a Pharaoh costume than a Dracula one.

Proof that we missed out on an awesome Spider-Man.

Wonderful episode with so many good lines. The use of Abba was damned inspired.

sh*t, I don't know about you guys but I might just change my name to Kevin.

Epic Community. 2nd only to Modern Warfare.

If your friends aren't watching this show, they shouldn't be your friends anymore. I'm going to start loaning out my season 1 DVDs until everyone I know is hooked. This show is too good to die.

I am really just considering having that as my voice message, even though I am not a Kevin.

Good read. Comments are interesting though. Apparently some people didn't like the episode?

I'm very confused by some of those comments. I'm not sure we were watching the same show last year, when they lament for some 1st season quality.

"Why did he call me?"
"I hate you less! That's how much I hate you normally!"
"Even as a zombie you're cool."

I like that they made someone else the center of things. Its a nice deviation.

*edit* Honestly, that must have been the easiest paycheck Chevy Chase has ever picked up. Their impressions of him were great, though.

Comment sections there and at AV Club aren't like the Enlightenment-era parlor maintained here, they're more like that scene in Silence of the Lambs where Clarice first meets Lecter--cells from which insane shouting emanates, and then someone flings jizz at your face.

Loved it!

Loved the cat!

"We've got to deal with this cat!"

"Is someone throwing it?"

F*ck those sh*tballs. They should be doused with gasoline and set on f*cking fire.

Watched this again tonight and it was even better.

Didn't catch the new credits the first time. Chevy got his boobs back!

Oh, also it should be stated that Annie looked so hot in her Little Red Riding Hood costume.

"I don't know why I thought this would work."

"OKAY! OKAY! I'm bit! Congratulations. You did what zombies do."

"You're not racist."

The bulk of the criticisms seem to be that the show is veering way too heavily into pop cultural reference gimmick episodes, which, while still funny, are a departure from the standard season one "we're in a study group, going to community college and dealing with our personal issues" type of thing.

It's a completely valid criticism. I sort of feel the same way to a degree, but COMMUNITY has always been a bit of a cartoon, so I am happy to roll with things for now.
