Fallout: New Vegas - Fall 2010

Okay, apparently I don't understand Caravan at all. I get most of the rules. I've got three piles, I want to make them add up to between 21 and 26, and higher than my opponent's. Each pile has to be the same suit and has to either descend or ascend. But I can only put cards in the first pile? My opponent seems to be able to place cards in whatever pile he wants, but my only option is to press W and it goes into the first pile. If it can't go in that pile I have to discard it. Is this part of the game I'm not understanding, or yet another bug?

EDIT: Also, I should be able to place a card other than the top card in my hand? Otherwise there wouldn't be a point to all the other cards in my hand, since the top card is replaced by a new one drawn from the deck each turn. I'm really leaning towards bug.

Funniest moment so far:

Spoiler:

Encountered Harland in the Repconn Basement. When I told him I had found his friend, then opened the door to the right, he came storming through it, ran through two bear traps and died.

I don't remember what was in his inventory but that was quite comical.

EXACTLY the same thing happened to me last night. I have to assume it was deliberate and not a bug

Spoiler:

Got a nice hunting rifle off of him, so it was a win-win

Also...

Spoiler:

The ending to that overall questline is mad as a sack full of badgers...I wonder if I'm going to head further east and find all three rockets embedded in the side of a cliff somewhere

Oh, and in case you missed it - check out the gun for sale with the dude in the shop in Novac (the one with the 1337 price tag).

Spoiler:

You can easily nick it from the supply closet without handing over that kind of money

Is this "That Gun?"

I actually prefer "Lucky" for my badassery six shootering.

I would appreciate some pointers on this one as well. It's for these exact reasons that I am not playing Caravan at all, because I simply keep losing too many caps.

Ordered a collectors edition!

Being ambushed, whilst not really fun in reality, is a wicked rippin' good time in this game. Dudes on the ridgelines firing down, guys up close with tire irons etc...and they all waited until I was too far from cover. If that's scripting, it's good.

Screw it; enabled.

I have run into an inventory bug on the 360, post-patch. Sometimes, in your inventory, items do not show up when trading with a merchant. You still have the item and can use it, but you can't sell it.

There are several other little bugs I have seen, nothing game breaking, but certainly annoying. The quality of this game is embarrassing. I feel like I am playing a 20 dollar indie game.

When you're selecting cards, you can use the arrow keys to change the cards, as well as choose the place in the caravan stack to set the card. Sometimes it seems a little finicky on where you can place a card; moving up and down in the card stack will usually cause a card to turn from red to green, allowing you to place it.

It might not be a bug, in Oblivion merchants won't buy stolen goods. I think I'm remembering that right, and I'm not 100% sure if it applies to Fallout.

It never happened in Fallout 3 and the other stolen goods in my inventory showed up fine. Hell, I have stolen from merchants, in their store, then sold their stuff back to them. I am not sure if the items that didn't show were even stolen.

Other bugs:

*Sometimes weapons disappear from your hands
*Sometimes, next to objects, your field of view gets obscured by your "arms" in first person
*I have seen live and dead NPCs fall through the terrain.

The game is worse than FO3, in terms of apparent glitches. FO3 was janky, but NV looks downright sloppy. 12 hours of play and the number of little bugs is astounding.

I have been banned from gambling in all but 2 of the casinos. I roll in with 10 Luck, buy 1,000 chips, max bet of 200 on the slots, 2 min later, JACKPOT!

I haven't been banned from the Ultra Lux yet because I can't find any slot machines in their casino and blackjack takes a lot longer to max out. The Tops was also not being very loose with their slots and so I lost $2,000 caps before I won it all back plus $3,000 in blackjack. I think in all the blackjack hands, I've lost 4 times.

The casino manager's are pretty funny. I'll reach a certain payout and they come over to give me some cheap gift like booze or something. But then a min later they are super pissed at me.

I think I've got something like 35,000 caps. It helps since my barter skill is 11. Everything costs a lot.

-----

I've also seem to hit a quest glitch in Freeside where I've completed quests I've never started without doing half the requirements. Then after being in The Strip, I crashed a few times which had never happened before that. Seems the further I go, the more buggy it gets.

Freeside spoiler

Spoiler:

While doing the pimping quest, I accidentally finished (which I had never started) the debt collector quest. When I got back to the Freeside casino, I took up the bounty hunter mission to go after the old bounty hunter... except he was still in the casino at the time since the quest order was all messed up. After accepting the quest and not even knowing who it was I was supposed to kill, the casino guards all opened fire on him and there was a shoot-out about 10 feet away. He was killed and I picked up his hat and turned in the quest. A weird bug, but very enjoyable.

Ultra Luxe

Spoiler:

I love the missing son quest. I also love how when you are too stupid to do something, it gives you really dumb things to say such as "Please...umm.....go into the freezer...um..." or "ROBOT!... LET ME THROUGH!" I couldn't figure out how to get him into the freezer so I just shot the chef with a silenced pistol I picked up off a random assassin who may or may not have been scripted to attack me during that quest. No I've got a stash of pistol and club weapons behind a planter in the Ultra Luxe. Quite a great little quest.

The Tops Main Story Quest

Spoiler:

Black Widow on Benny is awesome. Can't believe he fell for it. Then I shot him in the face with "Lucky" the awesome magnum I just looted, open the closet door and get greeted by a hillarious "Yes Man." Quite an amazing sequence. "I know I shouldn't tell you all this, but what can I do, I'm programmed to do whatever people ask!"

I feel like the game is getting buggier and buggier, but sometimes it results in completely awesome things happening.

Yeah, I've counted 5 quests now that get messed up if you do them out of order. I guess Obsidian isn't really used to the whole do what you want when you want thing and expected people to do them a certain way.

Also, anybody having problems with disappearing companions? ED-E seems to be gone. I still have his perk and I never got a death message. So I figured I must have left him somewhere but when I try to enter a no companion zone it reads as there being a companion with me. He doesn't show up on tracker and I don't see him anywhere. He doesn't follow through fast travel either.

I had that problem with Dogmeat in F3. Very frustrating.

The brotherhood of steel quests are mother f*cking tedious.

Has there been any press about how well NV sold? While there was a bit of bad press over the bugs, I can't help thinking that most won't care, or that it will just be a fast trade-in.

24.5 hours played over two days and I've not even set foot on the strip yet.

Yep, It's a Fallout game alright

Question about one of the minor quests from the NCR base outside Vegas:

Spoiler:

Some woman wants me to go collect the body of her husband from where the Fiends killed him. I get to the body, looted the dogtags etc (which I assumed would have been all you needed) and went back to her but she didn't acknowledge it so I'm assuming I need to grab the rest of him as well. What am I missing?

Surely they can't be expecting me to physically DRAG the body all the way back over there using the "Z" key? Because that would be crazy.

Sometimes quest trigger conversations don't trigger right. Try engaging dialog multiple times.

Looks like it's leading the US sales chart on Amazon

I've been playing on Hardcore/Very Hard, and I started getting really cocky after I dominated the entire early game. I've been going realtime, and just popping enemies with 9/10mm pistols, or knifing the critters, without even getting close to death. Powder Gangs, scorpions, etc were all manageable.

After I wandered off more (I'm level ~10 now), the enemies I meet are much tougher. In fact, a lot of them initiate the red shield symbol when I attack them. My SMGs/pistols all activate it, and even my cowboy .357 gun pings the red shield (I have ~64 gun skill). My caravan shotgun pretty much is useless, unless I use up a perk on that Shotgun Surgeon.

Wow, this makes me really wonder the possibility of a big gun character, if each gun bullet from a minigun is usually around the same or less than SMGs. Even against Cook Cook's Flamer, my Light Leather Armor activated the red shield.

Anyone here has any luck with the "classic" big guns (Flamer, minigun) on Very Hard here? I eventually want to make a 80s style action hero character, and a Kickpuncher character.

I had my doubts about how well Veronica could handle herself in a fight, but she killed three giant radscorpions while I was reloading a gun. Keeper.

Have you tried using armor piercing rounds? AP rounds for armored targets and hollow points for better unarmored damage.

Oh my god, laser tommy gun.
Oh my god.....

OH. MY. GAAAAAWD!

Oh man I just had my first fight with a Cazador. It was a hard-won fight for a level 3 speech specialist; thankfully the Cazador decided to focus on the Viper gunslingers attacking me first, giving me ample time to leap & hide and find a good sniping shot.

Shucks! One of the few things I'm disappointed in is the (so far) complete removal of the 'reactions to player actions' from the NPCs. Some of my favorite things to do in Fallout 3 involved jumping on tables, throwing crap around, jumping like crazy, etc., just to hear the incredulous responses from the populace. Now you can shoot a hole in the wall an inch away from their face and they don't even blink. Has anyone encountered any such 'What the hell's wrong with you?!' responses from the NPCs, or have those reactions been removed entirely?

They make comments about your companions, like the eyebot and rex, they also told me to mind my space and to not look at them. Not sure if those were reactions or just incidental dialog.

I had sort of the same problem with ED-E. I told him to go back to Primm (needed party room for a quest) and when I went to Primm, he wasn't where he was supposed to be. I looked all over to find him even in the other "send companion to X" place.

I ended up trying the "player.moveto " console command. I'd never used them before and didn't have to enable the console on the Steam version. Then I was teleported to the Primm house and there he was. Worth a shot.

his ref id is 001732d1. (there are other ref id's for other versions of him, so if you've done part of his quest, look to his page on fallout.wikia.com http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/ED-E)

The kid crier just out of Freeside was pissing me off, so I aimed at his head. His response was suitably entertaining, so the invincibility of children remains untested at this time.

Yeah I did that. After I posted I moved to him. He wasn't there. I figure he must've died but the ED-E has died must not have triggered and his body disappeared. So I used his reference ID to target the theoretical him, resurrected, and then moved him to me. (prid 'ref id', resurrect, exit console, prid 'ref id', moveto player. All his inventory was gone but I didnt have much in him anyway.
Yay console.

Annoying: In Camp McCarran I approached a door that was guarded by two NCR (I have positive standing with the faction). They told me that the area was off-limits to civilians. A second later they told me I had had my chance, turned hostile and started shooting at me.

Any pointers on the Three-Card Bounty quest? I'm Lvl10 or 11, focused on Guns and technical skills. Trying to take on Cook-Cook with Cass and E-DE just results in a total wipe every time. I can't even get close enough to

Spoiler:

kill his favourite Brahmin

. And since I used my last Stealth Boy to steal the flamer from the Silver Rush (to make Vault 22 a bit more bearable) and I can't find any more, Stealth isn't an option either...

Edit: Another question. Speaking of the Silver Rush, the flamer was lying on the table and I could easily have paid for it (I think), but it just didn't show up on the list of items for sale when I spoke to Gloria. How does that work?
