Fallout: New Vegas - Fall 2010

Favorite bit of dialogue so far (Novak related):

Spoiler:

"We got us a chupacabra with an automatic weapon."

Another update already? Is anyone else getting an update right now from Steam?

Ricardo Queso. Luck/Intel character with a small guns focus.

Apparently it fixes some head spinning bug people were having.

Also, my character's name is Clocky McChair. Those were the first two things I noticed when the name thing popped up.

I see what you did there.

Balanced SPECIAL with an emphasis on guns and speech. Aside from that, having an entire gang of Elvis impersonators is awesome.

So, when you chose Fedora McQuaid, where you looking at a hat and Total Recall?

Inspired by Las Vegas' Richard Cheese.
I also like using Chet Awesomelaser of PA DND fame, but I felt Mr. Queso and the Vegas thing fit better.

FWIW, I'd enjoy seeing what other people use for names.

Does anyone else continue to feel like they are completely under-leveled for quests? I'm about 7 or 8 hours in (around level 7 or so) and I keep getting quests I have to abandon. The first part will be fine and then to finish them I have to go and do something that is impossible for my character. I'm not rushing off into crazy parts of the wasteland either. These are quests from the first couple of towns you run into.

I had the same problem for a little while. I would recommend sticking to the quest "route" that starts to appear. South, southwest, east, northeast, north. I tried to hike straight to Vegas, picked up a couple quests along the way, and got killed several times before I finally gave up on that.

Also: Traveling around the wasteland with Felicia Day? Priceless.

Well, I hit my first crash. Of course, I neglected to turn off Steam Cloud Sync and lost an hour or so due to the loss of autosaves/quicksaves. I tried renaming the .fos.bak files to .sav and just plane old .fos (deleting the ones that were already named that), but I had no luck.

I'm gonna have to take a break for a little while.

I actually just renamed the extension on the autosave and quicksave .fos.bak files. I'm going to try and rename them steamcloudcansuckit.fos and ihatelosinghoursofgameplay.fos when I get home from work today. Which me luck!

Hells yeah! It worked.

Another update from Obsidian, looks like they're working around the clock to patch things up. They are disabling Steam Cloud until they fix the saved games bug.

And I thought this was pretty interesting:

And finally, a quick tip: Be aware of your faction status before assuming the game is broken. Factions will react very strongly to you based on your current armor. If you’re wearing Powder Ganger or Caesar’s Legion armor, you will be shot on sight by the NCR (and vice versa). Also note that there are groups of renegade Powder Gangers (known simply as “Escaped Convicts”) who will shoot you regardless of your faction status.

The radio stations are pretty weak. There's a

Super Mutant radio station

that seems to play the same two songs over and over.

I do like the Marty Robbins they play though. I only wish there were more old country floating on the airwaves. Plenty of good songs they could have added for little or no cost. Boo!

I finally made it to the strip and have my Highroller Suite! This game just gets more and more interesting (addicting).

I'm finding the third-person view a lot better than in Fallout 3. Not good enough that I'd use it all the time, but, I might use it more often when just hiking through the wasteland.

Name's Sender. Currently a level 4 neutral wanderer high on Luck and sharp on Perception, while weak Strength keeps me traveling light. I'm particularly skilled with guns, how to repair said guns, and I can light up a mean campfire. I hate '50s music so turn that radio off! I'm also a teetotaler and don't do no drugs.

I almost died when he said that.

Permanent storage,

Spoiler:

In Novac, if you pay for (or otherwise get) a room in the motel, they say you can use it for however long you want. I figure you can store stuff in there and also sleep in the beds as much as you want. Sort of like the house in Megaton

EVEN MORE OF A SPOILER

Spoiler:

After you kill the innkeeper, I guess you still get to use that room.

Which character is Felicia Day? The one that takes you through the tutorial aka the Moira model? Maybe all the women look like that.

I just looked up some of the voice actors. I thought Doc Mitchell sounded familar. Michael Hogan did a very good job not sounding like himself.

Was very happy when I talked to Easy Pete and he didn't have "Old Man Voice #1" from Fallout 3. The amount that they reused voice actors took me out of the world.

Big, understandable bashing from Tom Chick. I like his reviews. He's usually pretty sensible and reasonable, but you have to pay attention to what's written and just ignore the score.

There seems to be a consensus: it was made by Black Isle/Obsidian people. I don't think they ever, ever released one game that wasn't plagued with issues at launch. The good bit is that almost all their games are memorable, and if the funds aren't cut, they manage to get fixed in due time. Good writers, average coders?

Nevertheless, I'm still interested. I like the roughness around the edges.

Booted this up at 4.50am to unlock on steam and grab a quick couple of hours before work...

I thought that was him. Decidedly less grizzled and gruff than normal. Very unsettling - if he offered me any soup/something to drink I'd have been slightly suspicious ;).

Still, at least his head wasn't spinning

Felicia Day is the girl with the dog that does the tutorial stuff right?

I got an Xbox 360 FO: NV title update this morning when I booted it up.

I may have made my first big mistake. My first encounter with a particular major faction. Harsh words were exchanged and a job was assigned: I was to tell all that I met about what horrors I had stumbled upon. We parted on peaceful terms... for a few seconds. I shot first, at the back of their leader's head. He died, and I killed all of his followers as well. I don't imagine they'll be quite so chatty with me next time, which makes me wonder ICly if I didn't just make one hell of an enemy, and OOCly if I just cut out one hell of a lot of content. Ideally no one would ever know as I left no survivors. My faction standing tells me otherwise.

Oh well. At least I got a neat hat out of it.

My Fallout fantasies continue...I saw this screencap from Yojimbo and thought how cool it would be to make a Fallout game inspired by the film. A samurai western with monochromatic grayscale graphics in a post-apocalyptic version of feudal Japan would be epic.

How exactly would they come about their apocalypse? Feudal nuclear war?

No. She's one of the followers you can acquire...

Edit: I'm going to put the rest of this in spoiler quotes even though I don't say exactly where she is or her name. Just in case.

Spoiler:

...and she's much closer (literally and along the main quest line) to Vegas. You'll know her when you talk to her. Her character model doesn't look like the real Felicia. Well, cute and white, but that's it.

I was wandering through the fantasy section of a used bookstore when I came across the greatest name ever:
Wolf Dragonard.

The white gloves creeped me out. So I went off on them with a silenced 22lr pistol and sneak crits.

So if a faction hates you is there any way to change that? I feel like I never got a chance to meaningfully interact with the Powder Gangers because they shot at me from the start.

Collect 30 scorpion tails for them every day for 5 months.

Wait. Wrong game.
