Penguin's Ohio S&T 10-23-10 (Reach, Mario Kart, Rock Band 2, Board Games, and Beer)

Wow. The amount of folks coming out for this is simply mind blowing. Where the heck were all of you for previous OH slap and tickles?

I think there was a small one in Columbus, OH a few months ago.

Yep, I was there; it was me, Phish and Lupus.

A couple reasons this got out of hand so quickly:

1.) I picked a good weekend for it. Summer stuff is done, holiday stuff is yet to get rolling. Good timing for this kind of thing.
2.) Coincidence! Hedge turned my birthday into a whole to-do. Look at all the freaking attention we generated! We're an amazing community and for some reason we mobilized on this.
3.) I am extremely popular (and handsome).
4.) I already had a party ready to go before I invited you guys. I think, because there was already stuff happening, there was less pressure for everyone to come. Thus, a ton of people are coming. On top of that, someone is making sure everything is as smooth as possible for people. /shrug. i'm a giver. A party where you just need to show up and only bring the stuff yo want to bring but you know there will still be fun no matter what? Easy!
5.) Child's Play fundraiser.

Mostly, it was number 3 but these are the main reasons, I think. The great thing about this is, seriously, %70 of the goodjers within 200 miles are coming (wish you could make it, J, i really do). I predict we'll have much, much better turnouts for future S&Ts now that we're all going to be personally acquainted.

Mostly, it was number 3

You forgot to add your widely-known humility to the list.

PC stuff

Ah well, I'll bring my laptop anyway, just in case.

Might I add?

6.) Filthy Enablird

Truth. Does it help to get people there? Maybe.

Hey, speaking of which. Gunner, you're only in VA, come on over.

Yea, this has definitely been a perfect storm of timing and other assorted factors. There's always next go-round though

Nooooooo!!!

My sister (who I hasn't seen in a year and a half) just told me, this weekend, that she's flying in for her birthday next weekend. There's going to be a big family dinner and drinks after. Guess what day that takes place? Saturday.

Alhough, I'm really irritated that no one told me until now, and that this means I can't attend the Penguin-con, I am really excited to see my sister.

Seriously bummed. :\

Ouch. That's a tough break, frames. Sorry you can't make it.

Just remember: we'll be going for a long, long time. You're welcome to come later.

I'll have fun for you. Maybe. There's a good chance I can attend. I'll have to double-check for family events this weekend (bro's b-day's today, but we cele'd last week), and have to figure out transportation to Toledo as I've been mobile-less since said bro put it in the proverbial cemetery this summer. Or, if the guys from SE Michigan already planned on taking I-80, I'm only a minute off of an exit. I'll shoot Crispy a message since he's the vanpool king.

Nice =) hope you can figure out transportation.

Less than a week YAY!

We could always do a Mario Kart Tourny or SSB Tournys. I am game for whatever.

Can't wait for Saturday!

Is there anyone who could bring a real live version of Carcassonne? I love it on XBL but want to try it analog style.

As far as carpooling goes. I will be riding up with a a friend of mine (non Goodjer), if he gets bored/flaky I might want/need to bum a ride from one of the southern Ohio Goodjers to get home. I don't want to leave early and miss anything, but don't want him to have to stay if he feels like leaving. Wooster is just a small detour off of most of the major highways (71, 76, & 30); gas money will be provided if this service is needed.

I have Carcassonne and will bring it with me. The only thing is... my kids got into during the great Trash All Of Daddy's Expensive Stuff Tornado of June 2010 and I'm not sure if I'm missing pieces or not. (I'll check the contents tonight to see what's what). My deck of "Bang!" seemed to have taken the brunt of the destruction though.

I can provide a full copy if you cannot, L&L. I don't remember which friend I know owns it, but I think they're coming.

Good news, Carcassonne's intact. Added it to the spreadsheet.

Sounds like a lot of fun.

Because we really like to organize stuff like this and because it should be fun, we're going to have a running competition over the course of the night.

Penguin, you handsome devil, what are you talking about? Excellent question, inexplicably returning questioner. What I'm talking about is an Omega-thon of sorts. Basically, as a means of raising money for child's play, we'll have a meta game running all night where you get points for doing stuff.

What kinds of stuff? Well... everything, frankly. Or most everything. There will be a number of organized tournaments running throughout the night. Most of the points will come from those.

But I'm crap at Halo, why would I participate in that? Fair point. That's why we'll also be handing out points for playing board/ card games you haven't played before. Want some points? Play A Game of Thrones. Or Shogun. Or hell, give Catan a try if you've never played before. Games you play for the first time are 3 points (just get someone to sign off on it for you). Games you have played before can be played for points as well, but only with some competition. Let's say I want to play Battlestar Galactica (which I have played a dozen times). I gather at least 4 more people and we play. I win. Well, team Cylon gets 5 points each for winning and the fleshbags get 2 points each for playing. Or, if it was 6 player Risk, winner gets 5 points and second place gets 4, all the way down to the poor 6th place player who only gets NOTHING. But you only get points for playing a game once. So take your first time points or take your placement points. Feel free to play as many times as you like but you're only getting points for something once. General rule: max points per game is 5 but you can be under that be having less than 5 people, so sit down and play Fluxx for a win with 3 people? You're only getting 3 points. But play a game with 5 and get 5. Be social!

Since this will be sort of played by ear, we'll establish points rulings as we go and we'll all generally be on the honor system. The prizes aren't good enough to cheat, really.

Also, the big scheduled tournaments will have the most points, probably. So things will be skewed towards the video game stuff where we can have spectators. Don't worry, if you want to spend all night playing board games or Gamma World, we'll figure something out.

Ok, so what's the point of all this? Other than fun? Well after all the announced organized tournaments we'll take the top 8 point getters (or 16, I'm playing it by ear a bit) and have a big public tournament with them. Should be fun.

And they win... what, exactly? Look, the prizes are crap so really it will be just fame. But since I plan on doing this every year, I'm considering making a trophy or a plaque that we can put people's names on. That will be fun. Maybe we can treat it like the Stanley Cup and the winner gets it for the year. /shrug

Who is organizing all of this? Well... I'm hoping this will basically just run itself. I'll print out some cards so you can keep track of your points, simply fill them out. If someone wants to run a tournament, talk to me and tell me how many points will be up for grabs, then go have at it. No worries. The person organizing the tournament or teaching the board game will sign off on everyone's points and if the organizer can't play in the game, they will get points for running or teaching the game if they want. Everyone wins.

Some of this stuff can really take a long time to do. What if I want to spend my time playing long games and I miss out on things? I don't want to be punished for participating in a 5 hour BSG game. That's a fair point. If a tournament or game runs too long and you miss out on stuff, we'll skew the points for it accordingly. I'm hoping this is simply a meta game running in the background and no one is trying to game things for points too hard. We'll play it by ear. I'll add a "length of game" column to the scoresheet so we make sure people get credit for their gaming.

Wait, so how does this raise money for Child's Play? Oh, well instead of passing the hat or whatever, I'll just put a suggested donation of $10 pricetag on this thing to participate. You can still be in tournaments if you don't want to, no big deal. It's just the final competition? Those will all be people who donated. Or chose not to. Again, this is suggested. Donate more. Donate less. Donate nothing. It's just a fun alternative to simply taking money =)

Sound like fun?

Sounds fun to me!

I am going to be raking in the points, I have never played a single one of those games you listed. (besides Risk)

Watch out! I am coming to win. /flex

Whoa, this means I'm in.

you'll have healthy competition from me lol. Never played any of them either.

I'll post a list of what tournaments we're running later today or tomorrow. Still working on the schedule.

One other thing: please bring console games you want to play. Not only can we run tournaments or competitions with them but just for general fun. I plan on bringing Modern Warfare 2 and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. Why? Because I like them and there should be consoles free to play them on =)

Apparently 10-23-10 is also International Gamma World Day or some such marketing nonsense.

It's sitting here besides me, so it will be at the party if you want to get your weird 4e mutant hybrid gaming on.

Is that the game Penny Arcade was talking about a couple weeks ago with the card decks?

Yup. It's basically 4th edition with random powers. Should be fun. I'm giving a dry run with my local people tomorrow so I have people that can run for Saturday.

Well my plus one bailed. Even though I reminded him several times last week, he still managed to forget what weekend it was and make other plans (stupid taking nephew to the circus for his bday)
How early are we starting set up, I can be there as early as I want now.

I believe Oilypenguin wanted slaves helpers there by 10am so he can crack the whip make sure they know how he demands everything be setup would prefer things.

Set up starts at 10AM. I should have roving bands of go-fers running around from 10 until we start at 3. You're more than welcome to show up at any point in there.

And that goes for all of you, feel free to come early.
