I am sure someone will swing in here and tell us that writing off the game based on the demo is just plain wrong (maybe it is?), but I got the exact same impression as you, Thin_J.
Well if they release another demo and the driving model is different and feels better, then I'll change my mind, but the driving remained largely unchanged from the Prologue release to the time of the demo. Assuming it's going to suddenly change for the retail release after it stayed so similar for so long... well that seems awfully naive. I just don't see it changing that much.
At the moment they've proven to me that their game is not what I want out of a sim(ish) racing game on the consoles. It's on them to prove otherwise. I'm not going to spend $60 to see if they misrepresented their final product with a bad demo. That's their problem.
I didn't get my ps3 until the very beginning of this year, so my anticipation for this title hasn't been dragged out over a 5 year period. I haven't atually tried the demo. I suppose my excitement is based off of how much enjoyment I extracted from gran turismo 1-4. PD has yet to disappoint me, so I'll be naive and give them the benefit of the doubt until I have the final product in my hand.
Also, I find the 360 controller superior to the ps3, but only marginally so. I'll never understand the mad hatred to anything but the finicky triggers. Maybe my hands are just strangely shaped =/
They've got a great list of features going into GT5, but it all comes down to how it feels to put a car around the track. The last demo left me cold, so unless we see a new demo with better car/racing feel, I can't get all that excited about this one.
Anyone still looking forward to this next month? I'm going to place a pre-order for the collector's edition, and I just recently bought a G27 to replace my Driving Force Pro. Like a lot of people I was also kinda bummed out by that "demo" but I'm optimistic that the retail version will be different.
That demo really left me feeling pretty flat about the game. I don't think I like driving simulation enough to put the time in with GT5. Well, at least not at launch price.
I'm waiting to see how it's received. I really like Forza 3, and haven't played as much of that as I should. Keep meaning to get back into that again, and can't talk myself into buying GT5 unless it really brings something new and fresh.
But I'm interested.
Finding out you need to drop half a grand on ski passes this month makes you decide to rent a lot of things. I'll likely rent this because everyone says it's so purty.
Hey, guess what got delayed? Ugh.
Details are here:

And I was so looking forward to playing this on Nov 2nd. They're saying sometime this "holiday season" but that could mean anything.
Looks like I'll have to stick with NFS Shift for awhile longer.
So how many more delays til we get to start calling this GT Forever?
You must be joking...

Damn! You beat me to it.
While I personally don't care about GT5(no PS3) I feel really, really bad for folks who have been holding out on this one. Given how good Forza has gotten, how good will this have to be to make up for all the delays?
Especially considering that since GT4 was announced, Turn 10 has released 2 versions of Forza.
I saw the a news post about this and couldn't help but chuckle.
I mean really, did anybody not see it coming?
All I care about is that bet someone made on the Bombcast
Here's a good video comparing Shift with Forza 3 where this is demonstrated. The actual comparison starts at around 1:20 in. They need to do one of these for GT5.
Wow, the difference is sick when you put them side by side. Too bad Shift's lacking in other areas

Yeah, unfortunately we won't be seeing anymore of this business as a result of said bet.
I chuckled to myself today when I read the delay news. I don't give a damn at all about the game, maybe even the sim racing genre, but I always get a kick out of this game getting pushed back. It was announced at E3 06 FFS.

I suspect Microsoft and Forza had really made this hard on Sony. GT 5 was supposed to highlight why a PS3 is the ultimate console, but Forza keeps releasing better looking and playing products. I think Sony had a realistic fear about what the GT5 vs. Forza comparison would say about their console. And the longer they delay it, the more pressure there is to release a game that will be jaw dropping.
I'm sure they could have released a quality version of the game some time ago.

Kinda makes me wish that you could take the best stuff from Shift, and the best stuff from Forza 3 and put it all into Forza 4.
Looks like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit for me! It's not a driving sim, but at least it's something related to racing that's coming out on time

Or you could buy Forza 3 Gold
The thing I find so strange about Gran Turismo 5 is the inclusion of NASCAR, rally and now go-karting. These additions must have contributed to the delays and they seem like niche features. How much NASCAR and go-karting will most GT players be doing?
I do admire ambition but a measure of focus is admirable too. And I'm skeptical GT5 can provide the best experiences in all these drastically different sports. If they do pull it off, I'll be truly amazed.

What will be funny is if DNF actually ships before GT5. Now that Gearbox has a hold of DNF, that may become a reality.
Man, wanting to see how this game turns out is one of the reasons I still have not decided between an XBox or a PS3. I am lousy at sim racing but like to pretend I am good enough that having a great racer on the platform would help tip the balance in favor of the PS3. If Polyphony doesn't get this game out in the next 2 months, Sony will score 0 in that category.

I wouldn't hold your breath. It's also probably not the best reason to decide between consoles, especially when each has so many other great exclusives on both systems... like Forza 3.
It's not the only reason, it's just one of the reasons. I've got a list of criteria that I am basically scoring the consoles on - the quality of their flagship racer is just one of those. Sony is actually strong on a lot of other exclusives that I am interested in, but if this game turns out lousy or remains vaporware, it's a negative in their camp.
