Deus Ex

Finally playing it for the first time. As someone who didn't play it first time around, do you think I'll enjoy it? Does it hold up?

I haven't played it in years but I do think it still holds up. Sure, graphically it may not be the fastest ship in the fleet, but the story is excellent. I played the PS2 port so someday soon I hope to fire it up on the PC. It continues to be widely praised, especially in the Deus Ex: Human Revolution thread.

Say hi to TT for me.

I play it once every year. Best game ever and it still holds up. Reinstall!

Get the HD texture and model packs, they make it a little more easy on the eyes. Yes, it still holds up, although I always end up getting distracted / bored a little after I get to Hong Kong, and stop playing.

My steam install is buggy =(

I'm tempted. I bought it a couple of years ago after hearing so much about it, but never got far.

Anyone wanna help a (lazy) bro out and point to the hi-res patches? I'm sure a lot of people will appreciate it.

I know I'd appreciate it. I'll eventually get around to playing this.

The HD Texture pack is fantastic. It's about a gig of textures. A must have when ou want to play the game these days.

Also get the direct3D update. It's very nice to play the game at the native res of your monitor.

Its been awhile since I looked for a solution but last time I tried playing it I couldn't get the cut scenes to not race by at lightning speed. Can anyone throw me a bone or is this fixed in the steam version?

I don't feel that DE really benefits that much from high res textures if that's all they're going to do to the world, it just seems to grab your attention and say "big flat wall with a repeating texture" or "big boxy object with a texture to show detail". It highlights the deficiencies compared to modern graphics rather than hide them. It seems if you really want to 'bring it up to date' you have to do a lot more work and remake the world, like Black Mesa. Texture mods just don't really improve the game for me.

(plus DE had the unreal engine 1 fractal 'detail textures' that add detail when you get close)

I might try finishing The Nameless Mod later on, before DEHR comes out.

Forcing V-synch in the drivers usually solves it. You can also try stuff like CPU core affinity, disabling hardware audio in the control panel, capping the framerate in an .ini and IIRC there's some launch command for capping CPU cycles as well.

I am also just playing this for the first time, and about 3/4 of the way through it.

Spoiler:

I'm at the sub-pen.

I would say overall that it "holds-up." I really haven't played anything like it. There really seems to be a plethora of ways to get through each mission. My biggest complaint (and it's not that big) is that I can't hold all the weapons/inventory that I would like to. Although, I really only use the sniper rifle, assault rifle, and a melee weapon.

Playing through it right now for the second time (played it for the first time when it came out ages ago) and still really enjoying it. It holds up very well and it's cool to see the concept of alternative solutions to get through levels implemented so early.

I'd also play Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines if you liked Deus Ex, since after a bunch of user mods and graphics updates, it's actually one of the best implementations of the ideas that Deus Ex brought to the table.

Thanks for that. This was the problem I was having. All the dialogue raced by and clipped the end off everything so I had no idea what was going on. This was in the Steam version.

Have you tried one of these fixes? If so which one worked best for you? I'm at work so I can't try at the moment but am dying to find out.

Dear God. The interface. It's painful. I'm starting to see the value in dumbing things down for consoles.

But it works well enough. If it was made today it would certainly be different, but for a game that offers the flexibility and amount of information that DE does, you need a certain interface.

What will be interesting will be what DEHR does. So far they've been very careful not to show their UI, which I suppose means they know they need to take care with it.

Aren't there HUD mods for Deus Ex? I thought I remembered installing one last time I played through.

I never played Deus Ex until recently, despite it having some vague similarities to some of my favorite games (System Shock 2 and Thief). You know what? Didn't like it. Couldn't get past the graphics and the interface. It felt to me like it aged worse than its contemporaries. And yet I went back to System Shock 2 last year and still loved it.

Some aspects of it have aged, some aspects are still superior to anything made in the last decade.

You must have posted this in the wrong thread.

Seeing as I have been hopelessly in the grasp of Deus Ex for about 5 years, can someone explain to me what exactly is bad about the interface? I found it to be rather flexible seeing as it has a combination of quick-key inventory slots like most shooters and key mnemonics for quickly activating certain actions like recharge and heal from maintenance & med bots. I am interested in hearing from someone not so blinded.

Looking at the interface from a 2010 perspective, I'd say that it takes you out of the game and has you go into a full mouse driven menu is going to be a turn off for some, but looking at past PC games would be a perfectly logical thing to do and is the best way to manage the complexity in that game in the 90s.

Looking at it in comparison to what I'm expecting DEHR to do, I'm thinking inventory tetris will be gone although possibly with some weight/slots mechanic. Images/notes/conversations/logs will likely be gone from the interface, or all wrapped into one 'tasks' screen. Health/augs will be much simplified, I'm not expecting location based damage and augs to be something between DE and DEIW. Really less of a separation between being in and interacting with the world, and pausing to drink the reservoir of soda and mountain of soy and candy bars.

When I get a chance to try it out I'll post back here.

Oh yeah, I bought this game. Twice. I should probably play it sometime.

Necroing the thread since I started playing this for the first time yesterday.

I found instructions on how to set the screen resolution for my monitor (have to edit the .ini to get 1920 x 1080) but the HUD is huge at this resolution. I notice that if I set the resolution in-game to (say) 1600 x 900 then the HUD is much smaller but of course the whole thing looks fuzzy since it isn't at my monitor's resolution. Anyone know how to manually tweak the size of the HUD?

Try this.

edit:\ Baaaaalls.

This or this might help.
