3DS Catch-all

Man,I hope developers don't feel obliged to use the new hardware.. Two of my favourite games ever are World Ends with You and Phoenix Wright.

And The World Ends With You used the unique traits of the DS pretty extensively to the point that it would have been impossible on a single screen system and possibly also impossible without touch and sleep modes. I don't really get your comment unless you just mean you want it 2D. But I think that as TWEWY shows, you can have a stellar game that nobody ever thought possible with the new tech.[/quote]

No no, I like the unique DS features, but I'm worried that with an analogue pad. unique control schemes like that will be thrown out in favour of easier-to-program alternatives.

And it's 3d, kinda like the ni no Kuni game.

Hadn't considered that, but all I meant was there are lots of games on the DS (especially RPGs) that are more "traditional" and there's no reason to think there won't be the same on the 3DS.

We'll see. If Nintendo isn't heavy handed with "this must be in 3D" directives, kind of like Sony had the "no ports" directive for the PSP. I'm still going to wait and see, though. If it gets a bunch of great 2D games I can't pass up I'll buy it. Until then, the DS still has a large catalogue.

You can turn the 3D slider to 'off' for every game.... Sounds like 3D is not only optional but 2D is required.

I think that's missing my point. You have to be able to turn the 3D "effect" off. That doesn't mean the 3DS won't be flooded with traditional 3D games. Man, we're going to need a new word for the difference between a 3D game, like an open world TPS or FPS vs. a 3D game with actual 3D.

My worry is that most games will be 3D in style. That developers will see this as the replacement for the PSP, but with 3D "effects" and we'll see less and less traditional 2D games.

Heh. The whole 3D != 3D thing is going to get confusing over the next few years.

Ah the old 3De vs 3D debate. I propose we use 3De (3-dimensional effect) for this instead of 3D versus 2D.... funny how 2D doesn't need another letter to be able to work out what you're talking about. Just another facet of why 2D is better

I like the phrase 3DD for differentiating the real 3d from the fake one.

Everyone should call games with three dimensional graphics "polygonal."

Okay, the new LAyton is polygonal.

Just saw this article about Marvelous Entertainment (Little Kings Story, Muramasa) and they mentioned the 3DS and I immediately thought it would be pretty cool to see Muramasa displaying the layered backgrounds on different planes. Of course, slightly further down that came up:

A game like Muramasa could probably benefit from the 3D effect with all those background layers. It would also give you a chance to market the game to a new audience. What do you think?

That’s a pretty good idea! That is one of the many things we think our fans want, and we want to provide to them. We at Marvelous Entertainment want to continue to meet and exceed the expectations from our fans as we continue to bring them new experiences.

Honestly though, I would like to see an all new game implementing that stuff, and not just a port. Also, I could see games like Paper Mario working great with this sort of idea and I'm sure Nintendo would cook something spectacular up with it.

I thought Nintendo already announced a new Paper Mario for the 3DS. Was it a dream?

Nope. It's reportedly a wholly new game, which surprised me somewhat.

Also, they're fixing the series as far as I'm concerned. Super Paper Mario was a great story but the gameplay was pretty garbage, and they're returning to turn+timing based combat. And bringing partners back instead of pixls.

Oh, good. SPM seemed to have so much potential, and then it turned out to be such a bummer when I finally played it.

Sorry, I don't follow the news too closely. Should have just assumed it was coming.

You're crazy. Yeah, the whole 2D/3D thing didn't actually make for as many interesting puzzles as I was hoping, but I still really enjoyed the game. Still, I prefer the RPG combat since there's no point in making it a platformer when you've already got another Mario series entirely dedicated to platforming.

Super Paper Mario could have been fantastic with some better 2D/3D puzzles and a bit less dialogue. I hate to say that since the game had such stellar writing, but it simply had far too much stellar writing.

I absolutely am crazy, but I'm sticking to my guns on that point. I don't much like it when gameplay makes me want to stop playing but a good story compels me to keep going. Except the lizard-nerd's lair, I don't have one good memory of the actual meat of the game, level design, etc.

I can dig that they wanted to ease up on the RPG elements and make it more of a platformer, but without a run button to control the pace of movement, it made for a pretty crappy platformer too. The 2D/3D thing was a cool idea, but underutilized. And the pixel thingies were just weak.

I can't figure out if I disagree with any of the points put forward. I think I may pop Super Paper Mario in and try it again, since I haven't played it since it came out and at the time I may have just been over-excited to be playing a 2D Mario platformer again. I know I did enjoy switching between characters for their different abilities, and of course I just like leveling up, so I was probably much more forgiving of some weak platforming. I wonder if I'll like it as much this second time.

I'd actually like to see another game in this style, but without any of the problems. Essentially, regular 2D Mario platforming mixed with clever 2D/3D puzzles, along with the different characters with different abilities for various kinds of platforming challenges, all wrapped up in a neat little RPG shell.

I never played any of the paper Marios. My parents didn't let me get a console until the PS2 was all but dead.

I'd hesitate to call it a truly terrible game, just a disappointment after the brilliance that was TTYD.

I agree with you more than anyone else on this forum.

I agree as well, but to a lesser degree apparently.

Don't feel bad, I never got to play any of the Paper Marios before Super, so I found it to be an incredibly fun and creative platformer while everyone else seemed to do nothing but lament it.

I could definitely see myself having a different opinion of it if it had been the first Paper Mario I'd played. There are definitely things to like about it, but almost everything it did well was done at least as well by its predecessors.

I never played Super Paper Mario. As someone who never played any Mario RPGs is it worth tracking down?

Also, How cool would a 3d Mother game be? (I've only played 3 but I loved it)

I'd track down a copy of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door first. Twice as fun at half the price.

Is it anything like the GBa ones? I got quickly frustrated by the difficulty in Superstar Saga, and never got very far in it.

The writing and humor are of the same vein, but the gameplay is not. I did not like the puzzling part of the GBA/DS games, but loved both Paper Mario games.

I would feel lame if I didn't mention that Mario RPG for SNES should also be checked out. You can get it on VC or via filthy piracy.
