DmC - Twilight May Cry

Yes, there are.

Original, Chocolate, Salt'n'Vinegar and Patchouli.

When I go gay, I always choose the Salt'n'Vinegar. It is the flavor, I feel at least, that really commits to what it is selling.

They've gone from Ramstein to Dead Weather. Hmm, I'll see where this goes. The original is still my favorite, though I appreciated DMC3 and DMC4.

All I'm saying is if they're really going to revamp the series, they should totally revamp it. Incontinent cartoon Satan runs for mayor and you must use dialog trees to guide his campaign! He's incontinent for the sole purpose of making a terrible Devil May Crap joke.

Look, man, it's 3 in the morning. What do you want from me?

Well, I went from zero interest in Devil May Cry games to decent interest. Mission accomplished.

I dig a decent amount of Japanese culture in the form of games like Okami, Phoenix Wright, and Professor Layton, but I can only take so many plant monsters and white haired Final Fantasy types.

I'd also like to think that after two games from Ninja Theory where I thought everything about it looked pretty horrible until seeing all come together into something great in a demo, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

I... I'm not sure what I just saw but I think I love it.

I'm usually not a fan of these types of action games, but I've been loving all the footage they've released. Maybe the first Ninja Theory title I can enjoy?

This thread title makes me so pleased. And I'm not even an employee any more!

But yeah, it's not looking too shabby! Certainly come a long way since I left back in June. I hear they've put a lot of time into polishing the hell out of it.

I think I'm with you. Plus Ninja Theory has a good track record (with me anyway) so I was probably in anyway.

I confess that I can't see the gay in this game. Is it the lack of anabolic musculature?

Pushed back to Q1 2013 but also now coming to PC.

The demo has piqued my interest.

Yeah, this very quietly came out. Ninja Theory's got the slickest character action chops outside of Platinum, IMO. The visuals are kind of beautiful but also kind of gross, it's a style heavy in contrast. Very strange. Enslaved impressed me enough to guarantee my purchase, the demo reinforces that plan.

However, if you haven't liked DmC games before I doubt this'll change your mind.

Well, time to update that PS3...

Reviews are popping up, very positive so far. Hurray Ninja Theory.

I wish them well. I thought it was a damned travesty that Enslaved didn't sell better.

Great news. The first DMC remains one of my favorite PS2 games, but the series lost me with the travesty that was DMC2. Enslaved was a very big surprise for me, so I'm really excited to see what Ninja Theory has done with this series.

I would say to give DMC 3 and 4 a chance - I agree with you on 2, but the series really found its feet again after that.

DMC2 was somehow my introduction to the series, and in a vacuum it didn't seem half bad. Then DMC3 showed up and totally blew it out of the water, though I didn't end up playing all that much of it. Completely ignored DMC4 as I haven't found myself in the mood to play that type of game in quite a while. If Ninja Theory actually managed to nail this one I might just have to give it a chance.

I found DMC4 so punishingly difficult that I didn't enjoy it.

Good game combat, anyway. Story seems to be a bit sh*t. Basically, the opposite of Lollipop Chainsaw.

...I get the distinct feeling you'll get it from Gamefly for $15 >:O

Anyway, examples.

Five stars from Giantbomb's Brad Shoemaker.
1up.com gives it an A.
IGN gives the PC and 360 versions 8.9, PS3 version an 8.5.
Destructoid: 9.0
EGM - 9.5
theverge.com/gaming gave it an 8.

So you get the idea, folks. Good game, go get it if you're at all interested. I'll probably get it Saturday.

Hm, the couple reviews I read in full said the game's narrative was solid and presented some interesting and challenging social commentary. I guess I'll have to see for myself.

Ninja Theory cooked up a saucy little scene for the game in which they comment on the outcry regarding Dante's new look, and I love it.

Edit: I've been glancing up and down the comments sections in these reviews.. the game sure is divisive O.o

I guess the crowd that's traditionally been really into DMC runs a bit on the immature side. Remember the boycott of DMC4 for betraying Sony and going multiplatform? Doesn't that seem NUTS now?

Is this the same team who did Enslaved?

Also, never played a DMC game before. I picked the demo in PS3 and was pretty darned intrigued. Curious, once the reviews are all out, if this might be a good entry into the series.

It's the same developer - Ninja Theory - which is the only reason I'm considering picking this up at some point. I think I only played an hour or 2 of DMC1, and I never played any of the others. However, Enslaved was excellent.

Devil May Cry eventually got way too far up its own ass as a series, and the result is this complete reboot. It's a pretty big departure from the first four games, so I think if you want a jumping in point it's either this or playing DMC1. They did an HD remake of the first three games, so that's an option.

Having only recently picked up a PS3 I made Enslaved one of a handful of games I picked up right away. As soon as I finish the first Uncharted that will be my next console game.

Didn't know about that. That's hilarious

We were constantly getting hatemail during development. Also: see OP and thread title.

So, aside from just loathing the intro movie and it's extended "edgy" strip club sequence with the badly animated dancing and the terrible music, after a bit of play the game part is kinda great.

The moves and combos are - so far at least - all taken from previous DMC games. You do some of them a little differently, but they serve the same strategic purposes and the combat really seems to have a lot of the same depth that it should have. I enjoy the responsiveness of the dodging and the Tony Hawk-style combo listing on the side of the screen is a great addition that enhances the arcade score-chase that DMC combat is supposed to be.

They took away manual lock on, but so far that hasn't been an issue for me. The camera has been a problem from time to time, but not a gamebreaking one. I'm trying to go no-damage, so whenever it gets swooped in to the point that someone near enough to hit me is out of frame I tend to immediately dodge away and reposition, it's a bit frustrating at times.

By the way - always buy the Stinger first. It is by far the most useful move in the game for keeping your combo going when moving from target to target.

Read the rock paper shotgun review and more interested then normal. Only really enjoyed the first dmc but this looks good, and the demo was fun. Funny thing from the review is that they hated dante in the beginning but actually liked him in the end. I will miss the white hair honestly.

Bought it on a whim. I highly recommend it. Dante starts out sounding like a cocky-douche, but that changes.

Spoiler:

You'll actually start realizing it is a facade. On more serious moments, you can feel he is just an abandoned kid who had to make it somehow. I love the acting and the writing on his character. The others haven't made much of a showing so far (I'm maybe 2, 3 hours in), but I want to know more about Vergil and Kat, so that's something. The overall plot is standard heaven against hell fare, but Dante keeps it interesting.

Combat is top notch. This isn't my normal genre, but it feels so tight. The levels are also very fun, with some environmental surprises. I'm just echoing the reviews around, but it's about right.

So, I guess this is the recommendation of someone who isn't neither tied to the franchise nor has deep knowledge on brawlers. And hasn't finished the game. Take it as it is.
