DmC - Twilight May Cry

Pages

I looked and looked - no one's made a thread about the new Devil May Cry?

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/tg...

God - in that GT interview, he talks about changing the imagery and keeping the "essence" of the gameplay - then two seconds seconds later talks about changing his moves and the gameplay.

This game is DOOMED!

You mean there's people that play DMC because of the way the paper-thin characters dress?

I'm not crazy about the new design, but I don't know what else to say about the game at this point. We know virtually nothing about it.

They're upset about the redesign, and the new developer - Ninja Theory

I can't justify all the internet rage toward this game. DMC has always been on the metro side, but what was metro in 2001 to Japanese people is different from what is metro to Brits in 2010. The series was creatively bankrupt by the end of the third game, and it showed in the fourth. I think a new developer is a step in the right direction.

I'm of the mind that Bayonetta set the new bar for this kind of gameplay. I doubt Ninja Theory has the chops to reach that level, but we'll see.

Unfortunately, company restrictions prevent me from turning into a fanboy-hating monster, so I can't unleash the torrent of rage I would like to.

I would however like to reiterate a few points which have been made elsewhere:

  • This is a reboot. Capcom asked for it.
  • Capcom are the publishers. At any point they could have refused to sign off some part of the design. Or, hell, they could have just not greenlit the project and scrapped it entirely. They haven't.
  • The aim is to reach a wider audience with the reboot.
  • You've seen no gameplay yet.

For more details, there's an interesting interview at Eurogamer where the NT creative director, Capcom US, and Capcom JP all talk about the project.

Dante was (as said above...) a paper thin character anyway. The games were nothing but an excuse to run around shooting and stabbing monsters to death. Who cares what he looks like?

If the gameplay's fun I'll play it.

I agree with Lard here, it *looks* awful, and modelling what is an already established character in your own image is bad for your own company business, no matter if capcom wanted these developers to re-imagine the Ip. I.E: Activision: Hey, Ninja Theory, I loved your DMC, can you please re-imagine Call of Duty for us? NT: sure! no problem, glad you liked our game, here's our proposal, character will be just like me, but in militar fatigues. You like it?.

On the other hand, if they realease episodic content I can purchase online via steam or something like that, I'm all over this ; )

Some stuff!

Hey neat, I didn't know a fellow Minecrafter/GWJer worked at Ninja Theory.

I suggest you fellows/ladies keep it fast. I don't know about others, but I like my character action to make me feel like I'm slow at first, and a wizard with the controller after a while.

Also, keep going with the torture-room/interrogation stuff hinted at in the trailer. It is very, very cool. Make it weird! Weirder the better!

I realize you guys probably hate arm-chair developers, so take this with a grain of salt. You're the experts.

And when in doubt, put him on ice skates.

I dig the new design ideas, but I'm generally always interested in new takes on established characters and settings. I get pretty bored with sequels, and seeing things re-imagined usually gets me interested again. I didn't think I'd like what Bethesda did with Fallout, but I had so much fun that I put 200 hours into it. I've had enough good experiences to remain open-minded.

Please don't kill me : D

Harsh words those of mine, I'm probably just jealous of the developer's hair, mine is like the second dude that speaks there. Good luck with the project!

'scuse my bluntness (and seriousness - I know your post wasn't so!) here, but I want to put a nail in this right now:

Don't aim your suggestion gun at me, in this thread or elsewhere. Please. I don't have any power to implement them, and I am absolutely not going to sift through them, reporting them to the people that do. If you feel your voice needs to be heard by a developer, please contact Capcom or NT directly.

Obviously that's not to say you can't discuss what you'd like to see, but just don't expect me to do anything about it. Or justify anything that's been done. Or even reply at all :p

I'm not a fan of the new character design, but I'll reserve my judgement until I see some gameplay footage. The original DMC remains one of my favorite action games ever. I'm interested to see what a new developer can bring to the series.

Totally wasn't. Except the replying part, but now I know.

Yeah, I know. I just don't want this to turn into "Ask Ninja Theory About DmC", so I thought I'd make it clear. Pretend I'm not here and carry on with your business - I'll just step in to provide clarifications and possibly interesting stuff when it's relevant.

/hides again

Floomi, you should make the combat turn-based.

If it helps, I'll take all those questions. I'll provide (dubious) clarifications and possibly (made-up) interesting stuff.

I hereby promise that there will be an entire level with Dante on ice skates. "Press X to double-axle."

I liked what I saw from the trailer, vibe and visuals, so I was perplexed at all the hatred. Especially since it's unjustified imo. It's a reboot AND no gameplay exists. To each their own but the vitriol was/is beyond juvenille.

GL to you and your friends, Floomi.

I think the trailer looked pretty awesome.

That's much better. I'd write more, but I have to get to Game Stop to pre-order.

Twilight May Cry? Seriously? Most. Emo. Name. Ever.

It's not the real name, I put that because I was being a smartass.

Haha I totally bought it.

Big fan of DMC games. Don't really care that they are trying to reboot with a new character design. Only worry is Ninja Theory isn't all that strong from what I've seen and Bayonetta has indeed set a high bar.

Leigh Alexander has some interesting analysis on the reboot.

From her blog.

But again, we're talking about gamers, here, and many of them freak and pre-judge when they see something different. Easy for me to say -- even I had a teeny episode of nerd rage when I saw the trailer for the new Devil May Cry reboot. If my reaction had been any more knee-jerk, my cat would have gone flying across the room.

So I decided to examine the deceptively complex situation in an in-depth analysis at Gamasutra. What a double-edged sword for Ninja Theory, appointed as the new steward of a beloved Japanese franchise. I don't really envy them at all. I admit, I don't like it much more than some of you guys do, but let's be optimistic, because one trailer is not at all enough information on which to create a judgment.

Part of my hesitation comes from the ways I don't like to see Japanese art and design trends so quickly sloughed away in the eagerness to "globalize." Certainly, something's gotta change over there, but I don't know if the reason Japanese games don't sell in the West as well as they used to can be fixed by exporting properties to European studios. We'll see, I suppose.

And her Gamasutra piece on innovation in the extended console generation considering Bioshock Infinite and DMC.

*edit*

Although, maybe this should have its own thread. Not many people here seem to care about DMC so this is an interesting topic that could get lost.

I created one here.

I don't get the hate for the new Devil May Cry. Looks just as gay as Devil May Cry always has. Are there subtly different flavours of overly-flamboyant homosexuality that I'm not aware of?

Yeah. As far as I can tell, there's one flavour with white hair, and one flavour with dark hair, and the former is totally at loggerheads with the latter.

He struck me as more emo than homosexual this time around....

Yes, there are.

Original, Chocolate, Salt'n'Vinegar and Patchouli.
