Stylez's Ottawa S&T 10-23-10 (Street Fighter, Rockband 2, Board games.... better beer)

At Dysplastic's request here's the meetup info for the 23rd. Wife and I will have things read to go from 12pm onwards, so if you want to come by early to get your drink/game on by all means. Parallax has kindly offered rides if anyone needs a pickup, and I have couchspace for a few people if they wish to sleep over. If there is interest there may be a LAN component, as this is something I can set up for fairly quickly but let me know what the Ottawa area goodjers think.

Address info: 9 Castlefield Ave, Stittsville On.

I will have beer on hand, but some of you have fancier tastes than me no doubt, so bring booze/meat and we can grill it up.

What to bring?

Beer
Board games (Cash and Guns? Dominion?)
Arcade stick (PXA)
Beer
PC/gaming laptop (TBD)
Food
Significant others welcome!

Thanks for Posting and Hosting Stylez!
I can also provide rides to and from the venue (PM me), but I will only be leaving in the morning so if you come with me, be prepared to stay over or find another way home!

I'll bring some board game fun, including Dominion. Better to be stocked full of stuff and have too much than too little. Though I'm not sure I'll lug my whole PC over...maybe those with good laptops can set a couple up.

We should order a poster for the event

I can definitely bring my laptop which has decent enough graphics to play a few things. Like many others, I've also got a selection of console games I can bring as well as my fight stick.

I will see if the wife has plans, and what babysitting I can grab from my in-laws.

I would be coming back into town after the night is over, and could also offer a ride.

It's great of you to play host, Stylez!

For tabletop games I'm well equipped. I'll throw a selection in a box, but to give you an idea:

Castle Ravenloft
Cash n' Guns
Summoner Wars
Agricola
Puerto Rico
Zombies
Ticket to Ride

Plus others.

It's really unfortunate that Rock Band 3 comes out on the 26th, 'cause I'd be all over that. You guys will have to console yourselves with my awesome RB2 drum solos.

Oooh I'd love to play both Ravenloft and Agricola.

If I could get everyone who is interested in coming to just make a post here so I can gauge seating area

I'm in.

Are we starting in the afternoon (hint, hint), as opposed to the evening? I mean, some of us should be getting to bed; it's almost 9 o'clock...

Ottawa represent!

Any of our Kingston/Montreal Goodjer kin who've hinted at coming to previous S&Ts interested in making a trip?

I'm going to try and get there. It would be good to meet a few more folks here in the big O.

I just bought the wife a new laptop, so it could probably go along with me. Would just need to check everyone out on steam to see what the options are.

Were any of you in the old AOE2 thread. I didn't play that time, but I have found my disk. Of course I'm also willing to buy a good LAN title. Sad to say I've never been to a LAN party so I don't know what the preference is.

Also have a folding 30" x 72" table and folding chairs if needed.

Chumpy: Thinking of getting started around noon actually, Wife and I will be set for goodjer arrival from then on.

Ghost: Table and folding chairs will definitely come in handy. I have 2 tables and some chairs, but I think we may not end up with enough.

Ghostship:
LAN titles are hard because everyone has their preferences. Last time we did one I wanted to play L4D and Demigod, but that didn't work out because people either didn't have the necessary specs or didn't own the games (and speaking of owning the games, to get people to play having it available via digital distribution is basically a must).

Ultimately, we played older Half Life, UT and Source mods and had some good fun - though this time we may want to limit it to one FPS and break out into some other genres. I was thinking Alien Swarm would be a great option, since it's available for the great price of FREE. A good RTS available for cheap on GOG or something could also be fun - Age of Wonders maybe?

----

Afternoon start is a great idea.

Age of Wonder: Shadow magic is amazing, but I don't know how quick a game of that would go, it feels like it'd be extremely slow.

I was thinking some older RTS games. Total Annihilation or Supreme Commander are excellent fun on the LAN, and TA will run on damn near anything now. UT2k4 with some mods is excellent too, Clone Bandits being my favourite in a LAN environment.

I'm planning on trying. Supposed to be on call that weekend though, so if I can't find someone to cover me I won't make it. I really would like to meet some goodjers though...

So it looks like I will be able to arrange things to leave Ottawa at around 3:30-4ish, and I will be leaving Stittsville in the evening, probably around 11:30ish-midnight. Being properly domesticated, I have a minivan, and can offer rides to and from if they are needed.

I'm going to bump this to remind everyone that this is happening (I know there are more Ottawa area GWJers out there!) but also to not that I won't be able to make it - I was reminded that I have a wedding to attend. As a side-note, it will be my 7th wedding of the year, and I'm about ready to shoot myself.

Do go. Tell them you've already hit your quota for the year.

I'm sure you could develop some kind of fictitious stomach ailment that day, no?

I wish - it would have to be a pretty intense ailment so as to prevent me from riding as a passenger in the car to Montreal the day before. I'm afraid I'm out of aces on this one boys, which is all the harsher 'cause I can't properly congratulate you, Parallax.
Is your new job permanent?

Yep. I haven't gotten the offer yet but I was told it's coming this week unless my references backstab me and I don't think they will. It has a long probation period (6 months) but it is a full-time, permanent job.

I'm hoping to go, unless a project comes in the door that I can't put off.

It does feel a little weird going to a complete stranger's house to see a crowd of people I don't even know.

It only feels weird the first time. Just remember to relax and let it happen. We've all done it before, so we'll support you through the awkward phase.

(Real answer: you should be comfortable in about 10 minutes, once you realize we really are all geeks. :))

Think of it the other way: try to be the person opening their house up to a bunch of strange people they don't even know. Yeah, that'll put you at ease.

Also, what Chumpy said.

Aw crap, I didn't even think of that!

Most of the people at the Ottawa S&T's have known each other for a while now, and we are good people. Nothing to fear.

I should comment: I am NOT in any way worried about the S&T I am hosting on the 23rd. I know a lot of the people already, and yet I am still doing it.

Good news everyone! I'm ridiculously stupid and got my weekends mixed up. Long story short, I will be attending!

Ghostship - don't worry, we're all good people. Plus there's always the option to slowly back out the door and run to your car.

It's always fun when an absence of bad news feels like good news. Glad you sorted that out. The more the merrier!

Booyah! Good to hear you're coming dude. I finally got a copy of ModNation Racers to replace the rental I lost but I'll keep it until then and bring it. It's Mario Kart but more awesome.

I heard a recent podcast covering Ravenloft. Seemed interesting. I used to DnD as a kid. Recently talked about setting up a gaming boys weekend annually to connect with old friends. One guy is kind of clumsy with computers and is very competitive and doesn't like loosing much so were going to tabletop game to keep everyone in top mood. We used to play Axis and Allies, Risk, and they did Shogun (which I'm unfamiliar with). Maybe Ravenloft is an option for that event. I'd be interested in trying it out to see if I want to buy it for that.

I'll bring the wife's laptop, but I'll be dependent on steam, unless I get told what to install ahead of time.
I'll also clean off the table and folding chairs and throw them in the truck, just in case.
