FFXIV: catch all

In beta, I had to run the ffxivconfig.exe file (in the same directory as the main game exe) and setup the controller myself.

Yep, by default the controller is set to off. You will need to go into the config file and turn it on, as well as get the controller key bindings set up. I added a link that shows a default controller binding configuration at the bottom of the page. I started with it and then added and removed to my linking and now I have a setup I enjoy.

Edit: nevermind.

Hey there!

For the few/proud/laggy that will be playing, I am now Heren Shaw on Fabul.

Feel free to send a tell for general goofing off or experimenting with game mechanics.

I've never been into Final Fantasy of any stripe - JRPGs just aren't my thing (despite being into Star Blazers as a kid and collecting the original Akira graphic novels in high school, I just don't like the general aesthetic of androgynous/spiky hair/300 pound swords etc). I passed on FFXI when it came out because people made it sound painful.

However, I was just checking out Keen and Graev's website, and... first the graphics caught my eye, then his description of the game really made it sound quite close to EQ1, which was the most fun I ever had in an MMO to date.

Very tempted to check this out... Will be on work travel next week and I seriously doubt my work computer can handle this game, so may have to wait a week. Couple of questions:

- are you guys all on the same server? (does this even have separate servers?) does it support guilds?
- any problems with level range in regards to grouping? Does it not even matter, or is there some kind of sidekick system, or are you just screwed ala EQ?
- I assume there's a $15/month fee?

I second his questions and add another one:
Is FFXIV region-free, meaning can I play with GWJers all around the globe?

- I think, for the most part, we are all on the Fabul server.
- Grouping with different levels does seem to have an effect, but I'm not sure of the specifics. No side-kick system, but the fact that you can switch between classes that all have their own individual level may help there.
- There abouts.

- All the servers are international (except the Chinese servers.) So on any given server you'll run into players from the US, Europe, or Japan, mostly depending on what time of day you're on.

To answer the fee question it's not like most other MMOs. In this game you pay a flat $9.99 per month and then an additional $3.00 for each char slot you want available. I currently have 2 slots open on my account. Once I decide which toon I want to stay with as a main I might drop down to 1 since you can have multiple classes on each toon.

Eh, decided to dive in. Installed, patched, and set up my character.

Server: Fabul like everyone else here

Character Name: Eom Nomnomnom

Is there any plans on a Link Shell on Fabul with the GWJ folks? If not im going to start looking at random ones.

Has anybody else had a problem with the game not detecting a 360 wireless controller (on the PC version)? While other games detect it and have no problem using it, when I go into the FFXIV Config options, this game just gives me a message of no gamepad detected. I bought the controller just for this game, so I'm pissed at the moment.

I don't know about any specific GWJ linkshell but I am happy to give pearls out if you send me a tell in game. I am trying to stay parked in bazaar mode while I am at work so my character should be online and I can filter back to get the tells (I hope). "Heren Shaw" is the character name.

It's unclear how to best group up at this time and there aren't many or any group storyline quests to follow.

Honestly, now that it runs great for me after a computer upgrade, I can't say I'm at all disappointed in anything thats in the game. I'm just surprised at what ISN'T in the game yet.

I can't imagine how it released without all the side quests and Notorious Monsters and little nooks and crannies that FFXI had pre-Zilart. I know its all getting added, but still....I find it odd.

But true to FFXI form I'm sure we all don't fully know what is there and isn't, nor do we really know what lies ahead or how best to level. Everyone is just running around randomly and killing/crafting/gathering.

Like some in the thread here, I am a long time FFXI vet and while that doesn't mean I know jack about FFXIV, the FFXI players aren't in WTF mode as constantly as a WoW player might be when trying to play this.

Hey all are welcome to join http://righteouschaps.enjin.com It's my current Company that I'm "leading". Get at me in game Devmani Venrische

Have you installed the 360 drivers for your pc? i know windows 7 does this for you but you may want to try that. I haven't had any issues with the 360 controller, I'm using a wireless one btw.

Hmm, seeing that there's no GWJ linkshell/guild, I'd rather skip this one for the sake of the pile or - if I grow weak - Cataclysm (I LOVE Goblins).

I've tried both the drivers that are automatically installed with Windows 7, and I have also tried installing the drivers that you can download from the Microsoft website. It's detected by FF XIV on my friend's computer, but not on mine. Since it works with other games, I'm gonna go ahead and blame FF XIV. I'm at a loss.

I think I'm just gonna have to call it quits on this game... I can't stand the keyboard/mouse setup. Oh well, it's not like I bought the game yet (just using the 30 day buddy pass thing).

Anyone still playing this? I bought last week while on a business trip but it was completely unplayable on my laptop. Installed on my desktop at home and am still trying to figure out what's going on. Latest character (may stick with it for awhile... first couple didn't last long) is one of those half-giant looking dudes, Gladiator, in Ulduar or whatever, named Khoram Svartvarg. I have no idea what I'm doing, but dang the game sure does look purty!

Lupus - So THIS is where you've disappeared to. We miss you on Wednesdays.

I just watched the GameTrailers review of this, and it sounds like it got seriously rushed. I hate the sound of everything being limited (fast-travel, quests, etc.), but I'm curious how much of a problem it would be for someone who wouldn't play very much? I mean, only being able to do 16 total quests is a problem if you're playing every day for multiple hours, but what if that's not the case?

Yeah, afraid this has had its hooks in me recently.

The limit on quests is bit odd, as it is pretty arbitrary, but not horrible if you only play so often. I personally like the fast travel system: sure, there is a limit on how often you can warp around, but you can warp to any other aetheryte site you have been to before in the entire game world, and warping along with a party is free (for everyone but the person actually initiating the warp.)

The game as a whole, though, is simply not finished. Heck, they're still figuring out core parts of the game - i.e. the economy. I imagine their current goal is to hammer out as much as possible ahead of its release on the PS3 next year.

Ah, I see. This is the public beta for the PS3 version, except Square is charging for it. It's all clear now.

That is disappointing to hear, because there was much that sounded very interesting about this game. I'm not going to pay for an unfinished product though, particularly not one that has a $15 a month subscription attached. I hope they get the issues worked out (and perhaps consider trying a free-to-play model, I hear it works pretty well).

Yeah I'm still here, but it is sadly an unfinished game at this point.

The "Leve" limitation is because they are supposed to be occasional things you do. This isn't designed to be a "level by questing" game.

Good xp parties (mostly JP) have already cracked how to realiably get 500SP per kill and levelling can be done in an hour or two at the right camp.

Mostly I'm just goofing with with my character, Heren Shaw, waiting on stuff to get added. I know being an FF game, the time I spend levelling my jobs won't be wasted and I won't cap out for years.

If you want to try stuff out Khoram or Lupus, give me a tell and I'll port over to you and find a job in your level range.

The 1.18 patch has significantly improved all aspects of the game. They are steering it more towards a High Def version of XI, which is what most people probably expected at release and then felt disappointment. I've started a new character and the experience thus far has been drastically different from a year ago.

patch notes: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...

Are you trying to say it's playable now?

This is coming from someone who played FFXIV from day one for over a month.

I will go back to it, especially since I think it's still free to play.

After how awful this game was right before launch, I don't know that there's anything that could get me to play it again.

Squeenix, that foul temptress! I've been clean for years now, the last thing I need is a relapse...

Edit:

Edit 2: i looked at some videos on youtube... the skill animations are so blah. What kept me interested in FFXI was how flashy the weapon skills, spells, and skillchains were. The game has lost my interest again.

Adding to that is there seems to be no global cooldown timer as implemented in other MMOs. I'm mashing hotkeys and the moves execute but the new animation interrupts the current. It's....odd.

I've gotta take back some of my enthusiasm about the state of the game. For a good two nights I had no shortage of things to do while leveling a melee class. Two sets of levequests, 4 or 5 normal quests, 2 chapters of the main story for my home city and some grinding. Now my guildleves are on a 12 hour (!) cooldown, there are no quests to do and I can't advance the story until 7 more levels have been dinged. I could level a craft/gathering class but I just don't want to, so I'm logged out for a day. It's the same wall that I hit last time that made me lose interest but it took a little longer this time around.

I can't help but think that all the effort they put into this game would have been better served updating the graphics for FFXI and making it a bit friendlier(read: possible, but not as good as grouping) towards solo players. The game was *very* solid and well made, despite what I would view as missteps regarding endgame content.

FFXI has steadily improved. I solo/duo'd to the mid 20s on two jobs with a buddy this past winter. The level syncing system is pretty awesome with a few caveats. There's no shortage of content. Even with all that, it's still better with a solid static group of regular players. If a few goodjers wanted to play XI on a regular basis I'd re-up in a second.

I've hemmed and hawed many times about going back to FFXI. What keeps me from doing so, however, are the players who are simple bad at math and stuck into their stereotypes about the "perfect party". Honestly? the perfect party is one that can chainpull and destroy VT monsters at a steady pace. That, and I'm wicked scared of getting sucked in again like I did back at launch.. it was pretty bad.

I came back for few days. Good news, everyone! It is quite playable now. Although still pretty weak, if not very.

I was thinking about going back to FFXI too. I even asked them for my password reset, as I forgot my old one. And it turns out Character Reactivation Service is undergoing maintenance since weeks and they don't even know when they'll fix it. So there you go.
