For those who are going to stick around and play when it launches. If you have the ability and are interested I highly recommend picking up a wired controller. The game feels very solid and is much more intuative once your using a controller. I am using a wried xbox 360 controller. Supposedly there is a way to get a PS3 controller working but getting the correct driver seems to be an issue.

Yea no doubt a controller is the best way to go with this game. Thankfully it was made to be configured to an xbox controller this time around unlike XI (couldn't use the triggers and that bothered me to no end)
Couple more months there'll be a few more games that time will be better spent on. They had their shot and being familiar with SE i doubt they'll do anything this close to release to make me think i should try them again. I'd rather play XI again than go back to XIV.
Open beta isn't the "try before you buy" phase of game development, I can't base my final thoughts on an open beta where nothing is optimized and they even said that the game will be running less then satisfactory due to the apps running and collecting data on how the game is running. I don't think that retail release is gonna be some crazy revision that the game plays different but I feel that a 30-60 day cycle is gonna happen where a lot will get patched and more optimizations will chug down the pipes. This is why I said come back in a little bit to see how things are going.
I have it on pre-order. That said...
1) I plan on playing it with a wired controller.
2) I'll be away for a month on business, so I don't plan on installing it until around Nov. By that time, I hope to see the usual start up bugs and lag hell fixed.
3) Why pre-order now then? Well, the reports from beta haven't freaked me out yet, and I might as well get the goggles if I'm going to plunk down 50 bucks no matter what.
I'm a casual gamer, don't have time for 8 hour raids and crap. I'm lucky to squeeze in a hour or two at night and a few hours on the weekend. So the whole exp degradation scheme works for me.
Re: exp degradation + gunning for 20 hours at a time, etc... I'm surprised I haven't seen the most obvious reason they put that in place.
To curtail farming and leveling services. Put this game mechanic together with the other scheme SE cooked up: China only servers. (That appeases the Chinese gov't, but also curtails farming and leveling)
oh yeah... is there going to be a GWJ guild? If so, which world?
Figaro is where everyone is at in Open Beta, so presumably anyone sticking around will roll over there in Live.
I completely forgot I pre-ordered the collectors edition from Amaozn.com and now since it's being prepared to ship I cannot cancel it. I'm really disappointed from the beta reports I held back from playing it so the experience would be fresh but with other MMOG already out and free (see LOTRO) I don't have patience for frustrating game mechanics and poor control.

Since you have it pre-ordered just save it for when the LOTRO blues hit and by then hopefully it's running smooth so you might like it then.
The game performance improved a lot from CB and as it was patched in OB. Supposedly there was still debugging code in it so the slowdowns were "working as intended".
The problem is the game is boring. You can do 8 "go kill these" and 8 "go craft these" quests every 48hrs then it's up to you to grind. If you gain too much xp in the week then the game holds you back with fatigue...which is the opposite of the generally accepted as phenomenal idea of rested. There are no dungeons as of yet and no instances other than for brief moments within the various parts of the storyline. The story itself won't be completed for the first year according to the devs.
Everyone mentioned the wired controller. Anyone using the wireless controller with the usb dongle/adapter?
I tried, and it seemd to work find... but I couldnt figure out how to "tab" through targets.
I'll be playing on launch, so if Firaga is where its at, i'd love to join a LS with some of the site members.

I used the wireless controller. You use the left and right on the d-pad to change targets.

The only reason I specified "wired" controller is because after playing beta and learning the hard way a wireless xbox 360 with the usb plug attached will not be recognised by the game client. Just trying to save someone else the forum crawling headaches
Yeah, if you have a wireless 360 controller and try to use that USB cable that attaches to it for charging and plug to your PC, the client will not detect it. But you can use one of these USB wireless dongles and it will work just fine. That's what I've been using since FFXI.
Yea, the play and charge kit is not at all the same as a wired controller.
So anyone picking this up this week?
I will actually wait a few months to give it a try. There seemed to be way too many things pending to be implemented and I'm sure the first couple months will be a bit hectic, so I'll wait. It's a game I want to like very much, because I love the world, character art, combat, so I don't want to get frustrated with the game now and rather try it when most of the growing pains are gone.
Does anyone know if the servers are going to be world wide? One of the cool things about FFXI is that I made some friends in Japan by playing the game.

Yea they are world wide which has already created a mess on some servers.
on a side note the game plays much better in retail then it did in open beta.
Leaps and bounds better, or just better? Personally, it'd have to be leaps and bounds better to be playable on my current machine, since an upgrade won't be forthcoming any time soon. I'll probably keep this one in the back of my head, but I'm more likely to start FFXI again than play this sans a trial.

Well the lag is gone for me, hardware mouse is implemented and the controller is pretty smooth right now. It just feels better but then again the server is not jammed packed with people.
I'll be picking this up when the standard version comes out next week.
I take it those who picked up the collectors edition are back on Figaro?

I changed to Fabul as Fig is a crowded mess.

I took your advice and rolled here as well. This server is much better than Figaro.
If Titan is still a server that's where I'll be, otherwise, I'll join you guys in Fabu.

All of the names in Xiv are after Cities this time around.
As always you can find me as Devmani Venrische.
Played a bit tonight with a guest 30 day pass. It seems pretty neat, but I'm going to have to get a gamepad... it's far too annoying to play on keyboard (as I'm sure has been said a thousand times in the thread already).
fabul i guess it is. i'll have to wait until Nov after i get back from a trip. hopefully, most of the initial kinks will have been worked out.
So I broke down and picked up the Collectors Edition last night, and played a bit with a local friend of mine.
I ended up rolling a Mitrha Miqo'te named Enza Siev. Thinking I might main Pugilist, but I'll likely be dabbling in nearly everything at some point.
edit: For those who are already playing: Do we have a Linkshell that we are running or a part of yet?

I got Righteous Chaps, (just need to swipe leadership from a friend as he isn't on as much as me)
I plugged in my Xbox 360 controller to my PC and it's not working with FFXIV. Do I need to configure it before the controller will operate or is it plug and play?
