Master of Orion 1 + 2 on GOG

The Antarans are supposed to be that powerful - kind of like a galactic plague. Gives you some incentive to want to take the fight to their dimension. When you get better, you stop thinking of them as galactic bogeymen and more of an opportunity to get ridiculously advanced tech early on.

I still haven't been able to capture an antaran ship. They slaughter my marines at a ratio of 30-1. And thats WITH maxed out tech.

I think what I'm going to do is built titans with nothing but some tractor beams, troop pods and as many assault shuttles as I can fit. Just drown them in marines and hope for the best.

I turned off the antarans and am doing much better now. I actually feel like it might be a little too easy. I'll probably turn up the difficulty next game.

Antaran marines are exceedingly tough. You'll probably need to kill em with neutron blasters before trying to board.

That is, in fact, the usual way that I capture Antaran vessels. Still not a sure thing by a long shot, but worth the effort. You can make a little more headway if you're Bulrathi, but you'll still need either a LOT of troops and a small Antaran ship, or Neutron Blasters.

I captured 2 Antaran fighters in my current game it wasn't too tough. I used 2 cruisers with 3 tractor beam each and some neutron blasters . I also used battle ship for extra troops . There were 3 originally but i had to kill one ( didn't have enough marines for him anyways).

I tried a bunch of games and I totally failed. The other races kept catching me with my pants down (not enough defenses). In one game I took artifact home which was stupid - my home world was mainly a food generator so I couldn't use it to advance my research.

I did much better this game. The humans decided to play "I spy" so I killed them all. I recently started exterminating the other races because they are getting in the way of my progress.

I found out that in games with 8 other races are just too tough. They trade tech, form alliances and it's hard to keep a low profile. You have to be very defensive and try to keep them "happy".

Death rays also kill crew and are effective for boarding, transporters don't hurt either. I like to capture Anteran ships and scrap them for tech. You can sometimes end up getting everything in conjunction with orion.

Can I just say I'm so glad to hear other people are still playing and loving this game? I have not been able to stay away long since it came out in 93'. I always have a game in progress. Now with dosbox we can do multiplayer with the ipx tunneling feature... so cool.

Oh sure, death rays kill marines too, but I was pretty sure he doesn't have them (since you only get them late game if you conquer Orion or get the tech from someone who has).

Picked this two-fer up for my dad this evening. Last minute birthday gift. The old codger turned 56, and never in my own 31 years have I seen him more disappointed than the day he brought home a new computer that couldn't run Masters of Orion anymore.

The second most disappointed I've ever seen him was when he brought home Masters of Orion 2. Not that MOO2 was a bad game. It just wasn't the original.

I hope he never brought home MOO3. From what I've heard, if he had he'd be lucky to still be with us. :p

Oh. I stand corrected, General Crespin. It WAS #3 that messed things up for him. I remember now.

If that's the case, it WAS that it was a bad game.

I loved MOO1, but there were serious balance issues in the late-game that were never fixed. MOO2 was a better game all around ... and there haven't been any others in the series to my knowledge. *wink*

It never happened, guys. MOO3 never happened! *sobs*

*eyes glaze over* What is this MOO3 you all keep mentioning?

"It was much better than Cats, I will see it again and again."

I actually liked MOO3.

I can't remember what we found? Does that test prove that you're an alien or a robot?

We found a person who likes MOO3. I have a theory that no matter how awful something is, someone somewhere likes it. That theory had held up with the exception of MoO3 of which I'd never encountered someone who claimed to like it.

I think you're suppose to throw TAOS in a river... Floats = alien, sinks = robot. I think that's how it works.

Don't forget to burn him if he lives, the heretic.

I remember being so excited about MOO3 and picking it up on release day from Gamestop and then coming home and being utterly confused for like the next 12 hours. Then it actually started to click for me and I started a new campaign and was really digging it. Then I looked online to see all of the awesome reviews and pretty much every other human being on the planet was peeing on their copy then setting it on fire.

I've held this dark secret for many a long year. Even after I moved and lost my copy of the game it was my secret shame...my forbidden love.

I must now come clean...it gets even worse folks.

I bought a digital copy.

Yes...I think I may be the only person in the world who bought MOO3......twice.

I thought MOO3 patched up wasn't bad. It still wasn't good, but it was playable.
