Civilization V Catch-All

Civ IV wasn't too bad with the vastly out-teched units still succeeding in battle was it?

They mostly fixed this, but some of the later combat did still get somewhat ridiculous, needing a giant death stack to take a city. Even though you should have been okay as far as the math went, the rolls still tended to come down on the side of the defender an alarming number of times.

My $20 Halo credit went through today, so I put in my Amazon order. No, I don't need a physical copy, but I'll take one for $20 off. Release day delivery means I'll most likely be playing just as early as with a digital copy. Woo.

Preloading! Hold me!

Alright. I'll bite. Aussie price is $80US, so who's going to step up and gift a copy in exchange for a paypal donation?

Those +X% City Defense bonuses make a real difference.

But no, I never saw the infamous "spearman kills a tank" situation.

Yeah, the %bonuses are calculated in such a way that it really benefits the weaker party more than it would the stronger party, but I thought that was a reasonable mechanic at play (see Vietnam for instance). As long as it isn't ridiculous.

Damn, I wont buy this game right now simply because I am not tired of Starcraft 2. There is no way I have enough free time to play both!

Well, if Civ V is taking out your job, then you can simply sacrifice your social life for SC2. Or sleeping. Cut out sleeping. That works, too.

This is my situation as well and I just picked up Halo too! I was kind of hoping Amazon would offer a discount or credit coupon to make the decision a little easier.....

Who am I kidding, I'm sure I will have it pre-ordered by the end of the week.

I'm trying to make a point to finally finish off the SC2 Campaign before next Tuesday. I will still be playing SC2 multiplayer, but I need to finish that campaign off now before Civ V drops.

Last week I mentioned something to my girlfriend about it only being 2 weeks until V comes out. She goes, "Why, what will happen then." I had to choose my words wisely and I said, "I'm going to want to play it a lot." What I should have said is "Perhaps you won't see me for 2 weeks because of this game."

Can't wait!

Okay. I broke down last night and preordered from Amazon as well. The -£5.00 difference between its price (24.99) and Steam's (29.99) was enough to justify the physical media.

I broke down, too, watching the second part of the live feed. I purchased from D2D, who are also letting you pre-load on Steam now. Went with D2D because they were $.04 cheaper than Steam and I only had $49.98 in my Paypal account.

This was a no brainer for me. Played Civ 1 and on..so many games so little time...

What strikes me as good sign while watching the live feed is how the dude playing obviously likes playing the game. Who knows how long he's been working on the game, but he still looks like he enjoys it. Moreover, it's deep enough that the bearded dude can suggest alternative strategies that the guy playing didn't think of -- there's no set way to win. Definitely starting to look forward to this. Preload is downloaded and ready to go.

It's £5 cheaper from Amazon than from Steam. Have now ordered a pretty, but useless, box to go next to the boxes for Civilization III and Civilization IV.

Very glad it's a Steamworks game. No DVD required! Even though I now own said DVD.

My only concern about the game stems from the fact they've simplified the tech tree; I wonder where else they may also have oversimplified things with the intention of streamlining them. However, the fact they've completely removed tech trading may balance out the tech tree change.

Just show her the trailer, and then point out that it's so funny because it's so true.

We really are going to need a CivAnon around here, aren't we.

Yeah, but everyone will be to busy playing to go to any meetings.

f*cking filthy enablers.

I'm hoping the demo works fine on my computer because I'm worried I can't run it. However, I will take over Breander's computer to play if mine doesn't run it.

This may not end well!

Finally got around to pre-loading. SOOO looking forward to Civ V.

Thoughts so far on the streaming video:

I am pretty disappointed that you can't choose where your city expands. I just can't trust that the AI will do that right all the time. What if there are two resources and the AI picks the wrong one?

You can buy specific tiles to expand your city/influence.

Oh the money is to buy them early? I thought that they unlocked after 30 culture, and then you needed to pay money to actually pull the trigger. That's all better then, the populace organically grows in the direction they want, and a government push to accelerate or change this costs money, perfectly fine.

Also, the interface will show you where the next expansion will occur before it happens, so you'll know if you need to purchase your desired hex and not the one that the AI has chosen.

So what's the word on the preorder bonuses? I'm not allowed to buy another game until I finish Season 3 of Sam and Max.
Should I hurry?

The zeitgeist seems to be that the pre-order bonuses will eventually be paid DLC, which has already been alluded to in other pre-order offers. Though I really do not know how Firaxis is going to convince us that we should pay for a Civilization that has been in since the first Civ (Babylonians). Map packs, sure--and I could see them releasing as DLC something that would be similar to expansion packs that have been released for previous versions, but I'm still not thrilled about what they are doing with the Digital Deluxe Edition for Steam.

But I'm pretty sure that I've Tannenhausered myself at least 4-5 times in this post.

Right, but how much gameplay potential would I lose out if I have just the vanilla game (MAYBE the deluxe). What kind of value is in that DLC?
See, right now I'm trying to psych myself out of buying this day one. Why? Because I won't have time to really play it until a couple weeks later. Maybe I missed the details, but I guess I'm not entirely sure what is contained in this... Mesopotamia/Asia/pick your retailer pre-order bonus.

Any interest in me setting up a Civ V competition? I'm thinking something along the lines of:

- one game / month
- game is a save game in turn 1, so set civ, difficulty, options, map etc.
- preferred victory condition gives bonus to score

If there's interest, I'll start a new thread.

I hope to jump into a multiplayer game, probably the weekend of the 24th. Everyone will have practically no time to learn some optimal build order, so we will all be fumbling around. I will make a thread sometime next week, and take people in the order that they express interest - I was thinking something along the lines of simultaneous turns normal speed, starting around 12 noon EST on Saturday the 25th.

Sounds good, though I'll be unable to join. I was thinking something more asynchronous.
