Minecraft Multiplayer: GWJ World

"What you know" authentication is never as good as "who you are" authentication.

Sure. But I don't like the idea of a GWJer having to wait for someone to whitelist them in order to join the server. Approval processes always seem really draconian to me, and I get irritated at having to wait.

Another thing I could do is make default users completely powerless but able to join the server. Then some people can be mods that are empowered with the ability to "promote" that person to a rank with standard rights.

This seems like a better idea, as long as there are enough mods that there's always one around. Although it does raise the issue of what to do with pubs who join and then ask for access - do we turn them away, or supervise them, or what?

I've been thinking it'd be useful to have an IRC channel for Minecraft GWJers - a couple of times lately I've wanted to get hold of people to ask a question but didn't have a way of contacting them directly.

It really boils down that currently the main cause of any trouble is the summoning. Once that's off (again, probably this Friday) then stealing supplies is about the largest method of griefing. As of yet we haven't really had a case of straight-up maliciousness, so I don't think we have to worry much about theft.

Not really. If I were dead set on griefing someone, it'd take me less than an hour to go from an empty inventory to having at least one bucket of lava to ruin peoples' days with.

Well yeah, that would fall into the very deliberate maliciousness rather than just repercussions of the ill-thought "Hey, I'm gonna summon up a crap-ton of TNT and blow some sh*t up!"

But the repercussions of "Hey, I'm gonna summon up a crap-ton of TNT and blow some sh*t up!" - or, indeed "Hey, I'm going to muck around with this lava flow" - can be just as bad as straight-up maliciousness. Never underestimate the destructive power of idiots (or to put it nicely, newbies, or even simply those who are used to a different set of rules).

Yes, but my point is that when summoning is off muckery is going to require deliberate effort, not just accidents resulting from people playing in a sandbox and acting accordingly. I've got no problem coming down with a banhammer if people are purposely causing issues.

I'm sorry guys, I started building the dark tower (The Eye of Suaron, or possibly the Second Eye of Sauron) and I hit the ceiling much faster than I thought I would. Shortly thereafter I crashed. So there is a obsidian tower randomly placed on the map.

Fair do's.

Back to storehouse design ramblings, a picture of the "new and improved" Storehouse 2.0:

No idea why this didn't occur to me the first time around. It's nicer looking, space-efficient, and much quicker to build. Also, I've run through the id list and we can store practically everything in the game in 64 large chests. This requires only a 12x19 space (or 12x15 if we're prepared to have aisles one block wide rather than two).

Plan view of an everything-storehouse:

Black is walls, orange is chests. There's even some room for expansion / railways / canals either side. I totally think this is the way to go.

WHO BLEW UP ALL MY STUFF!

I log in this afternoon and find that all my stuff up around Lake Hali has been blown up. Island with lava fountain/altar? Now a crater. Tunnel behind the giant statue? Now a crater. Cottage with a large item stockpile outside? Now a crater.

Someone has also dug a hole into the back of the statue. I suspect it is packed with TNT too but didn't look.

Come on folks, I'm way up at the top of the map, miles away from anyone. I'm not intruding on anyone's space. What the hell did I do to piss someone off?!

Edit: I logged back in and checked the statue. Someone built a dirt column behind it to reach the body, knocked a hole in it and went inside. There's another dirt column inside and a couple of torches but no TNT.

VP's house was DEFINITELY destroyed with purpose. There was TnT directly where the inside would be still under the water there. That was no accident.

O.K. things are really starting to get f*cked up. I think we may need to lock the server down.
And here we were thinking that everybody could maintain a mild level of maturity!

Doesn't sound like something a GWJ member would do.

Very uncool.

I would hope not, that's serious griefing.

I'd be willing to bet a large amount of cash on the culprit not being one of us. We've been getting a few pubs on the server lately; chances are it was one of them.

My thoughts exactly.

It's likely someone who found the server thread in the GWJ forums and is seeing what kind of reaction they can get. User levels are going to be a mandatory thing, IMO.

That was a concern when I started this thread. Before it was obfuscated in the main Minecraft thread but now it's a lot more obvious.

We need whitelisting. Hate to say it, but as long as the server address is in a public post, any random dick can join the server and f*ck with things.

I second whitelisting, or restrictions on new players that disallow them affecting the world.

I think whitelisting is probably the way to go.... even in a no-summoning world.

LM, do you have a log of who has logged on/off with any timestamps?

PAR

I'd rather people not be able to do anything on connect and have powers granted to them by a mod once we've established who we are, for the reasons I outlined earlier.

AlexDGT. We're father/son.

He's not old enough to have a job yet. Right now, he's still just a Gamer.

Aww, I'm not on there.

Soulless001 is a friend - and I think roommate - of DF7's.

Edited post.

I haven't actually tried to do anything up there, so tourist rights are just fine with me for now. Whenever you have a shot, I'd appreciate it if you could add me, though.

Well tonight was fun sorry about the randoms lava and waterfall

Assuming it's momgamer, done.

I finally got the blacklist working, bedrock is no longer allowed. By popular request I've gone ahead and also blacklisted TNT and both lavas. We can have them back for the End of the World event prior to the switch to the full-on survival world.

Yeah, KayTeeEm is me, thanks!

How come Floomi's line has a :null: instead of :: at the end of it?

Turrash is me. Please give me access to build my stuffs
