Minecraft Multiplayer: GWJ World

To whoever is the owner of the glass pyramid surrounding a small lava fountain near the bottom of no_diving: I invited a friend of mine onto the server who thought it'd be funny to put a block of TNT next to the lava and see what happened.

Thankfully the lava flow wasn't destroyed. I've filled the crater with grass and repaired the glass casing to the best of my memory; it's probably not right, but I think it's close.

Sorry on behalf of my friend. He's had a good talking to and I won't be inviting him back.

Well never is just weird. Maybe it wasn't at full ripeness?

I'd really rather the server be GWJ-only. Generally Friend of GWJ is fine, but when Friend of GWJ tells Friend of Friend of GWJ there are problems as FoFoG is far enough removed to be an absolute asshat.

I am kinda expecting/hoping that when proper multiplayer is implemented we'd have 2 or 3 different servers:

1) Free building with spawning and teleporting, no enemies, invulnerable players

2) The normal game with enemies, damage, and nothing special in the way of mods

3) A PVP server (maybe?) where there are enemies and 2 camps of players, assuming proper mods are available to make it work

My big project that I've spent the last few days on is finished. Par requesting something... large to fill the chasm he created. Not going to tell you what it is, someone should recognize it.

The full exterior, about 120 blocks tall.

The dome garden on top with access hatch.

I'm really happy with how the double helix support turned out.

The interior is accessible, but a little barren. Looks neat though!

This is probably a silly question, but I haven't played around with the game very much yet. How do you build something that big? Lots of scaffolding and temporary piles of dirt to climb on?

Does it launch?

That's generally how I do it. In multiplayer, you don't ever take damage so you don't have to worry about falling to your death either.

It would be possible, though a lot of extra time spent on planning, building, and demolishing the scaffolding. But I used a flying mod to build the entire thing from the top downward. I did have to place dirt stacks just to keep everything oriented correctly, and I used temporary scaffolds for complicated parts (but I didn't have to build stairs which was a huge help).

Have to build over 300 of them.

Nice Bob, got it in one with Quintin.

I managed to wall in my home once, and got trapped in an endless "you're dead" loop until I warped out to the spawn point.

I'll have to search out a flying mod and plan something large.

The server's acting funny tonight.

Funny how? What's funny about it?

Funny like a clown?

I'd place a bunch of blocks, then after a second they'd disappear. Seemed like some kind of lag or desynchronization issue between client/server.

I've had that a few times. I usually log out and back in to fix it. I often see myself standing there when I come back, it's quite disconcerting, but the problem is usually fixed.

The flying mod is described up-thread. The mod itself is here. Unzip it to your .minecraft directory (In the various Windows flavors it is in the user directory under AppData/roaming; not sure about other OSes) Launch using the flyer.jar file (and be prepared to crash with "Illegal Stance" a lot).

And the no damage from falling in multiplayer is a bug, I think related to the fact that animals are almost impossible to kill. Expected it to be patched out with some Friday update.

Maybe I would actually finish my Space Invader armada if I could fly...And if the sky were a little higher, or the ground was a little lower.

Ah, so that was you.
I was a little frightened when I saw a space invader flying right around my house. Especially with the ominous brick diamond that appeared with it.

The diamond was supposed to be a heart, to declare my love for you. It didn't quite work out as planned, and I intended to get rid of it, but haven't been home to log on lately. The Invader does intend to kill you and everyone you care about, but there's not much I can do about it.

Perfectly understandable. I'll make some bunkers and get a cannon.
hm... now that I think of it I may actually build some bunkers and a cannon under them...

From momgamer's article and the various word of mouth over the last week I feel I'm on the cusp of checking this "game/environment/lifestyle choice" out for myself. The sheer immensity that is this GWJer world I'm seeing is reason enough to visit. I'm just afraid I might never get out. We'll see what happens.

Well I scummed to the non existant peer pressure and bought it last night, I sense the potential is huge in this game.

I just spent the night digging about and making and oversize stair case, as crap as that is compared to what the others have done it's a buzz to see it on the map.

Is there a convention for marking out a plot of land you want to use?

Pretty much just start building; the convention is that if there is something there that someone else built to leave it alone but that is about it. If you want to mark an area for future development then scatter torches through it; that at least indicates that someone has been there and wants to do something. In general, if you follow the rule of "don't be a dick" then you'll be fine.

A few things to be aware of:

1) Be careful with lava
2) BE CAREFUL WITH LAVA
3) Seriously, the stuff can spread and set half a continent on fire in nothing flat
4) If you decide to ignore rules 1-3, contain the lava and put out the fires before you log off
5) There is a request to keep lava off of Kirbyland (the continent to the north and west of the spawn) entirely.

Water can spread and get out of hand too, but nothing like lava.

Other than that, just poke around and have fun.

I have a potentially inflamatory question: What's so special about Kirbyland? When I was there, it just seemed like a forest. I mean, I didn't see this guy: IMAGE(http://gameinformer.com/cfs-filesystemfile.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.43.94.18.Attached+Files/8863.Kirbys_5F00_Dream_5F00_Land_5F00_GBC_5F00_ScreenShot2.jpg)

Yeah, and I went to Yellowstone a little while back and there was just a bunch of trees and bears and sh*t. What a rip off.

Do you guys play through the browser or do you download the game?

@xnotch Thanks for the update man Can we expect working mob spawning & damage on alpha servers? Cos that would just be the best evar <3
@ProPuke The damage isn't coming just yet

Read that as you will. Mobs without damage will be less interesting. I guess he wants health to be server-side? I can't see why else it was broken.

@Waltz: Download.

Unless you're comparing Fedora to God or complex geological and evolutionary processes, I'm afraid I don't quite follow you

that said, I take back any snark in my previous comment. On closer inspection, that's more saplings than I'd like to count (read; that took some doing). Still, tree dude would make an excellent addition to Kirby land.
