NFL 2010 Draft + Offseason Thread (also, humiliation!)

Montario Hardesty is done for the season. For a guy who is constantly injured this isn't a shocker, but I was really hoping to see what he could do if he could healthy.

At least they got Peyton Hillis from the Broncos who ran well for them before Shanny was fired, so at least they have a bruiser to compliment Jerome Harrison.

Edit: Looks like the Chargers picked up Patrick Crayton for a Seventh Round pick. Not bad.

Well bravo to Minase who correctly predicted that Mike Williams(SEA) would be valuable eventually in our Keeper league. News out of Seattle is that they're going to cut or trade TJ Houshmandzadeh and put Williams in the starting role. The guy has looked great in preseason and there was a reason he was a Round 1 pick but still, TJ has shown us so much whining it feels like we should keep him.

I suppose this shows us the value of having Pete Carrol as an NFL coach. He can salvage some USC players that didn't live up to their hype, not all though(see Lendale White).

LenDale White's Achilles asploded, he's out for the year.

Did gravy fly out everywhere?

Matt Leinart to be cut. Biggest disappointment of all time? There's still JaMarcus Russell to consider in that category, who while not having exactly the same level of college pedigree that Leinart did was the number one overall pick when he was drafted by Oakland. On the other hand, Russell was a failure in a failed system whereas Leinart spent a few years within a successful system even though it was on the bench.

Michael Clayton, the recipient of possibly the most inexplicable contract extension in league history last year, has been but. HA!

Being a #10 overall pick versus a #1 (Russell) or #2 (Leaf) helps him.

It's the same reason nobody brings up Dan McGwire anymore. McGwire was way less productive than Russell or Leaf (745 career passing yards. Career. Leaf has ~3600 and Russell has ~4000). But McGwire was a #16 overall pick instead of #1 or #2.

Leinart has 3900 passing yards so he produced a lot more than McGwire too. Plus Leinart will eventually rebound into a Detmer-like career backup.

Yeah, that was a stupid move.

But so was Denver's move to trade away a 1st round draft pick (from this year) to move up in the second round last year to take Alphonso Smith. Well, Smith just got traded to the Lions for TE Dan Gronkowski who had (drum roll) one reception in his rookie season. So, for a Seventh Round TE the Broncos gave up a first round draft pick and used a second round pick in last year's draft. Wow.

I live in Colorado, but I'm not really a Broncos fan, but I can't stand McDaniels so this makes me happy to see that he and Xanders were in fact morons.

Is it just me or do a lot of the names being cut today besides Leinart seem more...recognizable?

It's all about the money, team's don't want to pay experienced players. Did you watch Hard Knocks this week? The Jets GM was saying they only have a single non-starter that makes more than their allowed minimum. I was surprised by that.

I definitely felt the same way when I was reading through the lists.

Glad Clayton is gone, not a bad guy but just could not catch the ball for the money he was making.

Leinart, I don't know has he really had a chance to show his potential? He lost the starting job to a potential HOF and a League MVP. I think if he gets some starts somewhere else and doesn't do well then call him a bust. If Anderson does bad for any reason they will probably roast the coach.

I am not a Derek Anderson fan, but he at least has shown he is capable of putting up numbers in the NFL. Leinart ......... meh.

My thinking is that with the looming work stoppage (be it from a player strike or owner lockout), teams don't want to have high-paid players who yield zero returns on the field on their roster. For all anyone knows, if and when a new CBA is agreed upon, it could be a lot harder to ditch said players, hence the desire to cut them now in favor of other players rather than wait to see if they can work past their slumps. Basically, if you don't perform, you're gone. Zero tolerance.

A lot of young players have been released too, but many of them are destined to practice squads after they clear waivers.

Oh good, Al Davis is still in charge of the Raiders. I was worried there for a minute.

Ravens pick up Houshmasnjbfdnnaszadeh. Oh, and they only have to pay him $855,000 since the Seahawks gave him $7 mil already. I like the receiving core, but let's hope they get some young guys in next year's draft.

Edit: And some guy named Revis ended his holdout.

Wow. The rich get richer.

The NFL Network has announced that Joe Theismann is joining the broadcast booth for Thursday night games. Is it too late for me to call up DirecTV and beg them to stop carrying the network?

Who would hire Theismann? He's atrocious. He's beyond atrocious. If there's a hell, it's going to involve me watching constant repeats of last year's Buffalo-Cleveland game where the broadcasters are Theismann and Dan Dierdorf.

You're not alone in the haterade department. (NSFW, but then again, who's at work today, anyway?)

Edit: A little dated, but still funny...

From Yahoo sports --

Dixon starting for Steelers
Leinart signs with Texans
Big Ben no longer Steeler captain

Agreed. He is beyond the worst. Thankfully there aren't that many Thursday night games so it's not like I have to be subjected to him every week like when he was on MNF.

The really scary thing is Matt Millen is the second least-respected person in that broadcast booth.

Stick a fork in this thread, because she's done.
