Vanquish - A Shinji Mikami joint.

Frenetic third person shooter, highly stylized futuristic setting, smoking cigarettes while inside of a mechanical armor suit. Sounds good to me.

E3 Trailer

The demo is now out on XBL.

The game handles fast and loose. The camera sensitivity was too high for me, I lowered it from 50 to 30. Some of the systems are quirky, and for a good portion of the demo I wasn't quite sure I was doing it right, but it sorta clicked after I ran out of ammo on my first attempt against the boss. The game is pretty Japanese and hence will have a limited audience here. Mechanically it feels like the Bayonetta of third person shooters, but it takes itself a bit more seriously. As someone said below me, if the game is reviewed as being meaty enough I'll probably pick it up. I have a very soft spot for mechanically sound Japanese games, and this game seems to have the third person shooter down pretty well.

If I were to describe it using other games as touchstones I'd say it's Gears of War with a bit of Crackdown and Lost Planet. Some bullet hell thrown in for kicks, too.

The game's set for an October 19th release. I wonder if such an early demo is a good idea or not.

I,I "We will (fist pump) stop that from happening."

Weirdly, watching that video makes me want to play Too Human

The demo is out today? I might have to give it a look see. The frantic pace of it certainly makes it seem interesting. One of the few titles from E3 that made me raise an eyebrow.

It is. I've set it to DL whilst I take my nightly bike jaunt.

I have to say, the emphasis on "score" after the mission makes me wonder if that's supposed to be the replay value. Works for some people, but I'm not usually one of them. Usually. Who knows, maybe it's a 15 hour game.

Forgot to mention, I'm pretty impressed with the main character's animations. It's all smooth, but in particular throwing a grenade while moving is good looking. He kinda jumps and tosses it athletically, looking like a shortstop in baseball making a tough throw to first. It made sense when I read the character bios and found that he'd previously been a star athlete.

*forcing the PS3 to ship faster with my mind*

This is a crazy assed Japanese styled shooter alright. Bad acting and all.

Like the speed. Maybe a pickup when the price drops. Can't see paying full on retail for this.

When you're in cover there's a goddamn smoke button! Existence = Justified.

I'm not sure if it adds much to a world of Gears and Uncharted except for its profound profound Japanese-ness, transforming mecha and all, but it was pretty insane and fun. I don't think I'll pick it up right away, but if I do end up ditching ye ole 360 before Gears 3, I'll likely snag this then.

I liked the demo but didn't like the way it just threw you in without telling you what the controls were.

Not only is their a smoke button but enemies will actually shoot at your cigarette when you toss it so you can use it as a distraction or missile bait.

This scratches an itch I didn't know I had, I really dug the demo.

There is a tutorial.

This was game of the show at E3 for me, so definitely checking out the demo.

I really enjoyed the demo. Definitely keeping tabs on this one now.

I have done some Too Human co-op in quite a while...

The demo was amazing. Gears of War meets Bayonetta with a little bit of Metal Gear Solid on the side. Count me in. Something about sliding around feels so right. And something about sliding toward a robot, doing a rising punch, going slow-mo and machine gunning down other robots in the face is just too sweet.

I definitely recommend anyone who plays the demo to do the tutorial first. Part of the fun is how you play so you'll wanna know how to be as slick as possible.

Yeah I played through the tutorial first, which really helps make the demo a lot more fun. One of those first big mecha suits, I just ran up and punched the sh*t out of one til it exploded. I was so freaking happy. The boost move is just amazing. And if you do the dodge move and aim, it slows down time, it's called forced AR, and it's awesome. After playing the demo, this game is a Day 1 purchase for me, I am so sold.

The trailer reminds me a bit of metal wolf chaos, except not quite as cheesy.

Demo was interesting. The look of the game is certainly slick. However the characters and interactions between them reminded me way too much of Metal Gear, I really just can't stand this type of japano-cheese any more. The gunplay seemed solid enough, but everything was just a tad too frantic for my tastes I think (I didn't like Bayonetta for this same reason, though that was more extreme). Maybe I'm just getting old but lately I just prefer slower paced, more deliberate action. Passing on this one, though I can see it's a quality title, just not really my style.

Aw damn. You just depressed me because there's a game that will never get a sequel (not that it was released in America anyway. God, so awesome).

This sounds great, it previewed well in the local gaming magazine, so I'm definitely keeping an eye out.

Gutted that they couldn't get the demo out in Europe today!

Not sure what you mean. That's my interpretation of their gun switching verbal sound effects a bit of the way into the video.

I think he means a WOP Dago, as in slur against Italians.

I always thought it was funny sounding myself and occasionally refer to myself as a WOP.

Maybe I should have used wahop? whaop? Can't easily the sound, but it was a funny bit to me.

If I could get that sound inserted every weapon change, it would be a day one purchase.

The Giant Bomb video has at least gotten me interested enough to try the demo out.

Vid looks crazy, my kind of crazy though. Downloading the demo, hoping for greatness.

That demo is pretty amazing. It's like Gears, but faster and Japanese.

One would think it would take a while to get used to controlling Vanquish. I've only had my PS3 for a day and Vanquish was surprisingly easy to understand (played the tutorials). The only thing I had to get used to was limiting how often I could engage in close combat. Slide + melee is an instant overheat. I could understand melee costing a certain amount of boost so that some variety is maintained, but I really can't see why they'd discourage one of my favorite things in games. Oh, well. Demo was still very fun, and the quality of the game in general was very impressive.
