Worms: Reloaded is coming to Steam. Pre-orders are underway and the Steam Group is already accepting members. Get your ninja ropes ready and let the (accidentally self) cluster-bombing begin!

Legendary series makes long-awaited 2D return to PC

From humble beginnings, the original Worms titles took PC gaming to new levels of popularity and mass appeal. Selling in excess of 25 million copies over its 15 year lifespan, Worms has taken its wholly unique brand of addictive gameplay, hilarious humour and wild weaponry across almost every console possible, and on Thursday 26th August 2010 it will be returning to the format that made it most successful; the personal computer.

“Worms Reloaded has been a labour of love for the team given the legacy of 2D PC Worms titles such as Worms 2, Worms Armageddon etc. It has been almost 10 years since the last 2D game was released on personal computers”, said Martyn Brown, iconic figure in the world of Worms and Business Development Director at Team17. “In bringing Worms Reloaded to PC, we’ve reintroduced so much of what gamers loved about the good old days, and it’s fitting that it is also the first Worms game we’ve self-published since the early games. We are very much looking forward to supporting the game through the community on Steam as well as our own Facebook page.”

I'm looking forward to this. I remember when I was in high school a friend had Worms on PC. We would make teams, name them after members of our favourite bands and then kick each other's asses.

Good times.

Three friends and I pre-ordered it with the four pack. This looks to be the best worms game since Armageddon (I hope).

I remember in 2001 when Worms was being criticized for not adding anything significant to the series with each release. It's almost 10 years later, and they're still remaking Worms 2.

I mean, come on Team 17, this is a rich, untapped genre, and you're the kings of it. There's so much you could be doing with this game. You've had ten years to think about this, time enough to come up with a laundry list of revolutionary new features. And what is your big new feature to set this apart from every other Worms game?

... Hats.

Well, when they went 3D it was pretty much panned. How can you innovate when your limitation is a squad-based, 2D strategy using worms and wacky weapons?

Sometimes people just want what they want, me I want exactly what this seems to be.

I loved Worms Armageddon, but I hope this version is a bit more polished than the XBLA version they released some time ago. With every re-release I get the feeling Team17 doesn't even love their game anymore.

Much as I adore Worms Armageddon, I'm going to wait for reviews to purchase this, and maybe even for a holiday Steam sale. Team 17 is just too inconsistent.

How can you innovate when your limitation is a 2D platformer using a plumber who jumps and eats mushrooms?

I can think of dozens of ways to try to innovate and refresh the franchise without going 3D. I even worked on a game that did it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X16yU...). I'm just tired of seeing them not even trying.

You clearly underestimate the power of hats.

By making it 3D, and dressing Mario in a bee costume? While re-releasing the same game over and over again on hand held platforms?

Game looks cool.

I'm not saying there are not ways to innovate, but this is a bit like the whole Starcraft debate, sometimes you want a game to be what you expect. Innovation can alienate your actual audience.

I don't even look at a game anymore unless it has hats.

The Stan worm on the Steam group logo is goddam unnerving.
Looking forward to some mayhem though.

Looking at their site, Team17 left innovation behind a while ago. They now seem focused on getting their 2 games on every platform possible, which I suppose is a different type of innovation. With the recent mass redundancies in the games industry, I suppose it's a good thing a company has found a little niche for themselves.

I could care less about innovation (although some new weapons would be nice), but I want it to be polished damnit. Worms on XBLA was a bit rough around the edges, and that's unforgivable for a game this old.

Gosh, and this is after I tried to make it less unnerving. Before. After.

When eating mushrooms is involved, the sky is the limit. If the Worms ate some mushrooms, the game would be bigger than WoW.

Group invite please

Yeah I need a group invite as well.

Invites sent.

I'm just talking about the 2D games. Every Mario game is different from one another, sometimes in drastic ways, and explores ideas that no other game in the series does. The difference between Super Mario Bros and Super Mario World is hugely substantial.

Yes, they re-release their games on different platforms, but unlike Team 17, they don't call them sequels.

I was over in the "The Week Ahead" thread for this week, and I was disappointed at the lack of Worms discussion/excitement. This thread warms my heart. Even though I'm not expecting much new from this iteration of the series, just the boon that Steam will give to its match-making abilities, I'm super pumped.

And yeah, group invite please.

Could I also get a group invite please?

I'll probably buy it before friday, but won't be able to play until next week.

group invite will be greatly appreciated.
(steam id in sig).

Gosh, and this is after I tried to make it less unnerving. Before. After.

My bad. Didn't realize it would burrow into so many brains.

Group invites should be current.

Got in on a 4-pack deal with Mytch, Mrs Mytch and Hyetal. Looking forward to this.

So does this unlock Wednesday for those of use who preordered?

It would appear so. I would play tomorrow, but my temporary living space has been having serious Internet issues.

So, what is this game all about? I just went in on a 4-pack without having ever played Worms mainly because of the tf2 hats. To quote myself from further up the thread:

Oh, can I get an invite to the steam group?

For real?

Well, it's a 2D, turn-based, squad strategy game. Your 4 dudes are worms and you use bizarre weapons like banana bombs and exploding sheep.

*edit*

And invited.

Acc'd to the countdown on Steam its 11am on Thursday, CST.

This may have been mentioned in the TF2 thread, but I don't go there anymore *shudder*

The fine folks over at Team 17 are about to release Worms Reloaded this week. Being massive fans of their work, all the way back to the original Alien Breed, we thought it'd be fun to do something with them. So, we approached them and politely asked if we could include an iconic element of their game in TF2. The conversation was going swimmingly until they said that the best item to use would be the Holy Hand Grenade. We shuffled our feet and nervously explained that some soon-to-be-fired idiot had removed all of TF2's grenades.

But luckily, we were saved by our own shoddy workmanship. While we removed grenades from the game during early development, we left two of them dangling on the front of the Soldier as a teasing reminder of what once was. So, to celebrate the release, we're going to give a nifty Soldier visual update to anyone who buys Worms Reloaded before Thursday, September 2nd, allowing him to sport two Holy Hand Grenades and a new Soldier helmet. Here's what it looks like in-game:
