Catherine Q*bert-All

Information about the forthcoming adult-oriented action/adventure/horror/anime game from Atlus' internal studio (the Persona people) has been appearing around the internet the last day or so, including this nifty (NSFW) trailer that includes sex, crime scene investigation, and anthropomorphic sheep. It is called Catherine, but beyond that I am at a loss for descriptive language.

Giant Bomb has a quicklook of the Japanese demo up.

English localization coming Summer 2011!

Longer, English quicklook!

The English demo is available as of July 12 on XBL/PSN!

Yeah, interesting for sure.

I recognize some of those poses from the Persona games. They used them whenever they wanted a persona to embody the desperate sexuality of a woman who thinks her only redeeming trait is her body (not a specific woman, usually, mind you).

I don't know, so far this looks to me like a high-brow Japanese version of, "Look! Tits!" I'd rather have a real Persona game in HD.

Why sheep people.....?

You're a pretty persuasive salesman, Lobster - that sounds exactly like something I'd be interested in!

Woo! Oogaba!

That said, any details on gameplay or story yet or is this basically just trying to sell a game on titillation factor alone?

I'm just happy it's

A) not another version of Persona 3

B) Atlus finally deciding to do something for current gen consoles.

Wow Lobster, you need a catch-all for "Look! Tits!" on the Kinect.

I can already see the achievement for the clockwise/counterclockwise wiggle.

edit: Wait, I see a whol new world of rhythm games opening up! "My First Poledance" will feature a pole peripheral with a sensor to determine the players height on the pole. If you get a high enough score you go into the "Makin' It Rain!" bonus round where you have to bend over and pick up dollar bills from the ground whilst wearing 6 inch heels.

Appears you're a {transphobic slur} fighting sheepmen, no less. I hope this takes off like zombies. I can't wait for people to say "I've got {transphobic slur} Fighting Sheepmen fatigue. It's such a cliche at this point."

Never said it was a bad thing! As for TAOS's Kinect boobs, I think I'd prefer to wait for force feedback to make a comeback.

As for the story, I'm... guessing it'll be about a formerly normal person who is awakened to a dark world of demons of which the rest of the world is unaware despite their clear and significant impact?

You say this was made in Japan?

Also unnecessary use of the word "thou" is likely.

Y'know what...boobies and sheeple aside, that looks rather interesting.

It also manages to make me want Persona 5 even more

Some Details:

Game Jouhou has posted a bunch of additional details on Catherine, Atlus's new PS3 and Xbox 360 action adventure game.

...

While the game's name is Catherine, the main character is actually a 32-year-old salaryman named Vincent (voiced by Koichi Yamadera). Catherine (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro) is a stylish 22-year-old girl who apparently has the charms of a young girl.

The game begins when Vincent, a vegetarian who has no ambition in work or love (I'm not sure if he's literally a "vegetarian," or if the term "vegetarian" is some sort of metaphor for his personality) runs into the mysterious Catherine one day. At night, he has nightmares.

The nightmares serve as an action component for the game. Set in a world with an unending stairway, Vincent has to make it to the top of the stairs, or he will not be able to awaken.

...

Looks interesting, I'll keep an eye out for it.

In Japan, a "vegetarian" is a man who doesn't act appropriately manly. The Western equivalent would be something like "coward" or "wuss," to put it mildly.

The title made me think of Catherine Wheel. Can you put a Catherine Wheel on a Catherine Trailer?

I should really send this to my vegetarian best friend.

Man, I sure hope not

Got around to catching the trailer, and... you know, that may be the first jrpg I've run into that's just too weird for me.

Man, I sure hope not :(

Only if you're a Cathar.

Looking forward to this for the weird factor, if nothing else

I wonder if there is a word that means literally "vegetarian" but without those implications? Many Buddhists are vegetarian, and I thought Buddhism was popular in Japan, therefore... (Please forgive any gross ignorance of Japanese Buddhism or culture in general.)

菜食主義者 (saishokushugisha) is the Japanese term for vegetarian, but most people just use a Japanese pronunciation of vegetarian (ベジタリアン).

As for religion in Japan, that's a somewhat complicated subject. Most Japanese are registered as either Shinto or Buddhist at their local temple when they're born but aren't really practicing. It's just so ingrained into the culture that they honor the traditions without really believing in the deities. I wouldn't be surprised if you did a poll asking the general population more than half would say that they follow no religion.

Well that helped clear things up.

I almost clicked the link to watch it at work. Probably shouldn't do that.

I'm intrigued... Sign me up.

Good call.

Sorta vaguely reminds me of Ghost in the Shell, plus tits. Looks pretty weird, but I'll keep it on the radar.

Somebody needs to translate that, so I know what on earth they were saying.

...Not that I think that will help make things clearer.

Also, if by some act of God I win the grand prize in the donation drawing, I think I'm passing on the raven and getting a PS3. I'm just too practical.

The intro movie is out. Not a ton to it other than names, but there are a few glimpses (and it's safe for work this time). Shoji Meguro is composing the music, though.
