NHL 2010-2011: Free Agents; Kovalchuk Free Agency

Savard, Luongo, and Pronger's contracts are the only real ones that can be challenged since they haven't kicked in yet. It'd be a sh*t storm if the NHL voided Hossa's contract after a season. Pronger's contract isn't even really cap circumvention. It artificially lowers the cap hit but since he's already over 35 the hit stays regardless of when he retires.

Agreed on Pronger's point and I don't understand why the arbitrator named him, but the CBA does say that there is no time limit for an investigation into circumvention or contract voiding. You're right though, the NHL would not want to deal with the fallout from that.

I'm kind of hoping the Devils and Kovalchuk sign a contract structured like one of these two. There's just over a month until training camp starts, so it would keep things interesting until then.

This is for the Canucks fans:

Mrs. Gravey shot this at the Michael Bublé concert last night. Bublé and John Shorthouse serenade Tom Larscheid, complete with a tribute highlights video. I'll say this about Bublé: you can't fake that, he's a pretty genuine guy. And Shorty's not a bad singer!

(For those who don't know, Larscheid was the Canucks colour commentator on the local radio for the last 30+ years, and has now retired/been asked to retire. Shorthouse used to call the games with him until he moved to TV last season to replace Jim Hughson, who got upgraded to the CBC (though also downgraded in that Hughson has to call the eastern games).)
