(Super) Monday Night Combat Catch-All

This. For me, it's between 5 and 6 where things seem to go nuts. 5 is a bit low, 6 is crazy high for my tastes.

As for assassins, a good one can be very annoying. But I bet it's fun to play well (which I can't yet). Since I've played mostly gunner, my anti assassin strategy is to put a lot of points into my ground slam early. If I see one close and know I can't aim fast enough before they can grapple me, I just slam. If they grapple me and I still have some health left, as soon as the animation ends, I slam. Much easier than making sure I'm pointing in the right direction to grapple them.

If anybody finds a good wiki with details on exactly what goes on with a lot of stills, traps, etc, please post it. I'd like to know more details of some of the mechanics.

I've had trouble getting any kind of good quick game going at all. If you see me on, feel free to pester. If I'm playing FIFA, don't be offended.

Totally agree. So much replayability and so addictive. Over the weekend I bet I played it for 15 hours.

When we roll with at least 3 GWJers I'd say we win at least 80% of the time. GO TEAM!

Indeed, and when we ran with a team of 5 or 6, I don't think we lost a single match.

Since today is Monday, we should play again tonight.

I'll be on looking to play some tonight.

Also, apologies to Jekyl for whatever it was that happened yesterday. I heard you say... something and then you left the party, but my room was kind of a cacophony of pure noise noise at the time. I had three fans going and it was basically a wind tunnel. That combined with the game sound meant I only heard you probably half the time you spoke.

The house won't be 105 degrees today so I should be able to turn all that crap off and actually use voice chat.

I had similar problems last night. Stupid busted mic.

I will welcome a game with mics. No chatter has made it difficult to learn the ropes.

I might not be around tonight, though. They're showing Pee-Wee's Big Adventure at Montrose Harbor tonight as part of the outdoor summer movie thing. So... that's gonna be hard to pass up.

I'll be on later tonight, but probably not until after around 10pm gmt-6.

You get used to picking the shimmer out. I though they were irritating when I started, and now I find most of them to be amateurish. If you're playing support, remember the hurt/heal gun doesn't stick to cloaked assassins. Switch to the shotgun. Couple of direct shots will take them out, and (I think) one grapple (Left Trigger while holding shotgun) also kills assassins.

You can also hear a loud electric humming when they are near. I find that most of the assassins rely too much on the cloak and will come straight at you- I'll still occasionally get caught from behind by one, but if you can keep the shimmer in your field of view they're pretty harmless. Just jumping around/over them is usually enough to mess them up, letting you grapple or shoot them in the back while they try to figure out why their UBER SK1LLZ just failed them.

Pro tip for support guys:

If someone is on a second level or a bridge and you can't get to them, throw an airstrike beacon UNDER the bridge. They won't see an indicator that the strike is coming, and it will hit the bridge above. This works really well for a few of the maps where the enemy can set up on high ground just outside your base. Doesn't seem like most people have figured this out; they'll try to mass together above (false sense of security in numbers) and you can take out a TON of people at once, since they're all watching the jump pad for people to come up to flush em out.

On the other side, if a support tags you with a beacon, you can get under a bridge if you have enough time and the strike will hit the second level and miss you.

Having a great time with this game. I found the 3 or 4 games of Crossfire I played with pubbies weren't too bad either - actually almost zero voice chat going on (bad for teamwork but better than the typically annoying stuff you encounter in most 360 pub games). I may send a few invites out to those here that are playing alot - hope to get in some games with goodjers while there's interest.

About to jump on and get into a game with whoever wants in. If you're not on my friends list and you want in, just send me a request. Also feel free to join my party chat without asking.

I don't know what it is about this game, but we are pretty awesome. I'm used to GWJers doing well online, but these are stomp after stomp.

Good games last night guys. Lot of fun.

They really need to fix the weird networking. Hope the rest of you guys didn't have trouble staying in groups after I left. Kind of weird that I was the only person there for a bit that everybody could connect to pre-game.

The NAT type really frustrated me last night and I was too tired to untangle it all. Anyone got some clear, concise advice?

Otherwise, good bits of game. Hopefully I'll be able to actually settle into a game, learn how to play and get off of LVL 2.

First thing to try would be to go into your router settings and make sure UPnP is enabled and you don't have any static routing set up for the 360. In good implementations of UPnP, that will fix most of these issues. The problem is that a lot of routers don't have good implementations of UPnP, and with those routers, you might just have to turn UPnP off. Worst case scenario is you put your 360 in a DMZ so that nothing is blocked.

I think there was a recent thread here in the tech sub forum about a similar problem.

Also, you can search the net and find a lot of pages on things to try. Also, MS's page has a stuff here. Strict or moderate NAT issues specifically here.

noted. I'll take a look before I try to jump into another game. thanks, MB

Yeah, those poor pubbie sons of Female Doggoes.

I think it boils down to being able to say, "Hey, there are like four guys just outside our left entrance, they are destroying our turrets" and actually having people show up to help push back. I've been in pub games before where I was holding off a line of bots and watched two or three snipers on my team just run on past, going to do whatever it is that snipers do. Didn't give a damn about the base.

We did have a lot of opponents quiting out early last night.

Indeed. *internet high five*

I'm loving this game. Playing exclusively as Support, I am constantly a magnet for Assassins and I love it. No matter how many times I kill them with my shotgun, they keep coming back for more. Last night, I had my best game yet. The opposing team went with 4 Assassins. I ended up with 19 kills.

*edit to fix a typo*

I played quite a few pub games last night and the losing side almost always started losing players- I've seen that happen before but never as bad as last night.

MannishBoy wrote:

To be fair we mass quit several games after people dropped/new people showed up

As Clem noted, it's really key to be able to get a response from your teammates when your opponent has a Support/Gunner (overhealed)/Firebase (overhealed) set up outside your spawn on your flank. About the only thing that can stop that is the mighty power of airstrikes (barring being able to loop around behind them undetected).

I fell asleep at about 7:30 last night

Have you guys been playing this pretty regularly?

While I was playing, that only happened at the start of games, though. These people quit out when all hope was lost

Wonder if it's a stats thing. Trying to keep their ratings high. I haven't paid attention to how things are tracked, as that stuff isn't that big a deal. I know Gears put something in to penalize this type of thing.

We had 5-7 people in a party most of the night when I was on.

As far as I know, there's no stat tracked for games lost, or even percentage of games won. There is, however, a kill/death stat that appears on the first screen of the locker room. But I don't think you can look at other peoples' statistics, so I don't see how anyone would even care about that stuff.

Yeah, the ranking is solely based on total money accumulated.

I think I've played every day since it came out and we have at least 3 people on at most times during the night, with peaks of 7 or 8. 7 is the beguiling number, unfortunately, since there are teams of 6. We can pub at 6 and private match at 7, but 3 on 4 isn't terribly satisfying. Basically...we need to con 12 people into playing at once

I've mainly been pubbing- do I have to friend you guys up to play, or is it possible to create teams from specific players within the game?

ruhk wrote:

Friends list and parties is the way we organize.

If you guys see me on feel free to shoot me an invite - I'm sick of play public gamers where there's a minimum of 4 assassins/snipers on my team

I've no problem with the kits exactly (I think that the sniper especially can be a really resilient defender) but the kids that use them are just plain stupid

Also if you don't mind sharing what endorsements do you guys use for the support? I seem to get owned when I pick that class no matter what I choose...

There's no way to switch teams or pick sides within the game. You have to join a party lobby with us in game prior to starting the matchmaking process (be it public or private match). The best way to get in is to friend me and hop on at 9:30 pm eastern tonight. I'll hook you up with everyone else!

PS That means that everyone should hop on tonight at 9:30 pm eastern!

Edit: forgot that I can't get on until 9:30...

Personally I just use the default class configs, but I'd love to hear if anyone found a good custom class setup.
