Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

Come....show me what passes for fury among your misbegotten kind!

Were there any hands on previews or write ups for this game, or was the teaser trailer and a few screenshots all we got from E3 this year?

Is this a console only release?

Originally I think it was supposed to be an xbox only release.

I was so. Disappointed. That this game wasn't on open access at E3. The real-life Space Marines kind of made up for it, though.

Not anymore! It's coming to PCs. Please don't eat my system alive, Relic's next game.

Early 2011 was announced as the release date.

Very cool!

New preview up at Gamespot with gameplay footage.

Looks absolutely fantastic. I love the melee combat animations.

For every battle honour won a thousand heroes die unremembered, unmourned and unsung...

Yes, I'm tagging this thread. I just wish it was Space Wolves.

Ojør va Russ! Leman Russ! Fenrys Hjølda!

Wow. Except for his repetition of the 'close collaboration with Games Workshop,' that was a great vid.

I'm officially excited now. Its looking much more robust and playable than it was in the earlier demo videos. Glad its Relic doing it.

tag.

IGN hands on article.

Video preview.

With Relic at the helm, I know this game is going to be awesome because they "get" the WH40K universe. This shouldn't be like Gears where you have only a handful of enemies that can soak up bullets while slipping from cover to cover. Instead, you will be mowing down waves of enemies with explosive bolts, and striding through storms of bullets to get up close with your chainsword. As the producer said in the earlier video: "It makes no sense to have a traditional cover system in Space Marine. Space Marines don't hide behind cover."

While this is true most of the time (a marine's save of 3+ is better than the cover save of 4+), cover is still useful when being shot at with AP3 or lower weaponry. Which bypasses the marine's natural armor save

This statement makes me very happy.

That reminds me of one of my favourite space marine quotes.

(about not using camouflage)

"What my enemy can see, he will soon learn to fear."

So far they're hitting all the right points. I just hope they mix things up enough to keep things from getting repetitive.

Well it looks like the press all got the same look at a small slice, since we're seeing a lot of things being repeated. I'm assuming you're not going to be shooting hordes of Orks the whole game. Eldar, Chaos and who knows who else are going to be in there too, I hope.

In the E3 2009 trailer, just before the heavens are split open by the orbital barrage, you can see a Carnifex in the lower left hand side of the screen. Good chance the Tyranids are going to be in it.

I'd also put money on Chaos being in it as well.

I assume you can play a Devastator marine as well, because they wouldn't want to keep the heavy weapons out of your hands, I wonder if you'll be upgraded to Terminator armor as well.

It would be awesome if 2/3rds of the way through the game you gave your life for the Empire in a climactic scene (that appeared to be the end of the game) and then after a lengthy cut-to-black you were awakened as a Dreadnought.

Maybe not a devastator but I did see a marine hefting a heavy bolter in one video. It had a box magazine on it though. Not the powered belt-feed backpack rig. I guess that still counts?

Looks really good. From the video I saw, love the atmosphere..Glad Relic is working on this one..

One of the videos explains that they've created "events" around using the big weapons, so it looks like you get them at specific points for a short time to deal with the event, ie, Heavy bolter to turn an onrushing horde of orcs into a meat grinder, they showed a clip of this in action.

The gameplay footage far exceeds my expectations. Great work on effects, animation, excessive gore and lovely use of color. My only concern is that Relic may struggle with action game design, but they sure get the world and are using it well. This basically looks like that Dawn Of War intro video made flesh. I would prefer there to be a squad of Space Marines instead of an individual, but I'm not complaining.

Chaos taint confirmed.

Prepare yourself, brothers; we make planet fall in August 2011.

For the Emperor.

I paint 40K but have only played a little, little bit. I actually like the idea of it, and the world they've created, more than the idea of playing it. It's a hugely confusing set of rules that creates a very high barrier to entry.

That said, I love my little Black Templars and I am really, really looking forward to putting my gloved fist through the skulls of a lot of enemies of the Emperor.

I can't let this thread pop up again without saying "cinemaction."

I generally agree. I've got a small army sitting in boxes waiting for me to get out the paints. By the time I do, they'll all have dried out. Still, I enjoy the fiction and I keep trying to get my friends to play one of the RPGs.

I'm excited to play this when it arrives, especially since they pulled their heads out of their rectums and decided to release it on PC.

My only real concern is that this game will feel like you're a "space marine" instead of being an Adeptus Astartes. I've played tons of games as a space marine, (Doom anyone?) but a generic badass soldier isn't remotely the same as the trans-human warriors of the Adeptus Astartes. They went with the Ultramarines instead of one of the more exotic Chapters, and I'm hoping that doesn't mean they're watering down the game into Doom 40K.

I suppose with good enough graphics and level design even a "Doom 40K" game would be worth playing, but for me it would mean the difference between a release day purchase and waiting for a Steam sale.

I've read articles where they say that although you will encounter odds that certainly make you feel peril, in general they want you to feel like an almost unstoppable, genetically modified warrior in power armor that can crush through legions of enemy troops without hesitation or mercy. I am really hoping that translates well.

Also, instead of lame on-rails vehicle sections like every other game has, can I have a turn as a Dreadnaught in this one?
