Torchlight 2 Catch-All

You know what would be nice? Giving the saves cross-platform cloud support. I'd probably be playing on my mac right now if I didn't have to start from scratch.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is accounted for in TL2, seeing as the obstacle to doing it in TL1 was something like the character encoding in the saves. One thing to bear in mind is that TL is sold through a wide range of sources, so it may not be their priority to sort a problem for one feature of one store.

But the problem is the actual save file, right? Even if you move it between machines it still won't work. That is how I understand it at least.

Correct.

Try using a file conversion utility like dos2mac on the save file. If the only difference between the two versions is the file format of the native OS then it should theoretically work.

That... is not going to help. I guarantee it's not an end-of-line convention difference, because that would be trivial to solve in software.

Personally I think it's ridiculous if it's not the case that it's trivial to solve in software. A game save should only encode the information related to the game logic and that information shouldn't really be platform dependent. The fact that you have a level 57 Vanquisher with X equipment on level Y doesn't change across platform.

You would think that. But smarter people than me have tried every possible method of conversion over in the Runic Games forums, to no avail. It ain't going to happen for Torchlight 1 unless they program it themselves. That's why I want that built-in for Torchlight 2.

I'm in, and followed.

Credit to Bill Harris. The Immortal Machine podcast has an interview with Runic Games about Torchlight 2. I find it particularly interesting because their website uses the same theme as mine, but to better effect, imho.

BTW, Ravenlock around here is the host for that podcast and I've played a couple games with him before. I'd listen to the podcast regularly if I could still listen at work.

Oh sure.... that could be anyone's thunder that you've just tried to steal there, Marko... Hmmm?

Oh and why didn't you ask for a more Diablo 1-esque feel while you were at it? Eh?!

You might as well put the original quote in for those who can't watch the video at work.

No, no! You messed it up. It was totally:

"The only bad thing about Torchlight is that i can't play with no pants on...." - Marko T

And that's why they made co-op mode.

Pants or no pants, I'm playing this game.

I am pretty sure I am excited about this, but the pile grows.....

Sooo excited for this. Diablo 3 has taken too long, and Runic did such a great job IMO with Torchlight that I'm going for TL2 and not going to plunk down the cash for D3.

Same here. Two years ago, I was super excited for Diablo 3, but now I'd much rather give my money to Runic than Blizzard.

This will be out well before D3 unless it gets delayed a lot. I wouldn't expect D3 before nov or dec 2011.

I'd expect T2 no later than march 2011 and I'd wager just due to the nature of the 2 companies involved that D3 has more chance of being delayed than T2.

So I don't think its going to be an either or situation =)

Still can't wait to play. I hope they don't completely nix enchanting or nerf it out of its usefulness.

Freaking genius. Drops in multiplayer only show up to you until you pick them up. If you drop it, then anyone can pick it up. Hopefully that stops the people who loot really quickly...

Not only will TL2 be released long before D3, Max Schaefer thinks that their free-to-play Torchlight MMO could be out before D3. Considering that Runic has stated that they're currently working on TL2 and the MMO, and that Blizzard is notorious for taking forever to release their games, I think it's quite possible that Max's claim could become true.

I remember reading MS saying that they hope they release the MMO before D3 because if they don't they have no idea when they'll be able to - all of them will be too busy playing Diablo :d

At least they're realistic about it.

Interesting. Unfortunately, anytime I hear the words "steam punk", my body tenses up.

O'rly?

Looked around the Runic forums, it saddens me that they won't add physics to this one as well.

Why does the game need physics? I'd like to hear your arguments for what it would add to the gameplay. Just curious. Personally, i can't see what benefit it would have since there is already a knockback effect and corpses dissolve after a short time and having objects (i.e. things you want to pick up) cannonballing around the screen would be annoying.

Having played a lot of TitanQuest (which did have physics) it only really made monsters fly up in the air when they died and made the loot roll around a bit. Unless, of course, you want puzzles to be inserted into the gameplay - in which case i could see the argument for puzzles like those seen in Alien Swarm.
