Starcraft II HotS Multiplayer Swarm-All

Ah...crap. Sorry, Kier. My power went out. Thank god for my 3G iPad! Too bad I can't play SC2 on it.

The challenge maps are actually really great at prepping multiplayer skills. Redoing them to get the higher achievements is actually helping me with my micro skills, which are pretty terrible.

Ah, that sounds like a handy trick. Thanks!

Be aware though, that the longer the Extractor has been in build before you cancel it, you lose a certain amount of minerals. So you better get those hotkeys up to, "build Extracor - select larva - morph drone - cancel Extractor" within half a second.

Re: Extractor trick.

There's some debate on whether it's worth doing the extractor trick on 10 or instead getting an overlord on 9. Personally I prefer the overlord on 9 because it's less fiddly and feels smoother. Either way, there's not much difference. I sometimes still do the extractor trick if I accidentally spam out the 10th drone.

mrwynd, I think you can get away with using your "large map" build all the time. 10 pool seems like a very early timing and you don't even make any zerglings that early. You're just losing mining time because you get the pool before the three drones.

Playing through them at the moment, I think they're pretty valuable for anyone wanting to get into MP and feeling intimidated.

The hints system is really good for guiding the total noob too.

The best explanation I've heard for the extractor trick is that it's about larva efficiency. If you get an Overlord at 9, you're stuck at 3 larva for a while.

(Not that I'm so good at Zerg macro that it really matters.)

Speaking of the challenge maps, I perfected Rush Defense tonight. So proud of myself.

I didn't use the extractor trick through most of beta, I'll try some more 13-14 pools with overlord on 9.

It was tested by someone on the TL forums a few weeks ago: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=130273

The final verdict was, "Extractor trick doesn't seem viable in any situation".

No problem, I just went on and played a different game. I was wondering it it was something I said though. Good to hear it was just the power!

Yeah, I've gone back to overlord at 9, pool at 13, hatch at 15.

I'd like to point out that a good way to find each other when interested in some multiplayer - hope in Ventrilo.

I am finally in. meh.735 on the EU BNet. Also, please invite me into the Steamgroup, please.

Hold on; you were concerned about being stuck with a name you didn't like, so you picked 'meh'?

Exactly. After days of pondering I went "Meh, screw this! Ohhh... wait a second..."

Reading y'all talking about strategies is giving me buyer's remorse even as I download the client. I'm such an RTS lightweight!

Still, I really enjoyed SC1 single-player, and also when I could play against someone equally as crappy as myself.

Not quite ready for MP yet, but interested in following the conversation.

Well, now that I've finished the single player I'm ready to get into the multiplayer madness. Latrine.552 reporting for duty.

I just played my first practice game and won. I realize that I have a pretty severe online gaming anxiety disorder. I'm down for some comp stomp but I don't think I can survive playing anything beyond that. I'll post my ID in a few minutes.

I am going to post my protoss strats.... Gonna get the replays uploaded and links here in a sec.

I play all the races.... But my primary focus is how fast I can optimize carrier production. I also do rushes. I don't do any mid-game defense or push. If I knew counters I would do it. These were my very first two games. The stress levels immense against real people. Case and point.... That Starcraft 1 night that was had a year ago where me and I think latrine were playing against 6 people.

Feel free to hit me up on steam rickyyo and I'll give you my Real ID details. I don't want that character code shenanigans. I really enjoy comp stomp. That is what I play with my father.

Okay, silly question. Where does it say the vector.### or whatever?

Click on the add a friend button and it will tell you your numbers.

Thank you.

I believe I am Vector.778 but who knows if I'm being accurate.

Any way to turn off RealID?

Edit: And yeah, add me to the Steam group: vectortheangel

Edit2: Added myself to the google doc.

What do you mean "turn off" Real ID? If you don't add anyone via their Bnet email (or let them add you), then they won't see your real name. Just add people by their character names.

That's pretty much what I mean. Wasn't entirely clear how it worked.

Yes, RealID is opt-in, in that only people who are your RealID friends - and their RealID friends - can see your real name. Character friends, which are added with the character name and the code, are totally different. And since there's an authorization required for someone to add you, you can just reject any RealID requests you happen to get.

As with everything else, though, this is subject to change without notice.

A couple of fun comp stomps with Luggage before I needed to break for lunch.

Easy AI we steamrolled, Medium was tough at first, but we planned our forced pretty well and we managed to win it.

I did struggle initially by not doing a Zealot rush which is my pretty standard MO, instead holding back and going for gas to build Sentries and Stalkers. Thankfully Luggage managed to cover my back against the first two attacks so we could go on to win it.

I had the most insane 3v3 game last night. We should not have won. My friends and I were laughing for a solid minute afterward.

It was like two separate games. One, where my friends were utterly crushed by mass marines and Stalkers while I ignored them and banshee rushed. The other, where we're all lifting off and hiding our new bases, and then my friend builds six BattleCruisers and wins.

Wow. Fun to watch. I might forward it to a couple of friends as an illustration of why it can be worth it not to give up early at our level of play.

I start off so good, but can never get that final oomph to finish someone off and i leave myself open to counter attacks Still if you want a punching back shoot an invite out.
