The Passion of the Christ

I am getting my tickets for this movie tonight and I was curious if any of you guys are going to see it? It is only showing in select cities and it has been said that the producers are avoiding showings in liberal, affluent, or Jewish communities. (Knoxville doesn't meet that criteria)

I am really looking forward to seeing it. The level of graphic violence depicted is supposed to be astonishing. It is also interesting to note that Mel Gibson was finally pressured enough to put English subtitles into the movie.

"Good" screen violence

Review of the movie

I''m going friday. I''ve been waiting for this movie for a year now so I can''t wait.

I''m thinking of going. Mainly because of this article.

No thanks. I already know how it ends.

Yeah, that''s why I refuse to see Braveheart.

My girlfriend and I are going with some other couples tomorrow night. None of us are christians as such, but we''re all educated on the subject of christianity. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how Mel Gibson plans to make a 40-minute-long crucifixtion watchable (if that is his plan at all).

Yeah, that''s why I refuse to see Braveheart.

Are you comparing ""Braveheart"" to ""The Passion""?

How dare you sir!

*slaps Ral in the face with a glove*

Am I the only one who isn''t going to it because I get turned off by foreign language films in the theaters?

ooooh! The glove has been thrown down by Fang!

French duel time!

Even with subtitles now added you won''t go?

If I wanted to read during a movie, I''d bring the novelization of said movie. Is there one out for this one?

I think R.A. Salvatore is working on it.

Picture book

Check out this guy''s review:

This is based on the doctrine and dogma of the Nicene Creed, fabricated in the 4th Century to elevate the status of Christianity for the then-new ""Holy Roman Empire"" (which, by the way, perpetrated centuries of theocratic oppression and cruelty called the Dark Ages).

It is based on the idea that only by ""accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior"" can you receive salvation, because ""Jesus died for the sins of humanity.""

The truth is that Jesus allowed himself to be tortured and crucified to serve as a perfect example of the pacifist and martyr. This is made clear in a book called Real Prophecy Unveiled, which I highly recommend.

Mel Gibson has unwittingly aligned himself with the Religious Right, which is fundamentally wrong.

Hopefully. And surely a good movie with a bit of reading is better than no movie at all?

Personally, I figure I''m not part of the target audience. So I''m going to spend the money on beer instead.

I feel the same way about ""The Hours"". I figure men have nothing to learn watching a movie about feminist women.

I nominate ral to be GWJ''s official movie critic. But, the kicker is he is limited to two sentences.

I''m game, as long as you''re comfortable with most of my reviews wither having alotof commas, or else being: ""Figured it sucked. Didn''t see it.""

Which we could abreviate to FISDSI...

I''m certainly looking forward to seeing it tomorrow.
And I don''t think there is any ""target audience."" I think it''s supposed to be geared for anyone interested in seeing what Jesus Christ is all about.
But I haven''t seen the movie yet, so maybe I should withhold judgement...

I want to go myself, but the wife doesn''t want to see all the graphic violence. I guess I could go catch a matinee by myself, but I''ve never really enjoyed going to the movies alone.

Actually, I almost wished they didn''t add them. Then again, I miss latin masses so I must be a freak.

I hear its almost unwatchable. I saw Gibson on ExtraExtra, and he said that its violent, violent enough to make you uncomfortable, which is good, I think. His take was that Christians kind of gloss over the enormity of the sacrifice, so it''s his job to impress it upon the audience.

I bow before the sublimity of your sarcasm sir.

Really? I almost prefer going alone. I tend to find it more relaxing. The only time I like going with other people is for the really big type movie, ie - LotR or Star Wars. It''s why I also enjoy going to weekday matinees - the theatres aren''t as full and I just relax and enjoy the movie more.

I prefer going to the movies with people for the same basic reason I would prefer to take a buddy along while I wait in line at the DMV (no takers yet) - it isn''t the need for company during the event itself, but rather all that empty time that seems to surround the event...

Gibson belongs to a fundementalist sect of Christianity and has some pretty screwed up views.
I''ll wait for it to come to digicable.

I know what your saying ral, but that''s what the GBA is for my brother!

Ebert''s review certainly made it sound like a ''by christians, for christians'' kind of thing. I might check it out sometime later, since it seems to be a well-crafted piece of film and all, but I''m not going pay full theatre price for it. I like my beer.

Although I must say all this mutterings about extreme violence is making me a bit curious. Then again it''s going to have to be something really extraordinary to faze me after having seen the uncut version of Ichi the Killer...

Wait a minute. I thought christians were against extreme violence in the media.

I hear this movie is based on a book. Should I read the book before seeing the movie?

I thought christians were against extreme violence in the media.

They are against the glorification of violence for its own gratutitous sake, not its accurate portrayal when there is meaning to be had.

I''m kind of on the fence about this... my vision is not so great so reading sub titles in a movie is a lot of effort, but it dose look like it will be very well done. Course religious dogma tends to make me very angry for reasons I have never figured out... but then I like to go to anything thing that is likely to be protested... I just don''t know... maybe I should wait for the DVD.
