DC: Universe - Catch All

high def version linked up farther in the thread

OOPs, missed that. Thought it was just another link to the gameplay trailer with the guy "I can be a hero, or a villain"...

I saw an alpha version of this at Comic Con 2 years ago and was not really impressed. However I heard nothing since so I can assume they aren't giving away all their tricks until its closing time. I do hope they do good stuff with superheros, CO is fun but could use a lot more content and powers.

It was one of the central things at the DC booth at comic con this year; they had a beta build. They also played the above clip every half hour or so. It was kind of annoying, considering, I was stuck a stones throw away in the Dark Horse booth for the entirety of my time there. Not as annoying as the Naruto booth and its carnival squawker guy.

I didn't make it to Comic Con this year, but I'm sure they'll have a showing at PAX where I will be!

As someone who had Super Friends wallpaper back when I was three, I've wanted a good DC video game for ages ... almost bought the Mortal Kombat game to get a fix, but ended up watching the the cinematics on YouTube instead (dodged a bullet there!). This looks like DCUO will finally deliver. I'm ready to get silly excited. Not only will I be getting a DC superhero game, but this'll be my first MMO...

In fact, I want to do some background reading (yeah, I'm a nerd; I get excited by doing homework). My last prolonged exposure to anything DC was waaay back with Justice League International (highly underrated), and clearly this is a different story altogether. So, what's the best crash course on the current state of the DC Universe?

(And if I missed any good DC games -- and Arkham Asylum doesn't count; I want superpowers, people -- I'm happy to catch up on those, too.)

I'm kind of bummed, because had this been a trailer for a single player game that would play in the vein as Batman: AA or Deus Ex, it would probably be a day one purchase. I'm just not sure that an MMO is something I am actually going to want to play. But the trailer has me pretty darn intrigued.

Dick Grayson's Batman.

A bunch of the Dead have returned to life, but under a condition that death is now a less....permeable state.

The Green Lantern Corps now have rivals in 6 other colors, each representing an emotional state. Sinestro is the head of the Sinstero corp (the yellow corp), based on fear.

Wonder wears pants.

Every flash is alive.

Jason Todd (robin 2) is alive and evil.

There was a "new Krypton" filled with 10s of thousands of kryptonians, but Lois Lane's dad blew it up. Now there's only a few, pissed off ones left.

Dead man is alive?

Wow.

Also worth noting, Bruce Wayne is going to be Batman again real soon now. That's one of the big comic 'events' happening this year.

Is he? I get a "Steve Rogers comes back to life, but Bucky stays Captain America" vibe. Maybe It's just cause I like, y'know story progression. But I defer to your insider info.

No insider info, just my guess at what they've said was coming up.

I think it mostly has to do with brand identity. Batman *is* Bruce Wayne, and him not being Batman is weird for Joe Six Pack.

Wait, what, Bruce Wayne is no longer Batman? I thought he got his back healed?

Which is where i last left that story. Guess statutes of limitations though is passed on spoilers for the rest.

I think that was back in the Bane/Azrael event like 15 years ago during the Knightfall arc. His recent passing away was shortly before the Blackest Night arc (where all the other Corps based on emotions popped up). They basically shut down all the other Batman related comic books and focused on who would succeed Batman in Battle For The Cowl.

Wow....I guess I haven't really paid much attention to comics since then, that is why I was surprised.

I got caught by that graphic novel in a bookstore, skimmed most of it, and wondered, "why the HELL would you do that??" For once they transitioned to a new guy in the old suit (more or less), and it was a better fit. Why bring back the tweener? Not a good story, not a good launching pad for stories, nothing other than nostalgia. I was hoping he'd go away at the end of that book. He didn't.

A couple of my co-workers talked about the game at FanFaire this week. You can see the full series of videos from the panel on Massively.

I'm still doing my beta start and beta key chant...

I'm going to have to change which beta dieties mine are directed at. I'm getting all the wrong ones.

Well its really unfortunate that Starcraft 2 was the only recent beta I've been in where they later send an extra beta key you can use to get a bud to play with you in the beta.

You have had rotten luck with recent betas. (I've been hit or miss) So I totally would send you a friend key. Hopefully one or both of us get into either JGE, Black Prophecy, The Agency, TERA or DCUO.

Just started looking in to this. I think at first the whole reason I put no attention toward this game was iconic characters thing. A MMO based in the DC universe was kinda a turn off for me. Its not that I don't like the DC stuff, have enjoyed both DC games and comics in the past. Having a world where everything if so heavily based on one IP just did not sit right. But then again there are more mass IP based MMO's out there then there have been ones based off new IPs. So its not much of a gripe. I finally gave in and started actively seeking info on the game.

After seeing some of the combat videos my interest has peaked. The game may very well end up being what Champions wanted to be but fell short of. I really want to see more but I could see myself playing this when it comes out. What I am most interested is how the Weapon/Powers/Movement system works.

How many options will we see?
How dynamically different will combat be with different combinations of the three?
Will we be able to customize the looks of powers to help them fit our characters theme?

Also wondering if there are pet or pet like powers. I know those can be difficult to balance in an action games but I got to ask. Mastermind was my favorite archetype in CoX and I tried my damnest to get a pet build to work in champions.

As for iconic powers from DC stuff that interest me I would not mind seeing a fear set based off Scarecrow's powers.

Your questions are all our questions too. Some things we just won't know until we get our hands on it. I think the beta was supposed to start today, no?

As for pets, I've heard devs say a few times that there is at least helper droid summoning. I don't think that is the extent of it but that is all that I have seen so far.

I thought so. No friendly email in my inbox though.

New trailer released for Gamecon.

Looks good!

looks like an updated City of Heroes engine. Metropolis looks like a prettier Paragon City.
I'm looking forward to this (had hoped for a beta invite), but seeing Superman kickboxing in that last video makes me wonder if we're going to see Superman or Green Lantern getting knocked on their asses repeatedly, at which point all credibility of the IP will be over for me.

I might just ahve to buy this when it comes out....though between that, cataclysm for WoW and Kinect all coming out in November, wonder when I will have time to play them all:)

For me I feel like all of the trailer MOVIES look amazing and make me super excited...but all of the GAMEPLAY trailers leave me feeling cold

Exactly! I really started t think that this was going to be an MMO I might be interested in. But the gameplay looks completely uninteresting.

I'm reading Final Crisis right now, and a game like this is something I'd really be into right now. I think it would be more attractive as an action adventure game, like Batman: AA, rather than an MMO.

But those trailers keep getting me interested!

As a MMO veteran the gameplay stuff is what has me interested. Like someone mentioned earlier it looks a lot like what Champions promised us it would be but wasnt. If thats the case they have a winner. If its just a reskin with a different IP this will eventually fall by the wayside.

They are doing a lot of things differently. Its just is it different enough? And how does it make the combat better and the things to do more fun?

Travel powers are earned through different means such as achievements. You also won't start out with something like flight. You will have to work your way up from glide first. This could be awesome but if combat is ho hum then the game won't have any longevity.

But the interactive action combat looks really great to me!
