Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

More new music I've recently found thanks to the internets.

First is Ring Capacity by Kirby Krackle which is nerd rock, this song is about Green Lantern.

The other is Buffalo by Powerlifter a fun little chiptune party band with a music video full of hipsters being ironic. I would assume they are being ironic anyway.

That is Zoe Keating, who you might know from the time her take on Terry Riley's In C was featured on RadioLab. She has just released a new album that is streaming for free on her website for now, and it's really good.

I know her from her work with Amanda Palmer! Check out "What's the Use of Wondrin'" - good video, good cover filled with double entendre.

The Like - He's Not A Boy
60s pop throwback ditty. I dig it.

Sounds good. I like...The Like? I listened to the other songs on their youtube page, too. I don't usually get down with chick singers, but I make exceptions.

And if you guys want a 60's throwback from this side of the pond, there's The Best Coast

On a related note:

Locksley - Darling It's True

Band: Dr. Steel
song: Build the Robots
genre: Industrial Hip-Hop Opera

Dr. Steel is just one of those bands that is wholly unique as a genre.
Its website is a kick and a half too.

Watching The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (beautiful movie btw) reminded me of the main theme from The 400 Blows (another great movie).

99 cents well spent on Amazon. It's better when combined with the movie, though.

Just been watching that in French class. If you're a giant film nerd, go watch it everybody. Even if this is the band/song thread.

To make it on topic: the soundtrack for that film is easily the best of Truffaut's movies, on a par with Baisers Volés (Stolen Kisses) which has this great song - Que reste-t-il de nos amours by Charles Trenet - as the main theme. Domicile Conjugal's soundtrack is horrible

To throw my hat into the 60s Throwback ring:

My friend's band, Sic Alps. 60's style psychedelic garage rock is probably the best description, although that's a bit of a pigeonhole. They toured with Sonic Youth earlier this year. Good stuff all around.

Sic Alps - Arthur Machen

If you want some good Chillout have a listen to God is An Astronaut

Totally crushing on Jonsi's "Go Do" again. Haven't heard it for two months, but a few seconds are enough and I swept off my feet once again.

Hurray for the Jonsi love! I got to seem him play live a few months back. It was great fun.

Wow, must have been amazing...

I'll give a +1 to those talking about God Is An Astronaut and Zoe Keating. Really great stuff. God Is An Astronaut has gotten me through many a tough time.

Having spent some quality time with the new Crystal Castles album, I can say that "Celestica" is the stand-out track for quality and "Doe Deer" is unlistenable garbage. The rest of the album is mixed; it's more coherent than their first album, but it still struggles to remain interesting over its running time.

Phantogram. I can't stop listening!

New M.I.A. album... \o/

Captain_Arrrg,

Thanks for the recommendation. Now, Phantogram can be the band that I can't stop listening to, too.

Thank Amazon. They were on a list of the best of 2010 (weird, I know) and were definitely the best of the ones I didn't already have. A taste of the ones I saved for later:

Kings Go Forth

Carolina Chocolate Drops

I make a semi-monthly mix of favorite new (to me) music and other songs that I can't shake at the moment. It serves to satiate my need to hear these songs over and over again, along with being a sort of time capsule of what I was listening to at the time. I found one from November of 2006, the other day, and it was amazing to me the songs that I was digging on, then.

I give copies of them to a few of my close friends and love hearing back from them what songs they get attached to. It only struck me, today, to post a track list for your indulgence. So, here's my June 2010 Mix. Hope you enjoy.

Disc 1
1.The Morning Benders - Excuses
2.Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - Janglin'
3.Broken Social Scene - Texico Female Doggoes
4.Vampire Weekend - Taxi Cab
5.Fang Island - Daisy
6.Josh Ritter - Folk Bloodbath
7.The Black Keys - Tighten Up
8.The Mumlers - Don't Throw Me Away (a minute of talking before the song, but wait for it. The actual music will surprise you after listening to the singer talk)
9.Okkervil River - Unless It's Kicks
10.Dr. Dog - Jackie Wants A Black Eye
11.Yeasayer - Ambling Alp
12.Fruit Bats - Singing Joy To The World
13.Parlour Steps - As The World Turned Out
14.The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio
15.The Hold Steady - Soft In The Center
16.MGMT - Brian Eno

Disc 2
1.Codeine Velvet Club - Hollywood
2.Interpol - Lights
3.Shout Out Louds - 1999
4.Zeus - The River By The Garden
5.Foreign Born - Union Hall
6.Free Energy - Dream City
7.The Gaslight Anthem - The Diamond Church Street Choir
8.Julian Plenti - Fly As You Might
9.The Best Coast - When I'm With You
10.Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore - Something, Somewhere, Sometime
11.The Heavy - Oh No! Not You Again!
12.Albert Hammond Jr. - G Up
13.Smith Westerns - Be My Girl
14.Spring Tigers - New Improved Formula
15.Good Old War - Woody's Hood Boogie Woogie
16.Surfer Blood - Harmonix
17.Band Of Horses - On My Way Back Home
18.Broken Bells - The High Road

I'm working on my July Mix, right now. All I can say is that it will definitely include something from Titus Andronicus.

Cheers.

I think you can add me to the group of non-stop listening. I really dug those three tracks and am grabbing all I can, for proper listening enjoyment.

Thanks to the Captain.

Wow, skeletonframes! Muchos thanks. After downloading "Big Echo", I am really into the Morning Benders and will trust your judgement on this other music

If you ever get a chance to see them live... do it! I dunno if they'll ever come to the UK. It'll probably depend on how their career goes. I got to see them open for Broken Bells, and I enjoyed their set even more than the Broken Bells (which was great too).

Following up with my post here, I'd like to recommend two incredible ladies to you...

There's young Lykke Li <3 ...

.. and the even more awesome Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes)

Morning Benders. I'm seeing them open for The Black Keys on a month. It will be awesome. True story.

Holy hell, how did I never see this thread before? It is totally packed with win.

Here's what I'm loving right now.

Band of Skulls - Patterns.

Or their whole album, Baby Darling Dollface Honey, really.

Anyone like Vampire Weekend, but don't have their first album, yet? (for shame)

Didn't realise Lykke Li had done anything recently so thanks for that, been hoping for some new songs from her for a while. I've seen Lykke Li and Bat for Lashes live in the past and have to say they were both great.

Keeping with female artists I have to recommend Sophie Hunger. Saw her live a few weeks ago at Glastonbury playing to an audience who had no idea who she was and was basically there to get out of the sun for a while and she really impressed. It also made me struggle to think of any other singer or band I know of from Switzerland.

And a performance I saw on TV ages ago but only just got round to checking out the album, really impressive guitar playing:

What kind of thread is this if I can't even give away a copy of Vampire Weekend for free? This thread disappoints!

I had no idea that's what your other post was about. I thought you were just chastening us for not having Vampire Weekend, yet, if we didn't already.
