So uh... are these Bear or Mountain Lion prints?

I'm with Shoal on the 12g. If you're going to have a problem with the bear, it will be at close range. If he is too far to hit with the shotty, you're better off just ignoring it.

Except Gravey, you owe me a new polo shirt since I spewed coffee all over the one I'm wearing now. I'll never look at that tree the same again!

Happy to help.

Though a bear is stronger and more physically dangerous than a Mountain Lion, you are still better off with bears. If a bear gets really hungry (long drought conditions or whatnot) it may break into your house or car and get at trash or food. If a Mountain Lion gets hungry enough it will actually hunt children.

Generally grown adults aren't on the menu though.

Now that the real threat has been identified, I can admit that I'm envious of your houses/views, PAR and (particularly) DF7.

Haakon's got a thing for pedobear!

If you find anymore tracks and need to identify them you can use this handy chart.

DF7 - where was your old house? That neighborhood looks awfully familiar.

I'll defer to the "local" wisdom on the shotgun, but I won't detract it. My information is based on experience. I grew up in Alaska dealing with bears. But I do understand that the bears we were dealing with in our front yard aren't those cute little black bears still small enough to climb trees like you have down here.

I'll just reiterate that you need to get a hold of some local authorities like the sheriff's department and Colorado Fish and Game. They know what the working definition of "loaded for bear" would be for your area.

I like that on the first page the two Canadians didn't post anything useful. Of course all three of us are from Vancouver.

It's probably a mountain lion riding a bear.

I'm surprised nobody has sugested you get a dog. So, I'll suggest it.

Get a dog. A big one.

I didn't suggest that because we had two dogs killed that way when I was growing up. Unless you're willing to keep a bear pack and train them to deal with it, I would think hard about this.

But as I mentioned above, maybe that's not so applicable here.

I already have a big dog

Smart, the one sure defense against pedobear!

Get him a big, spiked collar and mount lazers on a backpack. You should be fine.

She doesn't like the stalking pedobear picture?

Glad she likes it.

Those are genuine T-Rex head-mounted lazers, custom adapted for your pooch.

Well its definitely a bear. Wife and I were getting the mail this evening when some people driving down the road stopped near us and said a bear was under our neighbors porch about 1/4 mile up the road. They said it was a pretty good sized one. They pointed at Ash (our Malamute) and said it was easily 2 to 3 times the size of him.

Thinking its time to call the DOW. If its getting that close to homes its probably a nuisance right?

PAR

You had a bear peeking in your window a week ago and you haven't called the DoW yet? I would have called them before leaving the attic.

I'm beginning to think that this whole "head North to escape from zombies" ploy is a bear trick. They stage a fake zombie uprising down south then get their pick of the fatter refuges.

Before you call in the authorities you should check that you don't get some kind of RL achievement for fighting a bear with a knife.

(Imagines Par at a future job interview. The potential employer looks up from reading his resume, "You've got the RL 'Fight a bear armed only with a knife' achievement. Nice. Not that I generally approve of people stabbing to death wild animals but still, very nice.")

I'm pretty sure that the only RL bear-related achievement is to defeat one by smiling at it.

Be sure to keep you car doors locked Par!
