Nintendo announces the "3DS" with no need for glasses

3D camera - never before have more cameras been used to take more wang shots.

Oh sure... that was very convenient wasn't it?

Convenient.

Tannhauser'ed!

Warren Spector has high praise for the 3DS.

The last day of the show, I actually got out of the Disney Interactive booth around 4:15. I knew I was only going to get to see One Thing at E3. And I knew it was going to be either Deus Ex: Human Revolution or the 3DS. Though it pained me to make the call, the 3DS got the nod.

All I can say is “Wow!” Okay, I lied – I can and will say a lot more than “wow.”

The 3DS changed my life. Seriously. I can be pretty stubborn and when I decide I know something or I’m right about something, I don’t often change my mind. Well, I just want to say I’ve been completely wrong about 3D all my life. I never got it before. Until now.
Until the 3DS.

I'm sick of seeing this and not knowing what people are referencing. Someone help.

"Tannhauser'd" is something you say when you post something that someone else just posted. So, in this case, Quintin implied that Jonman broke his own DS but Duoae had already made the same insinuation (although the time gap is usually smaller than twenty minutes). It comes from the Team Fortress 2 thread where Tannhauser was constantly posting updates just after someone else.

I can't tell if this is intentional or poetry in motion.

"Tannhauser'ed" usual means something along the lines of "Beaten to the punch", such as when someone posts a reply to something you were in the middle of replying to yourself.

edit: I should have seen that coming.

I tried to type extra fast.

Is this some sort of recursive thread?

I see. So this has been an orgy of Tannhauserism, I guess?

The beauty of it is that it was the wife who was sitting next to it when it slid off the chair!

So you framed her to guilt her into letting you buy a 3DS?

Nice work!

That's how I read that at first.

It's the product we've all been waiting for!

The way I read it at first was much grosser.

Hah! I had discerned the meaning of the phrase from context, but I always imagined it was somehow linked to the Tannhauser Gate.

Yeah the real question is how hackable will the 3DS be? I'm sure the inclusion of of a SD card slot will help matters along.

Why's that the real question? The DS is easily hacked and is still arguably the most successful system ever.

All my stuff is on a CycloDS. I'm not going back to packing around a pocket of DS games.

Same here. I bet they'll make a new flash cart or use the SD card slot. I doubt a CycloDS cart can be updated to work for 3DS games.

You're probably right. I guess I'll wait for flashcarts.

Hard to explain why, but I haven't been this excited for a new Nintendo platform since the N64. I really can't wait to get my hands on a 3DS!

THQ Interview[/url]]Nintendo really wants to launch with a very balanced portfolio. They really don’t want it to feel like a kiddie platform. They were very clear: they really wanted Saints Row on it

Interesting. There's been a bit of this stuff floating around, but this was the first I've read where someone making a game actually said it. Looks like Nintendo may be trying to round things out. I think the best thing they can do for this, though is make their online system just work and without stupid codes and clunky interfaces. Otherwise, all of these 'gamers games' will more than likely fall flat or just mildly succeed like they've been doing on their current platform.

Yeah it's high time the My Nintendo account gets linked with purchases and your 3DS system. That way people can comfortably buy games from their online services without fear of losing them down the road. And have a friend list that extends beyond one game.

Semi-thread necro, but apparently Julian Gollop(X-Com) is working on a Turn-Based Strategy launch title for the 3DS.

From RPS:

Publishers run a mile from anything with turn-based mechanics – it is regarded as too niche. RTS games pretty much killed off turn-based strategy games in the mid-90s – but now even RTS games are regarded as niche. So all my experience working turn-based games from 1983-1997 is now somewhat obsolete, despite the success of X-Com. However, I am now working on a turn-based tactical RPG which will be a 3DS launch title. Thanks to ‘Advance Wars’, ‘Fire Emblem’ and ‘Final Fantasy Tactics’ it seems turn-based games are not totally dead – at least for Nintendo handhelds. I would also argue that Pokemon has a lot of parallels with X-Com in its game system, despite being classified as an ‘RPG’. The core of Pokemon is a turn-based tactical battle enriched by a sophisticated higher level meta-game that allows players to experiment with many game elements and combinations of forces – and Pokemon is the second most successful game franchise in the world. If done right, would an X-Com game with a turn-based combat system be successful? Absolutely!

Semi-thread necro, but apparently I have a boner.
