"A Life Well Wasted" (Robert Ashley's Podcast)

I disagree about Falcon. Maybe I'm jaded, but I saw nothing but a fame seeking loser. Sure he may want to write about games, but instead of actually pursuing schooling that would allow him to hone his craft, he's been trying to cash in on the fame of his c*ck. He seems to be a perfect example of what Ashley was talking about at the beginning about the archaic ideals of persaverance and hard work. The dude has an idea and that is about it.

Yes, yes it was!

I liked this LWW a lot. I think Ashley found a really nice balance between the content of stories and the presentation (the music, the editing, etc) this time around.

This whole conversation reminds me of:

That guy was a grade-A douche.
I don't care that they discussed penises for a good portion of the show. A penis is a penis no matter the size. Big deal. You see your penis everyday. Does it make you uncomfortable?

Way to miss the point.

There's no reason not to include the story, and there's a really quick way you could have introduced the story and made mention of this guy's "endowments" that didn't include 2 solid minutes of him talking about wrapping a foreskin around a doorknob.

Again, it's all a matter of presentation. On that particular show, that incident was mentioned and then moved on, and despite being a rather weird subject, it wasn't presented in an overly graphic way.

Apparently for most of you this wasn't any big deal. All I Was trying to say was that at least for me Ashley's message was lost because of his chosen method of delivery. He could have told the exact same story without the gory details.

EDIT:

And besides, I happen to love willies.

I am just mad he did not make this joke. "Still not a bigger dick than Bobby Kotick."

I was in this episode, but I've listed a few times and so far it seems like the only clip he used was me saying my name. And maybe a quick edit of a single word. Umbrella guy was pretty awesome. I would play a game with umbrella guy. Although it does sound a bit like Super Princess Peach and The Avengers.

Super stocked when I got to the end of the show and heard that Ashley is moving to my town. Hope I get to have a drink with him sometime.

I loved the whole episode, even that infamous final interview. Ashley nailed it about taking an idea and working towards making something of it, not just hoping success falls into (or out from) your lap.

I have loved every episode of the podcast, but I really didn't like the last interview on this one. I found Falcon incredibly off-putting, and the talk of penis totally unnecessary on a gaming podcast.

Falcon needs to get over himself - I thought the guy came across as a completely talentless asshole.

Left a really bad taste in my mouth, as I really enjoyed the first half of the podcast.

Thanks, I'm here all week.

You know, when I wrote that I figured one of you knuckleheads would edit that to be pervy.

I sort of took the point that the guy, for all his high self-image, lives in his mom's basement and doesn't seem to have any big ideas to get out of there. I may not have a freakishly large penis, but I felt pretty good by comparison.

He came across as stuck in himself. The dick talk was kinda funny, but it pales in comparison to the fact that I'm slightly more successful than that tool at 20.

I was apparently still subscribed to the podcast feed.

Ashley's been working on some music -- the album website is http://www.icometoshanghai.com/ and he published the album as the latest episode of the podcast. (Not linked from ALWW website, but the iTunes feed is here.)

So that's what that is. I haven't listened to it yet.

In light of the recent necro.

I would swear that he's producing "The Joystiq Show" now. Just the style and presentation in the new format made me immediately think, A Life Well Wasted.

I was surprised to see there was a new episode, momentarily disappointed when I read the episode description, then finally had that disappointment pleasantly ameliorated since I really like his first album. More Air and less Meat Puppets-sounding this one, but I'll send some money their way and download the album proper when I get home. ALWW returns soon...

Really loving the album; highly recommended!

I thought the producer of the GWJ podcast (Jonathan Downing?) was also doing Joystiq's podcast... I could be (and likely am) completely wrong though.

I have no idea who the producer is. There's just a similar sound to how the whole thing is constructed. Some intangible gestalt.

You thought right.

I don't think it's so intangible, I think the most obvious parallel is the use of thematic music and interstitial voicemail-style recordings to tie together the different segments.

Holy crap, something just downloaded for this.

haven't looked, but I'm guessing he's probably just promoting his music

He is doing that. On a side note, I haven't run into him but I keep thinking that should happen some time- he's currently residing in the same town I hang my hat at. Also, his music kickstarter made almost $10K.

Yeah I discovered this. Boo.

Aaaaand his Kickstarter is over with. He got the funding and they turned it off. Now they get to press 300+ vinyl albums.

He should totally do a Kickstarter for ALWW. I know he wants to focus on his music, but we could pay his salary.

I don't recall his music, but except for the dick show, I liked the podcast a lot.

Yah the dick show was base and really turned me off to him and what I thought the show was supposes to be.

Another one off? Haven't looked it up yet, but enjoyed the format and voice of the old ones. Except the penis show.
