@ Roguelike games

Have any of you guys tried ASCII Sector? Its a Privateer remake. The game is quite fun if you liked the original. It recently added some new features like ship to ship boarding.

Is Privateer like Elite?
Because ASCII Elite would not be too far from C64 Elite. Nyuk nyuk nyuk.
Seriously, though, I love Elite.

Well try it and decide. I never played Elite so I can't comment on that. It has a lot of trading/combat/missions/equipment and stuff.

There is a budding Lets Play up on youtube too.

Found this awesome sci-fi roguelike in development called Prospector:
http://prospector.wikia.com/wiki/Pro...

It's a bit like Elite/Privateer, but mostly like Starflight or Star Control. One roguelike map is 2d space where you fly a ship around looking for interesting bits and killing or running from pirates. After scanning planets in that view you can land on them and walk around randomly generated planet surfaces with your away team. Lots of exploration and monster killing on the planets. After exploring you sell everything you've mapped, picked up or inspected to the main base and go out again for more. You hire, equip, heal and train your crew a bit like Starflight. I'm still learning the system, but it's pretty deep.

That sounds totally sweet.

It's pretty interesting, but very brutal for a beginner. When accidentally bumping into planet critters with a newbie party, things go from fine to dead very quickly. That's a roguelike for you, though. Big learning curve.

Argh! Crawl 0.6.1 came out and I fire it up with a MDFi. The RNG god was sooo good I should have known something bad would be coming.

By level 7 I had 23 AC with dwarf plate mail, +2 helmet, +2 gloves w/+3 str, and boots. Amulet of the gourmand, poison resistance, sustain abilities, tons of wands, +2 mace of crushing and a +2, +2 dagger of draining. Mutation of +1 str, -1 dex, and breathe fire. I'm laying waste to everything - trolls in 3-4 shots, hordes of orcs and wizards are no problem, even Sigmund went down like my prom date. Need I mention the gold dragon hide that was on floor 5?

So what happens? I'm checking out runed weapons in the Temple and I get a dagger of distortion! that I found on 7th floor! Unwielding it banishes my poor dwarfy straight into the Abyss and instant rape soup. Crawl givith and crawl taketh away.

I picked up Izuna for the DS on the (super) cheap and have been enjoying this rather simplified roguelike. After you die you get to keep your XP, though you lose everythign else, so I suppose I will actually see the end of this game if I put some time into it.

Really, it's just nice not to feel slaughtered all the time, though in the end I prefer the challenge of an actual "hardcore" roguelike, but this is a nice respite.

"Zombie apocalypse"-themed roguealike:

Rogue Survivor

Even though it's in the "alpha" stage (of course, many games of this type are in that state perpetually anyway), it's still a lot of fun.

Crawl is up to 0.7 now. The new tiles look really nice.

Looks nice. I hadn't installed Crawl on my new PC, so now is as good a time as any!

Thanks for the link to Prospector. It looks really neat! I'm going to dive in sometime soon.

Crawl tournament starts Sunday! Is there going to be a GWJ team?

https://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/t...

My fondness for Crawl is matched only by my surprising ineptitude. But, if you can't find five people who are actually decent to fill out a team, I'd be willing to give it a shot.

I am God-awful at most Roguelikes, but damn if I don't love 'em. I'll be playing a ton of Crawl in the next month, I can already tell. If we make a team of well-meaning but incompetent GWJers, I'm in.

Wow, I've never looked at Crawl before (though I've played other Roguelikes, my previous favorite being good old Angband), but it's quite impressive!

Hilarious. I'd be happy to single-handedly cause us to lose, why not?

I really ought to give Crawl a chance. I've never played it, but I am a huge Nethack fan. Does anyone have any suggestions for someone like me looking to get into Crawl?

Just hit the link Exit....Bear posted above and grab the installer. This new version has a pretty sweet tutorial, followed by a 'hints' mode that helps familiarize you with Crawl-specific stuff. If you're an old hand at Nethack, I think you'll get the gist of it pretty quick.

Also, am I the only person who kind of despises tiles in my Roguelikes?

Crawl has a very nice console mode for you.

Crawl has a very nice console mode for you. :)

Also playing without tiles is much more inconspicuous when you are bored at work.

There's a online tiles interface version also. It's not perfect but it does the job if you're only used to playing the tiled version like I am.

John Harris at GameSetWatch has a great monthlyish column on roguelikes and has a series of articles on Crawl if you're just starting out.

The wiki is really helpful for figuring what gods to pick out and how to handle the different monsters and uniques

KidC, Ferret, necroyeti, and anyone else interested: Let's form a clan, why the hell not? We can have 6 people. My CAO name is the same as here, "gbuchold". I'll declare myself captain by virtue of, uh, posting this right now. So all you have to do to join the clan is put "# TEAMCAPTAIN gbuchold" at the top of your rcfile, and tell me your CAO name so I can add you to mine. Also we need a clan name. "GWJ-Crawl" will do for now, but I want to hear suggestions - the clans don't lock down until the 15th, but the sooner the better.

Sure, why not? The mighty (useless) Ferret happily joins the clan, which I helpfully suggest we name "GWJ: Lair or Bust"

I think I've got it setup right. I'm sure there's a great way to check, but I haven't found it yet. I guess you'd need to include my CAO name (also Ferret) in your file first anyway.

Been playing a bit of prospector. Its fun! My only gripe is that its very slow to ramp up. What you should be doing in the beginning is stick to "safe" planets. Planets with no life on them planets with breathable atmospheres etc. This will build up the cash you need to start to expand.

What's the roguelike to get on iphone? 100 Rogues?

gbuchold, sounds good! I think I'm set up, my name on CAO is IanDavid. Right now I'm at 110 tourney and 4 team points so hopefully those will transfer over when you add me.

Oh, for anyone who needs it: a nice FAQ on how to setup for online play.

I'm signed up for the team now, gbuchold. I should show up as Farscry.
