360 Metal Gear Solid Rising announced...starring Raiden?!

Why is every Metal Gear thread on the internet filled to the rafters with people who are, at best, apathetic towards the Metal Gear series? I don't come into your Halo and Call of Duty wank-festivities and wax nostalgic about the days when games were about more than just teabagging the freshest corpse.

I'm groin-grabbingly excited for this. It'll probably be the story of when Raiden saved Sonny from the Patriots, since they just sort of glossed over that whole thing in MGS4. Of course, if that was the case, then I would imagine they would have called it Metal Gear Raiden. I suspect that this is secretly a cross-over with Capcom where Snake and Raiden are trapped in a mall filled to the rafters with zombies.

Raiden vs Dante!

Capcom already lent Dante to Atlus for SMT Nocturne....it could happen again!

Raiden saving Sonny from the patriots would be pretty awesome, especially considering the fact that I thought Sonny was one of the best additions to the cast in MGS4. I see her as a beacon of hope in a dark dystopian future. More info about Sonny's backstory would be awesome, and kicking ass as cyborg ninja Raiden would also be awesome. Two great tastes that taste great together.

This got a new trailer at E3, which looks awesome!

Free-style cutting of anything? Yes, please.

EDIT: In an interview, the developers said the game takes place between MGS 2 and MGS 4, bridging the gap in the story and explaining how Raiden got to be the way he is.

Would that be concurrent to Metal Gear Solid 3, then? (I don't know anything about Metal Gear Solid.)

Timeline-wise, it goes 3, 1, 2, Rising, 4

WTH? That's got a DRM takedown message saying it's Comcast's content?

Ugh, stupid comcast.

Here's the Joystiq version, but you have to follow a link:

Ah, that's the same one from MS's press conference.

Now a collaboration between Kojima productions... and Platinum games. Just watched the video and it's definitely not a Snake MGS, .

I swore off this franchise after nearly falling asleep at the beginning of MGS3.

Now the Bayonetta team is making one.

Crap.

Holy sh*t, Platinum is working on this? Damn, that's good to hear. I'm really, really interested now.

What video were you talking about, Scratched?

I was interested in this before, but now...

Hype level increased X10

The VGA trailer has leaked apparently. I saw the post on Kotaku but their videos/galleries haven't been working for me lately.

I'm sure you can find it elsewhere if you want.

Edit: this neogaf thread has a couple download links, I got the bottom one. It's being removed from most major media outlets as far as I can tell.

The name's been changed to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Revengeance! Don't ever change, Japan.

Revengeance? The heck?

Stupid name but it looks like Vanquish + Sword + Crazy Kojima Story.

I'm in.

Oh, I'm in. Kojima does crazy well by himself, this should be great

The gameplay reminded me a lot of No More Hereos. Huh, I guess Suda was busy. Platinum's not a bad choice though.

Transfarring.

Put Platinum games on anything and I'm instantly interested. Like Vanquish the video all that compelling (or understandable) but the gameplay will no doubt turn out to be amazing.

That saddens me, but I totally get it. The first two hours of Snake Eater, I felt like, "Yeah, it's Metal Gear in a jungle and that's cool, but why is it so boring?" Then a dude came out of sky hanging from a cloud of bees and it turned out to be the greatest game in the entire series. Giving up before that point (if that is indeed where you gave up) means you haven't really seen what Snake Eater is all about. Unless it was after that point, and then maybe the series just isn't for you. But I digress.

Revengeance is the greatest title in the history of this medium.

Man, Snake Eater was my favorite of them all!

I already kind of didn't like MGS2 (particularly the last hour or so), and a slow-ass start to 3 killed it. Sorry guys.

But hey! I'll probably play this one.

Snake Eater is a masterpiece of gaming. MGS4 is too, to a slightly lesser extent.

Back on topic, this looks like it's going to be a fun spinoff, the only thing I am apprehensive about is that it's supposedly taking place after MGS4 now.

Spoiler:

Didn't Raiden un-cyborg himself at the end? And decide to live happy ever after with Rose and their kid? And since it's post MGS4 you know they're gonna put something in there about what Old Snake is up to.. it looks like the whole PMC/Metal Gear stuff is still going on, so it looks like MGS4 didn't really wrap things up as we thought it would.

I'm glad to see some MGS fannery in here. It seems like every forum I read is full of nothing but haters.

You obviously missed the thread about the HD Collection. Lots of love for MGS in there, even if it is only a few posts.

+1. Incidentally, you can still transfarr using the HD Collection, just FYI.

I took one look at this and thought it looked incredibly dumb.

Fair enough. Just saying. MGS3 is the anti-MGS2.

I finally got around to watching the trailer. It doesn't look like a Metal Gear game, but it does look like a Platinum game, so I'm all over it. It looks like it splits the distance (har har) between Bayonetta and Vanquish.

Also, a couple fun tidbits. First, the game was effectively cancelled until Platinum took over production. Apparently, Kojima Productions had the story and basic concept of "cut anything," but then they completely ran out of ideas and couldn't figure out how to make a good game out of what they had. However, Platinum expressed interest in what they had, so development was handed over to them rather than can the whole project.

Second, the game's in a new engine. It's using Platinum's in-house engine used for Bayonetta and Vanquish which, based on what I've seen in Vanquish, is a pretty sweet engine.

For some reason the more I think about this game, the more it sort of depresses me. Metal Gear, along with Zelda is one of the few great franchises that isn't being diluted by an influx of spinoff titles. Maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety.
