Summer Concerts

8 days to Eagles then about another 5 weeks till Bon Jovi, both at Winnipeg stadium, so any reviews of the of the two shows.

Iron Maiden was here last Friday. Rush to come in late September and play their 'Moving Pictures' album straight through.

Faith No More in Williamsburg in four weeks! I am so looking forward to this..

I saw Iron Maiden / Dream Theater last night in Denver, and man did they both kick ass. DT is a tough act to follow, but the crowd went bonkers as Maiden hit the stage. Their new stage effects are ah... Out of this world. Even if you're not a Maiden fan, or even a heavy prog rock fan, you owe it to yourself to check out this tour.

Iron Maiden KILLS live.

I was suppose to see U2 in a couple weeks but that's been delayed till next year, I have Bon Jovi at the end of July and also have the Star Wars Concert but probably will have a couple of others coming up but who knows.

I'm going to BOTH the Iron Maiden/Dream Theater and Rush "Time Machine" tours. On back to back weekends. In Toronto. July's going to rock.

Also, Zac Brown Band. Because even we metalheads can appreciate sic'ing him on a chicken now and then.

Broken Social Scene and Pavement at Toronto Island this weekend. Supposed to thunderstorm. I will probably fall in some mud.

3 days, 120 bands, all within walking distance of each other in downtown Raleigh, NC, including Public Enemy, Broken Social Scene, and Panda Bear.

I'm talking about Hopscotch Music Festival, people. I expect to see you all there.

Hmm, September might be fall, though. I'll repost when the Fall Concerts thread starts.

I am going to Tool next Friday - should be a great show.

American Idol tour starts in July!

I'd like to thank Iron Maiden for not coming to the Twin Cities on their second consecutive tour. Really, guys, that's great. I could go to Chicago, but I'm not sure I want to haul six hours for a show.

Saw The Futureheads last Saturday night. Totally amazing! Frightened Rabbit back in May, and Los Campesinos! and The XX just before them in April.

May hit up Pitchfork just to see LCD Soundsystem. Or I may just go see Titus Andronicus the night before they play at Pitchfork.

Rushing back from last day of GenCon to catch last day of Lollapalooza to see Yeasayer, maybe Frightened Rabbit again, Temper Trap, The National and Arcade Fire. May get back in time to also see Mumford & Sons.

Then looking ahead through August, I'm considering Maps & Atlases, Thao & Mirah with Most of All, We Were Promised Jetpacks, We Are Scientists, and/or Tokyo Police Club. Plus whatever Secret Asian Man is thinking about going to.

Waiting for Limp Bizkit in September. Let's see what this new album is made of.

Maybe, maybe going to see Placebo in July. Oh, wait, I'll be in England. Forget it.

Thats a tough call. If you aren't working the next day, I'd say go for it. They had a good reception among the staff at the NASA Space Center last week, which is pretty cool.

Maiden has added a 4th guitarist for the tour.

No dates in the DC Metro area yet, but the minute Devo announces some I'm there.

(They released their first album in 20 years yesterday and are touring the States this summer.)

Aug 12 Primus/Golgo Bordello
Aug 16 Rush

I was going to go to Tool, but both shows sold out in like thirty minutes.

And it's not summer but I'm going to see Roger Waters' performance of The Wall in November. So stoked!

Just took my daughter to her very first rock concert last week when we saw The Black Keys at The Pageant here in St. Louis. Her first concert was supposed to be Kings of Leon in July at our local amphitheater, but I lucked into free tickets, and her begging furiously to go kept me from bringing a friend instead. She is going to KoL with one of my wife's friends.

Then in August, I am taking her to Rush, who is another of her favorite bands. Not a bad summer, and pretty awesome taste for a a girl turning 13 in July. Because money grows from trees, she is also begging to see Cage the Elephant coming up soon, as well.

I'd like to take my wife to Tom Petty this summer, but have not decided to spend the cash yet.

To resurrect this, last night was opening night of the Rush tour in Albuquerque. My days of obsessive Rush-fandom are behind me (I flew to Nashville for opening night of the R30 tour and have several friends who were in ABQ last night), but I still love their sense of humor. Here's the intro video for the show. Hilarious.

Saw them last week - what a disappointing show. It was like Maynard was just phoning it in.

That was awesome.

"but it still feels like summer in Vegas " concert:

Sweet mother of God - I want to see Belle & Sebastian so bad!

Highly unlikely that I can make it to Vegas, but hopefully they will have some midwestern dates!

Just got back from Glastonbury. Lovely weather and a great lineup, managed to see The Flaming Lips, Stevie Wonder, The Dead Weather, Grizzly Bear, Faithless and loads of other great bands. Full lineup was pretty impressive with over 600 bands/artists playing on 45 stages:

Saw Tool at the eX in St. Paul last week. It was, to quote Nathan Explosion, 'A motherf*ckin' laser light show!'

PS: Maynard is dreamy.

This weekend's Iron Maiden concert in Toronto may have ruined me on live shows forever. No way anyone could ever, ever, EVER top the Bruce.

I heard nothing but good things from friends who were also at that show.

It was so epic that I didn't even care that some teenager shoved past me and stole my tour t-shirt while I was headbanging. After all, the joke's on him: He's the one who stole a baby-doll Iron Maiden tee. Hope that works out well for him.

An 8-foot tall Eddie got into a guitar fight with Dave Murray, and then Bruce did a pike jump off six feet of stage set while sustaining a giant eleventy-billion-bar note. Seriously, I love Rush more than any other act in the world, but their mascot has yet to do battle with any band members.

FNM tonight.

Edit: Faith No More was truly amazing - it was an outdoor concert in Williamsburg, with the Manhattan skyline behind us. The band had their act together perfectly - snarking with the crowd, Mike Patton bending notes and screaming like a banshee. Rahzel came out for a couple of songs, and was amazing. I'm hoarse as hell from screaming, and I think I sweated off about 5 pounds between the 98 degree heat, the headbanging and the moshing, and I couldn't be happier!

If it ain't Tool, most of the bands/artists I would pay to see are no longer around in the "active/preferred" file in one form or another: Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Type O Negative, Alice in Chains. Nothing band-wise really tugs my yarn these days.

Went to Summerfest this weekend.

Great: Scorpions, The Hold Steady, Sata Watkins (of Nickel Creek fame).

Good: Dar Williams, Katzenjammer (a crazy all-girl rock group from Norway).

Horrid: Counting Crows. The concert was billed as a half hour of Augustana and an hour and a half of Crows. Instead, Counting Crows played nine original songs and three covers over the course of two hours and kept leaving the stage to let not only Augustana but this HORRIBLE rap/rock douche bag named NOTAR* play/horribly rap some of their songs. At one point in the night, Duritz had to stop a song because two people in the crows were fighting, at which point NOTAR came out to ask if they were fighting because his previous song had got them too riled up.

About 15 minutes later, they had to stop during "Hanginaround" because the singer from Augustana was given a verse to sing and he couldn't remember the words. By the end of the concert, the crowd had thinned out by half. Modest Mouse was playing at the stage next door, and I wish I could go back and pick them instead.

There were highlights such as an extended rendition of "A Long December" and a cover of "Cecilia" but that only served as a reminder to how horrible the rest of the concert was. Do yourself a favor and if you see these guys on their "Traveling Circus and Medicine Show" tour, stay VERY far away.

* Who is, not surprisingly, signed to Adam Duritz's record label.
