Fallout: New Vegas - Fall 2010

Wow! Fallout 3 on the PC looks much much better than Fallout 3 on the PS3. With the draw distance set to the max, it sure is amazing crawling out of the vault and seeing the destroyed landscape. I've already got my 24.99 out of the game. Can't wait to get to the DLC and then for New Vegas to come out.

I really would only want the vault 13 suit and canteen.

I'm sure there are a great many people who agree. Yet more evidence that GameStop is working hard to get the "best" pre-order bonuses.

Sweet. Looks good. It definitely seems much more colorful and playful in spots which is nice. Definitely a different feel than Fallout 3. I think the team is definitely going for a different type of game.

If they make it like Fallout 2 which I suspect they will, there will probably be a lot more characters in the towns. There weren't really that many even in the populated areas like Megaton and Rivet City in FO3 while in FO2 the towns were well populated.

Being in San Diego for the past few weeks has also given me a bit of the desert feel with bright blue skies and yellow grass. I know Nevada is a bit different, but it's definitely a different feel from the East Coast and I think this game nails it. As areas of the country, even today the East Coast seems more old and dreary than California and Nevada where everything is a bit newer and flashier.

Looks good. I have to admit I like the fact that they've added some colour. I know it's a post apocalyptic landscape, but it's nice to see something other than brown, gray and black.

Looks like Bozar is back.

Looks great, Fallout 3 with color, I'm sold.

I'm interested to see how much of a living city Vegas is, I like the idea of exploring a city that was largely untouched by the war.

Looks good, I still need to play the first one:)

The GOTY 360 version is on my pile!

Launch dates:

North America: October 19th
Europe: October 22nd

Why is the series called fallout? You have minimal interaction with fallout itself.

Ever see some water? Water has fallout in it and I hear it's important to some people.

Has any developer mentioned why they called it New Vegas, yet? I'm sure it's centered around Vegas but for a full-priced game it probably has a lot of places outside of Vegas, too. Probably a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with Vegas. I'm assuming it's on par with Fallout 3, yet Fallout 3 was Fallout 3, not Fallout: D.C.

Maybe they just didn't feel right calling it Fallout 4 and Las Vegas was at the top of the list? Why not Fallout: Mojave? That would have more meaning to Fallout veterans.

Talk about nitpicking.

I pre-ordered on Steam. The Steam version includes the "Mad Max" pre-order bonus set, with the leather jacket and shotgun. Yes, please.

I read ages ago that Fallout 4 was being reserved for Bethesda, so I guess Fallout 3.5 wasn't as catchy

I think you are right. I remember reading that Bethesda reserves each full sequal number for themselves.

Well at least with Zenimax and Bethesda we probably don't have to worry about it being titled F4llout.

Don't give them the idea. They did do "OblIVion", which at least is not the most obnoxious "clever" sequel spelling.

Yes. That would be... really... bad.

Excuse me, I need to register a domain name.

...What do you mean they're not case-sensitive!?

That went right over my head all these years...I'm actually amused by that one.

Yup, I like that one because it genuinely works: the title screen opens with the IV before pulling back and fading in the rest of the letters.

That was good. Taking it too far—F4llout—would be bad.

Thanks to this discussion, the Oblivion title theme is now playing in my head. Jeremy Soule writes amazing soundtracks.

Shacknews is covering all the pre-order bonuses:

I know this has been said a million times, but I guess I need to make it one million and one-- I EFFING hate pre-order "bonuses." No matter what you do or who you buy from, you're getting screwed in some way.

Don't worry. We'll be able to pay for it later. $60 couldn't possibly cover the costs of all those awesome pre-order items, especially for a small indie start-up like Zenimax.

Or you could just get the PC version and mod it.

Just sayin'.

But DO we get these things? Even the chance to buy them? Not that I want to, really, but it's the principle of the thing. Look at RDR-- different outfits, "warhorses," etc. I've already beaten the game, and I've yet to see any of this stuff available. Maybe it will be someday, but who knows.

Seems like pretty useless bonuses. You can build your own city, add whores, put in light sabers, change the moon to the death star, and 1000 other things through mods. I rather have a luchbox, nuka-cola, or something along those lines. Unless this game isn't supporting mods which would be odd since it is using the same engine.

From my understanding it's because New Vegas is more of an incremental improvement than a full-on sequel, in the tradition of the Vice City/San Andreas GTA games or the constant stream of Street Fighter revisions. New Vegas uses the same engine as F3 and, from the look of the trailers that have been released, a lot of the same animation, skins, and textures with minor tweaks and additions here and there. Not that I'm complaining. I'm still going to take that week off from work.

Console users can't do those things. They have to rely on pre-orders.

Personally I'm not fussed by pre-order bonuses any more. I've come to the realisation (thanks to the ME2 Collectors Edition) that the stuff you get is easily surpassed within the first few minutes of the game anyway. It only works on people who think they are somehow missing out on some fabulous new toy which they need to save the galaxy. Really, don't worry about it. If it was that good, it would be in the game already as don't you think the developers would want people playing with the awesome toys?

Personally if I worked on this awesome new weapon and it was only available to a few people, I'd be quite annoyed. I'd rather have the maximum exposure to the awesome stuff. So logic would dictate that all the stuff that was either going to be cut or just some random crap gets added as "Special Pre-order bonus!!!"

Since I love to be contrary, I will say that the Mass Effect 2 "Blackstorm" heavy weapon (only available through Gamestop pre-order) has a balance of power and ammunition not available on any other heavy weapon. It's considered one of, if not the, best option for most situations.

Of course, ME2 doesn't have an editor.

That collector's heavy laser thing was my heavy weapon of choice.

I am on board with BS - I buy new games, so I get the pre-order bonuses, but I rarely, if ever, use them.

Although I loved my Dragon Armor from DA:O in ME2, so maybe I am full of it.

The second part of the New Vegas fan questions interview is online. It contains things like this:

Are Bottlecaps the source of currency or will it be poker chips?
From Rob via Facebook

JS: Bottlecaps are the main currency in the Mojave Wasteland. Bottlecaps are a water-backed currency controlled and regulated by NCR merchant caravans. The caravan houses conspired to re-introduce the currency when traders lost faith in NCR money. This loss of faith was the result of the NCR moving from a gold-backed currency to fiat currency due to repeated attacks on NCR gold reserves by the Brotherhood of Steel. Though the transition helped stabilize NCR's economy, NCR dollars are devalued compared to bottlecaps and even more devauled when compared with the third form of currency: Legion coins. Caesar's Legion mints silver and gold coins from captured pre-war material. Despite the NCR's running conflict with the Legion, merchants and citizens throughout the Mojave Wasteland accept all three forms of currency.

Poker chips are used by all functional casinos. Each casino has its own chips that must be used for gambling. Players can exchange any form of currency for chips and can receive their payout in any form of currency. Mr. House doesn't let the ongoing war get in the way of potential profits.

I must say, it's really cool that they put so much thought into something that most players probably won't think twice about.
