Fallout: New Vegas - Fall 2010

He's dumb.

I for one welcome our new steam overlords.

After the horrors of trying to get F3 to update over GFWL this is brilliant news.

Going to miss the extra 1000 gamerscore though....

Steam is such a nice program, to me, that I don't even consider it DRM.

I like Steam, but I agree that there is a big difference between activating a product on Steam and activating it through the game or small program on the disc that just does activation.

Steam is essentially a store and an ad channel. Forcing a customer to install an application that is for all purposes not part of the game is a bit silly.

I think that Telltale games does a good job with DRM. They give you two ways to "activate" the product, by entering a key, or by logging in to the launcher which contacts the internet. You never have to install another application. There are ads in the launcher for other Telltale products, but I don't see this as any different from putting ads in game manuals or in the game installer.

Does the Steam activation prevent you from giving the game to a friend? Does it force you to sign up to Steam? There are trade-offs with purchasing a game on Steam; you get to download the game from their servers, but only one account can access the content. Getting games like Battlefield Bad Company at retail removes the account restriction, but doesn't provide the download benefit.

I guess at the end of the day, they are making Steam the only way to get the game on PC, which is fine, but I understand people who prefer having the choices.

It sounds sounds like you're being facetious, but I think you're being sincere since I feel the exact same way.

I'll be happy now to have the option to purchase expansions for it without having to buy MS Spacebucks.

I am being sincere. And don't call me Shirley.

Do it right:

I miss good old deadpan comedy delivery like that.

100% confirmed in an interview that GFLW is out.

Personally I don't have a major problem with GFWL as it's always worked for me and the games I've used with it (Fallout 3, Batman AA, DOW2) have all worked fine without any hitches. But being steam only actually makes me happy. I was going to get it on steam anyway (as aussie retailers still charge out of their butts) and having the extra benefits of not needing stupid space bucks is quite nice.

I will kinda miss the extra 1000 to the Gamer score, but in all honesty, that's becoming less and less of a concern these days.

Lol, it's all your fault with your uber score, surpassing mine and demoralizing me

Actually it's just one of those things. Ever since I had that rant a while back about achievements, I just haven't felt the need for them. I'm still happy to get them, but they aren't going to convince me to get a game on the 360 vs pc. I'm liking my PC more and more too. Just feel that it is a superior platform to the 360 and I can do so much more with it. I'll still keep ther 360 for arcade games and racing games, but everything else I think will be PC from now on if I have the choice.

Back on topic: the ability for the PC version to be modded is a definite draw card.

... why else would you buy a Gamebryo-infused Bethesda-sponsored game?

If you don't look for mods, even on day 1, there might be something severely wrong with you.

Well then there's something definitely wrong with me. I won't be using mods until I've finished it at least once. Personally I want the experience as the developers intend. After that I will tweak what I want.

The mods I use in Fallout 3 at the moment are mainly visual improvements. Like the hi-res weapons and armour. Then I use a couple of tweak mods which allow me to repair using similar weapons and scrap metal, and EVE (which is simply amazing) and an underground bunker which allows me to put my weapons on a display wall (truly the best invention ever).

That's the same with me, I fully agree but I plan to pick up the 360 version first than the PC version eventually.

I treat every Bethesda release as a framework to build mods on, still haven't finished Fallout 3, but I've logged probably weeks of real time in the DC wastes tooling around with mods. I expect Vegas to be the same.

New Vegas is still made by Obsidian, isn't it?

Yep, real money FTW.

More to the point... by the same guys who did Fallout 1 and 2. So yes, yes it is.

I was thinking more along the 'quality of product' line, obsidian don't have a stellar reputation there. Even the bethesda oblivion/fallout releases were vastly improved by modding

Well I agree, and then I don't. On the one side, I'm glad these aren't the same people who made that espionage rpg (of which i dare not mention the name). But I liked KOTOR 2 and the fact that they made fallout 1 and 2 and they're using the same engine as Fallout 3... I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I hope I'm not disappointed. Only time will tell.

Even when you think of their classics like the first two Fallout games, "polished" isn't exactly the first word to come to mind. (-: And they had similarly uneven results with KotOR 2, which was also based off someone else's engine and framework, so even that fact that Bethesda's already done the heavy lifting isn't a guarantee of quality. It's sad to see that Obsidian has kind of become the Western RPG B-team, making off-year sequels while the A teams are busy.

I'm still hopeful despite all that, of course, because, dude, more Fallout.

Word.

So... with the preorder up on Steam today, Fallout 3 GOTY Edition is 50% off at $24.99. Should I buy it? I played it on PS3 to the extent that I got the platinum trophy. It's an awesome game. Now I have a kick-ass PC, and I haven't played the DLC. I don't think I'll pre-order New Vegas until closer to the release date.

I sure would like to play fallout with the graphics cranked and fewer crashes/glitches (Thanks PS3 )

Shacknews is covering all the pre-order bonuses:

The Classic Pack, available when you pre-order through GameStop, contains:

* Armored Vault 13 Suit - Extensively patched up and dotted with piecemeal armor, this outfit is an homage to the classic ending of the original Fallout.
* Vault 13 Canteen - This handy device is useful for staving off dehydration and providing a small amount of healing in the Mojave Wasteland.
* Weathered 10mm Pistol - A well-worn 10mm pistol that packs an extra punch despite its modest size.
* 5 Stimpaks - Food and water are good for long-term healing, but when the fighting is fierce, Stimpaks help keep Wastelanders upright.

The Tribal Pack, available when you pre-order through Amazon, contains:

* Tribal Raiding Armor - Pieced together from scraps of armor, this outfit provides protection without impacting mobility.
* Broad Machete - This heavy-bladed melee weapon does high damage against limbs and can quickly deal out a flurry of attacks.
* 5 Bleak Venom doses - Useful on any Melee Weapon, Bleak Venom makes short of work of most living targets.
* 10 Throwing Spears - If you would like to silently pin an enemy's head to a wall, Throwing Spears are the way to do it.

The Caravan Pack, available when you pre-order through Steam and Walmart, contains:

* Lightweight Leather Armor - This hand-modified suit of leather armor reduces its overall weight without impacting its ability to protect.
* Sturdy Caravan Shotgun - Despite its rough appearance, this Caravan Shotgun will reliably fire 20 gauge shells until the Brahmin come home.
* 4 Repair Kits - Useful for repairing any outfit or weapon, Repair Kits are a valuable tool for any caravaner.
* Binoculars The Mojave Wasteland is a dangerous place, but with these trusty Binoculars youll be able to spot trouble coming.

The Mercenary Pack, available when you pre-order through Best Buy, contains:

* Lightweight Metal Armor - Modified for long-range travel, this Metal Armor sacrifices some protection for mobility and overall weight.
* Mercenarys Grenade Rifle - Though similar to other 40mm Grenade Rifles in the Mojave Wasteland, this model has a faster reload cycle.
* 3 Super Stimpaks - When you absolutely, positively, need to keep your blood inside your body, Super Stimpaks fix you up in no time.
* 3 Doctors Bags - Mercenaries and broken limbs go together like Iguana-on-a-Stick and Nuka Cola. Thankfully, these Doctors Bags take a bit of sting out of the inevitable crushed skull.

I'm hoping that either all these items are also available in game without the pre-order or on PC via console code or mod.

I really would only want the vault 13 suit and canteen.

Also, off to buy PC FO3 GOTY.

Grenade Rifle? Throwing Spears? I'm excited.

Well, I pulled the trigger on Fallout 3 GOTY Edition for $24.99. I could use another playthrough plus a run through the DLC (which I haven't got to play yet). Definitely going to wait on the pre-order of New Vegas for now.

Me too. I can finally start trying out all of those wonderful mods too.

24.99 is too good a deal to pass up.
