Hell, yeah, dude. Entombed is killer.

Oops, I didn't read the original post until now.

As a suggestion to the original poster, I would seriously recommend checking out some Edge of Sanity or Entombed. They might be along the lines of what you're looking for.

For Edge of Sanity - I'd try the Until Eternity Ends EP to see if they're your style, and possibly Spectral Sorrows as well. Crimson is *excellent* but it's metal prog - one 45 minute long song, and I don't know if you're into that.

A sampling:

For Entombed, I'd check out either the Wolverine Blues or Morning Star cds to start with. If you like those, you'll be set.

I'm always taken aback by the sheer variety of "metal." With that in mind, here's a few very different styles that I dig.

Something I've been digging for a year or so is Falkenbach. They're viking metal, but with a stronger emphasis on the viking bit than other bands I've heard with the label. I've also never run into anyone else that has heard of them. I generally don't like bands that have only-growl vocals, and this guy does a nice mix of clean and rough.

Beyond Twilight's album, "For the Love and the Art of the Making" is one of my favorites. This is a few of the tracks. It's a concept album that is one long song over 43 or so tracks, 37 minutes long. It's very prog, so if you're not into that you might not want to bother.

I recently "found" a band called Slough Feg, with a pretty large catalog, and have been devouring it since. The closest comparison I can make is earlier Iron Maiden. This is probably my favorite song currently, though it changes every few weeks.

Finally, there's a super-unknown band I'm into called The Holy Angel Fire. They're something like 70s metal meets punk, very hard to classify. This is the link to their first album on CDbaby.com. You can sample all the songs. It's super catchy stuff, while still being complex enough. Considering playtime:dollars, it's probably the best purchase I made in 2009 music-wise.

I'd also love some feedback, good or bad, on any of these bands. I find people in person are very resistant to trying out new music, so I very rarely have anyone to discuss it with.

I recently finally got into "The Greater of Two Evils", by Anthrax - the album where the John Bush-fronted Anthrax re-recorded songs from before he joined the band. Bought it about a year and a half ago, listened to a few songs, wasn't really blown away. Maybe two weeks ago I gave it another shot, and ended up listening to it three or four times in a row over the course of a week. Pretty sure this has put to rest any debate in my mind about who Anthrax's best singer was. Now if only they hadn't lost him by being such g** d**** f***t*rds when it comes to singers, and personnel in general.

Now I'm listening to Symphony X's "Paradise Lost". The riffage and everything is fantastic, and I appreciate the high concept, but the actual songwriting, especially lyrically and the terrible choruses, leaves me pretty lukewarm. It's good for a listen to check out some fantastic riffing, but I can't see myself ever really getting into it and throwing up the goat Dio-style, you know?

Most powermetal bands have issues with overcheesing the lyrics, and they're no different. I'm not sure why this occurs, but it is undeniable. I'm willing to put up with it to a certain point.

EDIT: Even if you think the show and or videos are silly, definitely check out their albums. Bloodrocuted is one of my favorite songs.

Oh yes! I prefer "Mermaider." In all seriousness, the Dethklok albums are really great metal albums. I know many who are surprised when they find out it's a cartoon band for a tv show. My wife is very picky about her metal and she loves the Dethklok albums.

I'll chime in and support those who listed:
High On Fire
Mastodon
Sepultura
Fear Factory
Nailbomb

My little contribution would be Ministry. Al and company always destroy.

@Rexneron
You are my new hero for dropping bands like Isis, Earth and Sunn O))), even though they do not fit what MrDevil909 was looking for.

Blind_Evil: I am wearing a Dragonforce t-shirt that I got at their concert, so cheese may not be the issue. I think my problems with Symphony X are bad lyrics, boring choruses, and singing straight out of the 80s. But the riffing is rockin'!

I know the OP said he liked thrashier stuff, but he really should check out Kyuss.

I thought about posting this in the 'Post a video' thread, but decided it was more appropriate here.

Members from each band of The Big Four Tour (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax) performing Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?" in Sofia, Bulgaria

Dave Lombardo was the only Slayer member playing (no idea why the rest of the band chose not to), but for me, the only real notable part is seeing Dave Mustaine performing live on stage with James and Lars, which hasn't happened since 1983.

Arise!

Anyone going (gone) to any metal shows this summer? These are on my agenda right now:

Rockstar Mayhem Fest - for Trivium, In Flames, and Unearth.

Amon Amarth - the Viking metal band is doing a tour with no support; they are playing their latest (awesome) album in its entirety, as well as a bunch of older songs.

Opeth - in early October, the perfect way to kick off my month of spookiness, in which I try to read/watch various horror media like zombie movies, Eerie comics, etc.

And I need to check out The Black Dahlia Murder and Bring Me The Horizon to see if I want to attend their shows. I sadly did not check out Revocation in time to want to catch them last month, but I've really been enjoying their music since then.

I'm really scared about Opeth's new album. On one hand I'm glad they're trying something new with their sound as it did get rather same-y, but it could also mean this is the transition album that is just gonna blow. Or it could be amazing. So, I've got that knife edge thing going on. I'm interested to hear it, but scared.

I would say to check out the new Anthrax single, Fight 'Em 'Till You Can't, but it's not that good.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I was never a big fan of the death vox in their stuff anyway. I think this could be a really positive direction for them.

I haven't heard any of Opeth's new album; is there something out?

I am a huuuuge fan of Opeth with death vocals. When I started my metal renaissance a couple years ago, I couldn't listen to Opeth because of them. I guess the conversion is complete!

I'm optimistic about the next album because I like Watershed so much, though I'll say that my favorite Opeth songs are the rocking songs with death vocals. Songs like Burden and Porcelein Heart are good, but they aren't the reason I'm listening.

I need to check out the new albums by In Flames and Unearth before I see them, and it looks like the new Trivium drops right before I see them. All I want is a follow-up to Shogun, but supposedly they were aiming closer to Ascendancy, which I'm not as wild about.

Apparently, there are a couple official videos for new Trivium songs, but they can't be viewed on iPhones or iPads. That makes sense.

Dear Marketing Morons,
I hardly browse on "traditional" computers anymore, except at work, where YouTube is blocked.
Sincerely,
The demographic you want to sell to.

I'm not much of an Anthrax fan, but I really loved Only when it came out. I always preferred Bush to Belladonna, so ... And it never hurts to have a great drummer.

Man, I don't think I ever actually saw that video before.

The death vocals were always my least favorite part of the band, but I thought they added a nice counterpoint to the clean vocals. I won't miss them much.

What video is that, garion? I just get the YouTube "no" sign that I now take it means the video is blocked for mobile. Which is the dumbest idea in history.

The aforementioned Only.

No, just interviews.

Only is awesome; that album's tour was my first metal concert. Anthrax was awesome!

I heard that James Hetfield once said he would like to have written "Only", and described it as a perfect song. Hard to disagree.

Marketing Morons UPDATE: I have now downloaded the Trivium content you didn't want me to stream using the Jailbroken app MxTube. I hope you're happy.

And seriously...what is the big deal? I'm buying the album and seeing them in concert either way. Why antagonize mobile web surfers?

I don't think I'd go that far, but now that I've gone back and listened to Sound of White Noise I rather like the album a lot. It's not the most blistering Anthrax album, but since I prefer a 90's grunge sound to an 80's thrash sound, this album continues to sound somewhat more relevant than Anthrax's earlier stuff.

In a lot of ways it comes down to vocals for me and, liek I said earlier, Bush > Belladonna for me.

Black Lodge is probably the best song on the album if you ask me.

Anyone else looking forward to hearing the new Dream Theater album? I gave up on the band after SDOIT (last good album) but now that the main force behind their poor music and lyrics is gone (Portnoy) I am feeling quite optimistic about it, especially after hearing On The Backs of Angels and liking it quite a bit.

Not an Opeth fan (really like Damnation) - their brand of death metal doesn't really rub me the right way with the abrupt transitions (almost cut and paste-like), long instrumental passages that don't seem to bring anything to the overall song, etc. I'm really curious to hear the new album, though, I hope I end up liking it.

It does sound they're heading in that direction. With Watershed I got a little bored as I didn't think the full-time keyboardist brought much to the group. I'm hoping that the new album, sans death vocals, will bring something interesting musically. However, as I said before, I'm afraid that the band just doesn't have it in them.

Ah, Black Lodge! One of my favorites as well! I even bought the maxi-single with a couple remixes. Not sure I could tell any difference...I think it had covers of "London" by The Smiths and "Cowboy Song" by Thin Lizzy. Both show EXCELLENT musical taste.

Regarding the new Opeth album - here's yet another parody subtitling of Hitler in "Downfall".

I haven't heard a note off of it yet; I hope this is an over-reaction.

Metallica was considering trying to recruit Bush as a singer back in the 80s.

It's sad how many people voted thumbs down to that. Metal fans, as can all "true" fans, be so stupid and tight-assed.

I like John Bush for Anthrax, and am saddened that he's out and Joey is back...but he's not a fourth the singer Hetfield is. Hetfield is the greatest metal vocalist of all time.

Too bad Lars is in the same band.

Maybe best American vocalist, but Dio isn't far behind. My favorite singers are British, namely Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford.
