iPhone 4 and OS 4.X Catch All

The place for Apple fans to discuss their droolworthy upcoming Apple product and its corresponding Operating System.

1) The Gizmodo controversy. Not much more needs to be said about that (and if there is, there's a thread in P&C) -- linked because it's newsworthy.

2) The Vietnam sighting. Notable because the hardware in question seems a bit further along than Gizmodo's, and it's *actually running.*

And, the most impressive news I've seen so far -- Apple OS 4 is enabling tethering? Very impressive. Combined with Apple's version of multitasking (which I really don't have a problem with, it seems quite elegant), I'm very, very impressed with their OS updates.

When we get an official name for the phone itself I'll update the topic.

Anyway -- who's off contract with AT&T and biding their time to get this puppy in their pocket?

What about people who loathe Apple in general, but still use the iPhone because it's the best thing currently available?

My contract comes up for renewal in September, which should be perfect timing to pick up a 4th generation iPhone to replace my 3G.

I was eligible for an upgrade in January, and I'm glad I didn't. Eagerly awaiting June.

I look forward to paying out the nose again for an early upgrade... F*cking AT&T.

I really don't want to get this but I'm afraid I'll have to if AT&T can't offer me an Android that is remotely competitive.

There's several Dell Android handsets coming to AT&T in the fall that look pretty sexy, depends on how long you can wait I guess.

It appears that AT&T is raising the early termination fee on iphones to $325 on June 1st.

That's weird, up in Canada through Rogers we've had tethering for a couple months now at no extra charge. It's pretty awesome, especially using Bluetooth to link it.

Yep, the hardware and OS handles it just fine -- my wife was using the tethering on her iPhone a tonne down here in Australia when we moved house and were without our DSL for a few weeks. I think the difference here, compared to the US/AT&T, is that we pay for our data regardless (my wife's plan is 1GB/month), so I don't think the carriers are quite as worried about how you use that data.

Yeah, I find it funny/somewhat insulting that all reports of iPhone tethering act is if the US is the only country in North America. Canada has been enjoying tethering for some time now.

I've only had to use it once, but it was pretty awesome: we were on a ferry during a hockey game last month, so we connected my iPhone to my wife's MacBook and watched the live stream from cbc.ca. Even full screen over 3G it looked great with nary a hitch. We even attracted a small crowd. When I went to use the bathroom I passed by another small crowd—someone else was streaming the game on his laptop through his tethered iPhone.

What a time to be alive! /Jasper

Leads me to believe that Verizon might be getting an IPhone shortly...this is a good way for AT&T to dissuade some iPhone users from jumping carriers.

Can they do that retroactively?

Pictures of the new white iPhone have surfaced. OH MAN is it sexy.

I won't be able to afford an upgrade til next fall (2011) but it will be worth the wait

June 2011 for me. Which is fine--gives them a chance to work the kinks out and me time to save up a little.

And, who knows? Maybe they'll have cut ties with AT&T by then. As has already been pointed out, the winds do seem to be shifting in that direction.

I'm not sure why different colors for tech objects go in and out of style. I'm reminded of my dad's 1970s stereo equipment that was all brushed aluminum, which fell out of favor for glossy black items, and is now once again "retro hip."

Likewise, I was pretty bored with white smartphones toward the end of the last run, but you're right -- those new pics from apple.pro are amazingly cool looking.

The internet rumor mill is a smarmy mistress on this one. Court docs say AT&T's got a strangelhold on Apple till 2012, but there's been hints that there's a factory in Taiwan somewhere currently working on a 10 million CDMA iPhone order.

Unrelated -- I hope Apple doesn't go with the "iPhone 4G" name. I understand that it's a simple progression of nomenclature built on the 3G name, but it seems a little misleading considering that this next phone won't be compatable with any 4G networks.

My contract with TMO was up a few months ago, I am just biding my time before switching to the iPhone. I am a bit cautious though since I dont like AT&T and with the news that Verizon might be getting it makes me wonder IF they do get it and Apple wont be selling an unlocked iPhone as to which carrier to go with. Do I go with Verizon who has an almost true 4g network and should allow tethering and a bigger APP market, or with AT&T who has all those nifty wifi spots in Starbucks-which are EVERYWHERE here on the Eastside? Maybe I will get lucky and AT&T will allow tethering to keep customers? Either way I am getting rid of my G1 and moving to the iPhone.

The thing with the Verizon iPhone rumor is that Verizon's network is a completely different technology than AT&Ts, so the actual hardware of the iPhone would have to be changed to work on their network. Of course, Apple could have redesigned the new generation of iPhone with hardware for both networks, but I would be a little bit surprised. If you really prefer Verizon, maybe wait a month after the iPhone 4 is announced to see if there's any Verizon announcement, otherwise just go with AT&T.

There *is* that rumor of that Taiwanese factory filling a supposed 10 million CDMA iPhone order, with capacity to make several million more if needed.

I don't want to make any predictions concerning the availability of a CMDA (Verizon) iPhone, but -- AT&T's network's gonna suck for awhile, and the assumption is the pent-up demand for the iPhone HD will make it suck even more, at least in the short term. So you'll need to weigh that vs your commitment to Apple tech.

question -- what do you mean by Verizon's "almost true 4g?" I'm not aware of LTE being even close to ready until 2011.

I remember reading something, somewhere-specific I know-that it was supposed to be up and running by the end of 2010-I could be mistaken though. As well as they are supposed to be the first ones with a true 4g network. Its also not just my love of the iPhone-which is there- but also I am wanting a new phone and the 4g (or HD) looks amazing compared to my G1, the better screen, processor and well all the apps from the app store compared to the android market. Its worth the extra cost for everything and so far people say moving from TMO to AT&T is worth it for the iPhone, or so my coworkers and friends say. I just hope AT&T changes their tune on the tethering bit.

My wife moved from T-Mobile to AT&T specifically for the iPhone. In our area AT&T is actually really good -- minimal dropped calls and good 3G coverage in the city. She is very happy with her phone and service.

Sprints already has true 4G service in several cities -- the other three cellular companies (who were late to the game, but made a potentially smarter decision by focusing on the LTE network vs Sprint's WiMax) will have limited availability eventually.

So in other words, if you think Sprint is walking a fine line of survival here (which I do) the next 12 months of an exclusive android phone that runs on an exclusive 4G market is going to really be sink or swim time for them.

And it'll have to be enormous to even compete with Apple's tech and marketing prowess.

I wont go to Sprint...ever ever ever again. AT&T isnt as good as TMO here on the east side since in Bellevue they have about 5 or 6 buildings, not to mention 2 data centers up here but from what I have been told its still comparable service wise. Verizon doesnt have the best coverage in the citys but GREAT coverage out in the sticks which is weird.

I think Sprint will have to try really hard and hope the Android platform keeps up, I never see their commercials anymore up here so I dont think they will, I hope they wont anymore, they need to be gone already.

As far as the name, I hope they stick with iPhone 4g only because of the prior naming conventions and iPhone HD just doesnt really fit since the 3Gs has an HD screen if I am correct. iPhone HD just sounds...goofy and not quite right.

iPhone resolution is and has been 320x480. Source.

iPhone 4 officially announced a few hours ago. Not too many surprises that gizmodo didn't ruin, but the new gyroscope, the addition of iMovie to handle video editing of 720p video, and the bad ass new resolution screen are still really impressive.

The new hardware looks seriously slick.

They're talking up the video chat app pretty big, and it sounds cool, but WiFi only is kind of disappointing. I understand the reasoning though; AT&T's network would be destroyed by video chat over 3G.

Yeah. vs the Android's Qik service on the EVO, it seems a bit lackluster to be wifi only. We'll see how quickly Apple improves that product, since apparently it's still buggy on the Evo anyway.

The iPhone 4 is thinner than the 3gs with a resolution sharper than most magazine pages. And a significantly longer battery life. That is just mind blowing to me. My hat is tipped to you, Mister Jobs.

I think the problem with Qik was servers on their side, not bandwidth. There's also Skype, who has a partnership with Verizon and will be coming to all android.

AT&T is really tying their hands.

I wonder if Skype can build an iphone app, or if that will compete with Apple's new standard too much to be approved?

My thought when the Netflix announcement became official was how much that could cost someone to use with the new data plans if they weren't careful.

Well it looks like the best phone for AT&T with no android phone even coming close(on AT&T).

The big question is whether I can order it online and have it delivered to my house. With the requirement of a micro-sim, I sure hope they allow it but I'm worried I'll have to wade into the hell of an AT&T store.

The video calling on the new iPhone looks awesome, but the WiFi only restriction is a bummer. This and other things are the reason why I considered switching to Android and it's been only a few days but I like the "freedom" already.

I haven't even tested Qik video calling on my EVO yet, but I can assure you that Fring works really well over 3G. I just made a few video calls to our office in Houston, since we use Skype heavily for communication and Fring works out of the box with all my Skype contacts.

I'm still very excited over the new iPhone though. Hardware wise, it looks so good! Apple again proves that they can design awesome looking devices, with great quality in every component.

The video calling may move it into buy territory for me if it can eventually work with something like Skype. Or can call Skype platforms. There is no benefit to me having a front-facing camera when I can only call other 4G users.
