Zune HD

I started a thread in Everything Else for just this purpose (3 credits left)... it didn't last long...

Edit: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/4...

So the blogs are all atwitter, but the Zune HD is dead. Long live the Zune HD. 2.

I just bought a Zune HD 16 for $100 on eBay, but I can't imagine I won't get my money's worth out of it by the time the HD2 materializes. And it's not like this was hard to foresee. Still, it's interesting.

Also, the headline "Zune HD2 to be like iPod Touch" seems to ignore the only real correlation since the Zune HD is already very iPod Touch-like is that the iPod Touch is essentially the iPhone without the phone, and the Zune HD2 will be like a WP7 phone without the phone.

Still, it's not all bad. The idea of playing an Arcade game on your Xbox and being able to play it from the same saved status on your phone later is pretty cool. And they're going to support Flash, for better or worse. Again, not a surprising development.

How weird that Microsoft's solution will be the most open and easiest to use for people who want to just program their own phones.

Weird? Microsoft has always been rather accommodating of developers.

Developers! Developers! Developers!

A question for you Zune people: does the Zune store offer some way to purchase seasons of a show instead of just individual episodes? I'm looking to pick up some shows that are available digitally but aren't yet out on DVD, and it's awfully convenient to watch them and buy them on my Xbox, but the prices aren't just aren't comparable (for example, the latest season of Lost would be $54 in the Zune store when purchased individually but can be bought as a season from iTunes for $40).

I don't see Lost on there, but Season 1 of V (HD) is 2880 MS point vs 1920 in SD. It looks like episodes are 240 pts in HD and 160 sd. Some episodes are free. Doing the math indicates that there is no "whole season" discount.

I'm not very happy with Microsoft when it comes to the Zune. They really sh*t the bed with Zune in Canada, it's almost impossible to find accessories for it here and they never released the Marketplace or the Zune HD. I had to create a fake Windows Live account so I was able to access the Marketplace just so I could add Podcasts using the Zune Marketplace links because they don't work with a Canadian Live account.

How they've handled the marketing of the Zune is nonsense, how can they expect to compete with Apple if they can't even make the hardware available in different regions?

Just move to the US and your problems are solved

I think they're waiting to take it global with Windows Phone 7. Since WP7 is global, and every WP7 is a Zune device, the reasoning is that at that point the Zune store will be global as well.

Has there ever, in the history of selling digital media, been a "global" marketplace? I'm sort of surprised to hear this.

It's a possibility, but they're just bleeding money on the Zune. I didn't buy the 80 gig Zune to replace it later on with an 8 or 16 phone, I've already got a blackberry. They're not even planning on releasing WP7 until 4th quarter from what I've read so that's another year that people aren't using the Zune Marketplace with older devices and getting hook that make it that much easier for them to sell a WP7 to them.
