Fringe Catch-All - You Are My Favorite Thing, Fringe. My Very Favorite Thing.

It's going to be a very long summer...

More lens flare then Star Trek at the end....

Damn, they really know how to hurt the characters and the audience, don't they?

I called the twist at the end to my wife... so sad. Was massively surprised to see they had the guts to do what they did with Olivia and Peter, though. Unlike some shows that string it along forever. Was well done I thought, though of course heartwrenching given the close. Love Fringe, can't wait for next season.

I'm guessing what happened between Olivia and Peter is what outs her.

Yeah, my lukewarm feeling from last week dropped to dead cold the second Olivia kissed Peter and everything just oh so predictably fell into place. A twist is supposed to be something that completely catches you off guard, not something that you see a mile a way. The only thing that may hold my interest over to the fall is John Noble's portrayal of Walter(nate). Other than that, there ain't a whole lot holding my interest anymore. And if only Leonard Nimoy hadn't retired.

Watched the extended finale scene at fox.com/fringe. It was basically a Ford commercial. Oh well, nothing really important.

The scene where Olivia fights Olivia, all I could hear was Prof. Farnsworth in my head saying "Now, now, perfectly symmetrical violence never solved anything."

"nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"...
was my initial reaction... then i watched "Community" again and felt confidant enough to come back and post this...Olivia better not be dead..she better come back with some sweet tech and show alternate Olivia a thing or two..... on the technical side of things, i thought they did an awesome job with the fight scene and not letting me obviously see a stunt double (i hate that...thats just lazy).

I'm still excited...even if it was predictable...cause it was predictably awesome.

Spoiler:

I just realized that I said Olivia better not be dead...and that we see her at the end... its time for bed.

Yeah, kinda saw that coming. Still a great finale, and has me eager for the next season.
Random thoughts:

Spoiler:

What is Walternate planning to do with Olivia? Does he know about her Cortexafan powers? Will she be able to "power up" enough to escape back to her universe?
Alter-Olivia will be able to get alone with Peter, and just before he figures out who she is (which will take at least 3 episodes), she will knock him out and they will travel to the other side with someone.

I really want to see more of the alternate side.

Did anyone else catch the alternate comic book covers on the wall of Peter's apartment?

Remember - this is Fringe. The one thing about this show that continues to impress me is the quickness they resolve what other shows would drag out for a majority of a season. Certain show methods that have been used before in other series are probable, but unlikely...

Spoiler:

I give 3 episodes at most before alter-Olivia is discovered - Peter is way too observing to miss it, especially with their closeness. I also give about the same amount of time, if not less, to Olivia escaping. Whether this is just busting out or busting out and crossing over, I'm not sure. I truly hope they don't go with her power, necessarily, but considering the amount of fear she has to be experiencing and it's history with her cortexafan powers, it may very well cause a surge. For all we know, this could be an event that unleashes more strength - but also take into account that all the other drug children were weaker on the other side, well, except Olivia...

Spoiler:

Bell died in that universe before he and Walternate met, so I would presume that Cortexafan was never developed and the kids were never dosed. Clearly they are aware of the existence of our universe and are hostile towards us, so they could have easily sent over an army of Cortexafan-buffed super-powered soldiers if the option had been available to them, instead of the handful of shapeshifting cyborg mutants which they actually sent.

...and when regular Olivia returns from the other side, she or Peter will say that make out session was just their emotions getting the better of them again and they'll drag that part out (like they did when she found out he was an alt) for months to come.

They didn't drag that out. What universe are you watching this show in?

That was my thought. How many episodes was Charley a shape-shifter? The writers have always used these kinds of plots to drive the story forward, not wasting a bunch of time writing episodes in which the truth is almost discovered, only to be foiled.

Spoiler:

My bet is that Peter figures it out in the first episode and the Fringe team will launch another rescue attempt by episode three. The team will be back together and working on MOTW's by episode 5 at the very latest.

Spoiler:

More like Peter gets involved with alt-Olivia, regular Olivia gets tortured by Walternate to open a door back to our universe, yadda yadda yadda, alt-Olivia ends up dead at Peter's hands and can't deal with it so heartbroken regular Olivia goes back to drinking at the bowling alley. I give it...four episodes total. In other words, eventually everything will be back the way it was.

I saw them, and only can recall the red Batman symbol, and a Red Lantern cover.
@trueheart78 - Yeah, they will probably deal with these situations fairly quickly, I'm just a little pessimistic when it comes to the plots of TV shows.
@Jayhawker - I think

Spoiler:

that the other side will be launching an offensive first. This little "invasion", as Walternate has played it up to be, will mirror some of our real-world politics and be a rally to war against this universe. Now that he doesn't have Peter anymore to trigger the doomsday device, he will have to come over in force to try to get him back. Or he has something cooked up to use Olivia as a catalyst.

I guess what I like about Fringe isn't that I'm surprised by the plot twists. I've rarely been surprised by the plot of any given episode, and last night's finale was no exception. However, while the events themselves aren't surprising, I enjoy watching the characters' reactions to them. The words they choose, their facial expressions and body language, that's what's interesting. The characters in this show are all very well-grounded and human. That lack of humanity is ultimately what killed shows like 24 for me; while the plots were more difficult to predict, episode to episode, Jack Bauer and Co. had such predictable emotional responses to everything. I don't need to be surprised by a show, I just need to be engaged in the characters; with Fringe, I'm engaged.

Edit: Incidentally, there were only three episodes between when Olivia discovered that Peter was from the other side and when Peter discovered this, too. She found out in "Jacksonville" (S2, E15) and he found out in "The Man from the Other Side" (S2, E19). It might have felt like they dragged out the story for "months" because the mid-season break came after "Jacksonville."

Edit:

Jayhawker wrote:

Four. The shapeshifter took over as Charlie at the end of "A New Day in the Old Town" (S2, E1) and was discovered, and killed, at the end of "Momentum Deferred" (S2, E4). So, it took only one more episode for Peter to find out he was from the Other Side than it took for the shapeshifter Charlie to be outed.

I caught Superman on the cover of The Dark Knight Returns. I'd hang up a poster of that, and I hate Superman.

If my eyes did not deceive me, I also spotted a Justice League and a very appropriate Crisis on Infinite Earths.

And Red Lantern and Red Arrow. Apparently the writers haven't been reading Darkest Night, as there really is such a thing as a red lantern. Still cool though!

Sorry for the low resolution; I grabbed these off of Hulu.

The Red Lantern and Red Arrow are cute. I recognize the Batman cover in the third picture as being a play on another famous cover, but I don't know DC comics well enough to identify it.

Easy-to-spot-ending aside, the alternate universe was one of the most interesting I've seen on TV in quite a while.

It's the Batman version of the "Death of Superman" cover.

I liked the picture of an old JFK on Walternate's desk. Still President? No term limits on the other side?

According to io9, DC will soon be releasing all the alternate covers they did for the episode.

When Olivia first crossed over, she saw a news article indicating that Obama was president in the alternate reality, though it's possible that JFK wasn't assassinated (other events seem different prior to Peter getting abducted, such as the Lindbergh baby never getting kidnapped). I was definitely getting a Watchmen vibe from how things are in that reality.

Wait a second... no Cortexefan trials in the other universe... so how the hell did they get back with the Alternate Olivia? Olivia was the key to opening the dooryway and the only reason I didn't resuspect that the switch had happened (when Bell woke up I assumed it was the alternate version) too much before the reveal.

Now that is a very good question. Plot hole? Hmm..
