Shoot me an invite for the steam group, ukick.

Thanks. Team Venture?

I confirmed a couple pages ago but you may have missed it. If there's a spot I'll take it. If not I'll be an alternate.

Psych, if we need a sub-captain/assistant, I will volunteer my services.

Steam group created and steam group invites sent to all members of group four. If you didn't get an invite, let me know, because I have the wrong you....or something. Anyway, if possible I'd like to do most of our communication there, since everyone can see it at once. So if you haven't logged into steam in 388 days (I'm looking at you, MaverickDago) now would be a good time to do so. :-)

I asked two of my sons (ages 6 & 13) for team name suggestions. Here are a few of their ideas:

Team Shoot-em-up
Team Stompy
TF2 Hipsters
Team Blow-em-up
Anne Frank's Attic Rave (?!?)
Team Slow Burn

This HAS to be your name.

I vote for one of these.

Agreed. This is the only one better than "Team Number 2"

Wow, nice team balance mex!

Is this a mutiny? I do understand. I would not follow that man into battle.

You're just still upset because we team killed you in paintball.

I sent an invite.

The Team 2 brave new leadership of Pysch and Old Man Pi make for some good anagrams, although "Campy Dolphins" is probably a better team name than "Old Pansy Chimp".

Team 5 reprezent! So, um, when do we start? Or is it up to the captains?

Steam group created and invites sent to everyone in Team 5 (I think). If I missed you, please PM me. Thanks!

Mex: Would you mind adding the team lineups to the OP?

1st post after teams are chosen and I'm already my team's designated punching bag.

Also, our captain never has any sound... Team Deaf? Team Mute? Team Hear No Evil Say No Evil?

Team Old Pansy Chimp it is!

Anne Frank's Attic Rave is too good a name to pass up. Plus, I already made a Steam group for it.

I ask the forgiveness of all Team 1 members in advance. Let's hope my personal embarrassment is minimal.

Is there a good site for us noobs to go and learn about the game?

Also, once we know which maps we're using, is there any way for a guy to go into the maps in advance and just run around them? It's my understanding that TF2 will not start until a 2nd live player joins.

TF2 wiki

You can create your own private server if you want to just run around a map by yourself. Just go to the main TF2 screen when you start the game and one of the options should be "create a server".

You can try your hand with bots too.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. And thanks for the wiki link.

Whoa, cool. I didn't know TF2 had bots. I could swear last summer I tried this and the only way to play was on a live server with 2 or more people.

edit: Ok, I'm having some weird problems. I was able to create a private server, load the map and enter the map. At first it put me in closed room, and said 'waiting for players', with a countdown. Once the countdown completed, I could run around the map, but there were no collision physics. I could run through walls, and even clip into the ground. So I'm not sure if that's just because no else joined, or if I'm having a problem with the game itself.

Try typing noclip= 0 in the console

You were probably in spectator mode. I'd help you more but well... I am on team four.

FedoraMcQuaid wrote:

I was wrong, I am not clipping through everything, just any elevation changes. stairs don't work at all, I'll clip through them, and let's say I'm on an upper floor, and use the down stairs, I'll just stay on the exact same elevation, as if the floor is invisible. if I press the spacebar, I'll 'port' to the floor below. if the ground elevation changes, say a hill, I'll clip into the hill.

This has probably got to do with spectator mode or something, as Norfair said.

Not sure how to open the console. I tried ~ but it didn't work.

edit: disregard, all is well. I jumped on a public server and everything was fine. Even got a couple of kills!

Yep, definitely were in spectator mode.

Yeah exploring a map by yourself isn't as useful as you might think. You won't really get to know the maps until you've played through them a bunch with real people. You'll see where engineers like to set up sentries, where scouts can double jump to, where soldiers and demos can rocket or sticky-jump to, where spies like to hide, etc.

Anyway, for those of you who have never played or have only played a little bit, please, please spend some time before the tournament gets going to get your feet wet with the game.

Also, team 1, check your Steam invites. Everyone except SocialChameleon (send me your SteamID) should have an invite to our group.

What do you mean by getting your feet wet? I mean, I agree, and I'm looking over the TF2 Wiki, and I'll probably run around in some public servers (yay, what fun), but there's no way us noobs can become very acquainted with 8 or 9 classes, and a huge number of maps, and game modes, before it starts.

The only reason I signed up for this was because of the open invite for new players, so I was hoping it wouldn't be uber-competitive and have poor play looked down upon. I just want to have some fun with fellow goodjers
