Fringe Catch-All - You Are My Favorite Thing, Fringe. My Very Favorite Thing.

I liked the picture frame with Mark Valley's photo in it when they were introducing Olivia the P.I.

I can't help but wonder how much of the story was crap that Walter was making up and how much was based on what he knows of the Other World. We know that there's an Olivia, Broyle, Walter, Astrid and Bell on the other side, but we don't know a whole lot about them. Maybe Other Olivia really is a P.I.? Shouldn't there be 2 William Bells on the other side? How did Other Walter go from his son mysteriously being kidnapped by "himself" to presumably being "The Secretary" and what's he trying to accomplish? Rescue, revenge?

It's just fantastic that they have so much more story to mine! Can't wait!

I think most of the story was Walter's way of coming to terms with a lot of the things he's done, especially regarding Peter:

Spoiler:

-He did everything with the best intentions, but ended up causing more harm than good.
-He stole children's dreams and replaced them with nightmares (Cortexiphan trials, the abduction of Peter)
-Peter is not related to him, and he stole Peter's heart only to have Peter steal it back from him later

A lot of other parts seem to be little nods to other events in the series:

Spoiler:

-Peter is apparently in love with Rachel, but "things are not as they seem" and he ends up falling for Olivia. In fact, all the interaction between Olivia and Peter in this episode is basically a condensed version of the way their relationship has developed over the course of the series.
-Astrid applies for a job at a mental institution, which could be a reference to Walter's time in the institution as well as the fact that she ended up looking after him.
-The weird screw thing that punctures the wall is reminiscent of the device that appeared out of the ground when the Watchers were first introduced in season 1.

Also, I have to agree that Broyles' depiction in the story definitely seems like a reference to The Wire - not only is he a police lieutenant, but he abused his authority when he was a beat cop (in this case, planting evidence), and Olivia uses it to gain leverage against him.

Holy sh*t, this episode started with classic Yes! It's like prog rock heaven on Fringe lately.

Well, if you're going to smoke up the Brown Betty, there's nothing better to listen to.

Yeah, his Brown Betty recipe is something I think I'd like even more than the pecan pie or taffy recipe.

Pink Floyd probably ekes out Yes by a hair.

Yeah they had cell phones (and computers, LCDs, lasers, the internet...), but they were boxy retro-looking things with rotary phone ringtones. It's not a period drama, they were just trying to capture the aesthetic of an old detective movie. Besides, you're complaining about anachronisms in a story made up on the spot by an insane and incredibly stoned old man.

i was fine with the cell phones and all the random misplaced tech... except for the rotary style phone on Nina's desk that she pressed a few buttons on rather than actually having to turn anything... that bothered me. thats just poor acting.

but other than that 2 second slip... sweetness. it wasn't as musical as i thought it would be, but they made it WAY less cheesy and that takes skill.

Um, those things actually exist:

Personally, I think those types of phones are kind of awesome!

cheating. (but yeah... i love old phones...used a rotary style at my house growing up till i was about 11, and miss it sometimes...a friend of mine even has the old style with the separate ear piece and mouth piece...i occasionally can't find a signal on my cell phone when i'm over there...;) )

I remember that my grandfather's old phone was so heavy that you could've easily beat someone to death with it.

Don't let Russell Crowe hear that.... OH SNAP.... lol

[thread derail]When we were in high school all our classrooms had old school phones on the wall next to the door. They existed only for teachers to call the school's resource officer or for dialing 911. One time two girls got into a fight just inside the doorway to one of the math classes I never paid attention in. One girl slapped the other. Girl that got slapped reached up, tore the phone off the flimsy little wallmount and hit the other girl across the face with it.

It was awesome.[/derail]

Heavy old phones have been potential weapons to me ever since.

It'd be more awesome if they started tearing each other's clothes off.

Even so, a chick-fight is always awesome.

Happy Fringe Day!

A few things:

1.) I had no idea Anna Torv was Australian.

2.) Joshua Jackson making John Noble restart his "batteries are flat" line over and over was fantastic.

One more time?

so now i'm craving some deliciouse strawberry flavored death...

that and also this

Spoiler:

SECRETARY WALTERNATE!

the preview for next week looks like its going to be awesome.

Fringe,

You are wonderful. Don't ever change.

And the entire thread says "Called it" at once.

The NW setting gave proceedings a vintage X-Files flavor, which made it all the more awesome.

I was getting a serious Twin Peaks vibe, personally. I think some of the music even seemed Twins Peakish.

As far as Walternate, I just love the way Fringe handles plotlines like this. Lost and Heroes would have stretched this out until next season. But when the Fringe writers get on a path, they get to the end pretty darn quick, and get going on another path before you can catch your breath. They really have figured out how to pace a show like this.

And about that music...

Tonight's episode "Northwest Passage" was scored by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.

Languishing in my queue, I'm afraid.

I was getting the vibe of those old X-Files episodes when Scully had been abducted and Mulder was left to fend for himself in places that Vancouver was standing in for. Oh, and the big twist at the end was telegraphed a mile in advance thanks to the clips in the teaser.

As a teacher, when a girl fight happens, I do nothing. Not because its awesome, but because they will kill you. Boys, on the other hand, are 99% of the time fighting for show. Since we're 70% hispanic, most hispanic boys don't want to hurt or damage their faces. So they bow up, get all puffy chest, talk more than they would if they were asked their life story by someone who really cares and then hopes someone will step in-between. Girls, they'll kill you.

...and its over the most {ableist slur} sh*t. For example, there was one where one girl was fighting another because of something that might have been said about her 3 years ago... in middle school. Christ.

You guys need spoiler alerts!

Spoiler:

The Peter in Washington episode had me eventually guessing that everytime a character stepped out of the frame they were going to be killed or shape-shifted, and then it turns out they catch a murdered who could not have done these surgeries.

And how come these surgeries killed the people? The flawed people before were back to normal - did it kill the ones with positive powers (the girl that could read auras) or are they just not wanting to leave any evidence? Either way it attracts attention and possibly Olivia and the feds. It's not big enough to worry about, but it does make me wonder.

In the end, though, I love the fact that Fringe is bringing together the characters from the other side as well as from this side - they could have introduced another character, or brought over Charlie from the other side (or someone else that was dead), stuff other shows would have done. Instead they bring across, quite likely, the character that makes the most sense and is a delight to watch while mad - now we get to see what the loss of a son has done to Walternate.

I think John Noble is such a perfect cast for Walter and his acting when Walter had full brain gave us a peak at just how mad Walternate could be.

Next week, just... Wow. The fact that they travel to the other side looks great - I can't wait to me The Alternates (tm)!

Are spoilers really that necessary in a catch-all thread. Last week it took me until Sunday to finally watch the current Fringe. So I just avoided this thread until I watched it. I can see using more spoilers in the TV thread, as you may visit there not expecting info on a particular show. But everyone that opens this thread has to be expecting talk about the current episode.

Now, if I had info that implied what was going to happen on upcoming episodes, I would feel compelled to use a spoiler tag.

Spoiler:

I can't believe Olivia is a V!

I just now saw this, but is the old love interest of Olivia (from the initial episodes) the guy from Human Target?
