Gears of War 3 - Catch All

I guess it depends if there's other modes that are included or how big the game will ultimately be.

While I don't have any reason to believe that it would or wouldn't be on two disks, I can't see that it would be a huge deal if it was. As long as the multiplayer is all on one disk, that effectively means one disk swap per play through. It is a pretty linear game, after all.

Ok, wait. I mean it wouldn't be a huge deal IF that stuff were true. But there is no reason to believe it won't be. I mean, that they got network play totally polished, right?

More news.

Gears 3 is going to take place in an oceanic setting, and since 60% of the people who played Gears 2 never finished the campaign, it is gonna be even easier apparently. Huh. I didn't think Gears 2 was especially hard. Anyone else? Defending the gondola against those reavers was the only really sticky bit, and even then only on the hardest difficulty level.

Also Epic has essentially promised that they will keep raping the Gears franchise until gold coins stop popping out of its mouth.

I would think 60% is pretty high. I remember Valve releasing some stats that only 25% of people that bought HL2 episode 1 finished it. I don't think lowering the difficulty will make more people finish the campaign. Its probably more of an attention span thing (i.e. whats new and shiny).

I guess as long as the keep the tough difficulty levels the same I won't care what they do with normal and below.

On normal, I didn't think it was that hard. I beat it on Insanity as well, and while that was a bit challenging, outside of a few roadblock annoying set piece fights, that wasn't that bad, either.

I suspect a lot of people just don't finish games.

I'm really horrible at shooters with a controller, and even I managed to finish the campaign and have a ton of fun doing it. (Although the gondola defense part had me wanting to throw my controller at times.) I think the completion numbers probably represent a lot of people buying the game just for the multi-player.

I'm disappointed if they're shortening or dumbing down the single player experience. I buy Gears for the single player campaign, and have never played a multi-player game.

There's an article on gamepro by john davison covering game length/difficulty (also covered on slashdot). I think it's a topic for another thread though.

Co-op was a lot of fun, too. I think I've played through the game 2x with different partners. And while I wasn't into the competitive multiplayer, I've played countless hours of Horde.

I really, really need to get into Gears multiplayer with Gears and Beers this friday.

It's all about getting to the boomshot first and/or making sure Gumbie doesn't get torque.

For me, it would be all about actually playing some multiplayer first. I have never played any Gears multiplayer.

Have you tried Horde at least? Horde is great.

None. Ever.

The thing about Gears and Beers is that if you show up without the DLC maps, someone will inevitably be drunk and start to yell about it.

But if one doesn't ever play multiplayer, how do they justify that kind of pricey purchase?

Ahhh, decisions.

There is often a secondary game on Friday nights that starts up when the main room is full. This might be a better bet for a low-key introduction to multiplayer/Horde.

Yeah, but for new players we make due - it's fun with more people.

I'm a huge fan of horde, and I'd gladly play instead of vs mode. Sent me a friend request or whatnot.

If I were to buy one of the multiplayer map packs, which one is the best for someone who has never really played any Gears multiplayer?

I'd tell you to save your money and see if you enjoy multiplayer at all. To get the map packs, 1600 pts will get the All Fronts pack, which has all of them. Buying them piecemeal is definitely more expensive, but quite likely if you get one set and like them, you should get all (for mp purposes)

Ahh, didn't know that. I looked on the XBox.com page and just saw a bunch of packs.

I will probably like Gears multiplayer if I play with the goodjer crew as you guys have a fairly high percentage chance of *not* being douchebgs, unlike the people in the Halo:Reach beta, one of whom Female Doggoed me out because I couldn't do a headshot across a map while flying, which is apparently a fairly basic skill that everyone but me possesses.

If you want absolutely everything, the All Fronts pack will get you all of the multiplayer maps, as well as the cut single player level.

It's 1600 spacepoints, which is $20, but that's still cheaper than buying all of the other packs in total. In all honesty, if you're just getting into the multiplayer, I wouldn't recommend buying any of the map packs at first. The starter maps are pretty decent, IIRC.

I've been playing with the crew since Dec 09, so about 6 months, and I'm still too often the first dead on the versus maps. There are some really good players that join that can be jerks, but it's generally not too bad. Generally a decent amount of fun, too

It would be nice if we could get some alt game types going on Friday nights like, say Annex. But Warzone is almost always the game of choice.

I've had some amusing times when things were just getting started or winding up and there were only a few folks on, and we played something like a 2 on 2 game of Submission.

If you went to venture out into publand multiplayer, I recommend playing King of the Hill or Annex. Firstly because most of the ultra-l33t players stick to Execution or Warzone, and secondly because you can die and respawn as many times as you want without feeling too much like a useless git. Also, just by chasing down capture points you can contribute to your team score even if you barely kill anyone.

If you want to learn the maps and where all the weapons are, you can put bot players into a local match and just truck around for 10 minutes or so until you get a handle on the layout and what good stuff is hidden where.

I think we should get back to Gears 3 related posts, but before that, let me just say that playing the multiplayer tutorials in the game with the bots will give you a leg up on competition because they actually explain what the game modes are about. Most people just jump into public games and have no idea how the other modes even work.

All I have to say is that Mechs in Gears is gonna rock. I'm probably going to fall victim to a combination of hype and netcode when this launches, but in the meanwhile, I'm waiting for preorders on the LE to open up.

Looks like the Game Informer - Gears of War 3 hub site has gone live, with date intervals through June 3rd listed with blotted out news.

I love how Anya is the only one who sees the locust guys who are, like, ten feet away.

"Guys, they're coming! Point your guns that way!"

"Shhhh Anya, we're trying to pose as a team."

None of them can even look in the same direction, though. Some teamwork ...

Baird's Hammerburst (??) has a bayonet on it. I like the look of Dom's double-barreled shotgun.

Edit: It's a Pendulum Wars Lancer not a Hammerburst.

CVG is reporting that Gears 3 will have dedicated servers.
